Shabbat Shalom October 25, 2013

Dear Friends and Family,

Health Equality
It is absolutely unacceptable and a Shanda that the website for HealthCare.gov was such a technical disaster as it seems they knew of the problems before it went “LIVE”.  (yes, I just criticized the Dems.) Hopefully, the best and the brightest will NOW fix the kinks and those who need insurance will be able to obtain it before the official deadline.  There were 48 million Americans without Insurance before ObamaCare which is the true Shanda of our nation.

Taft Anger
Republican president William Howard Taft held our highest office in 1909 and since then many of his decedents have held prominent political office; all within the Republican Party.  Today, though, the Taft legacy is fed up with the highjacked extreme measures of many who are tarnishing the Grand Old Party. William’s Nephew John G. Taft makes this message abundantly clear in this week’s NY Time’s Op-Ed:
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/23/opinion/the-cry-of-the-true-republican.html?_r=0

Marriage Equality
Only 36 to go… New Jersey became the 14th State to institute Marriage Equality behind CaliforniaConnecticutDelawareIowaMaineMarylandMassachusettsMinnesotaNew HampshireNew YorkRhode IslandVermont, and Washington.  There is a Michigan ban on Same-Sex Marriage however there is hope on our horizon as a Federal judge announced this week that a February Trial will be held to determine if our ban is constitutional.

Desensitized
Another school shooting occurred this week (in Sparks, Nevada) when a 12 year old killed a (former Marine) teacher.  He also wounded two other 12 year olds and killed himself with a semiautomatic gun he took from his house.  We seem to be desensitize to gun violence since this horrific incident barely made the media print headlines.

Graham Nash

Music Legend
Wild Tales is the new book out this week by Graham Nash.  It is a memoir which shares the rock and roll stories of his life in the Hollies and as the stabilizing force of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.  Graham (my favorite of the four) is a two time Hall of Famer, with each of his bands.  This new book includes behind the scenes explanations of many of his famous tunes.  Here’s an oldie from my favorite Nash album (Songs for Beginners):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWrtQOgOlHY

Music Beauty
If you enjoy music, you should enjoy this incredible expression of trash to treasure as this symphony performs music from instruments created from garbage near the slums of a landfill.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJrSUHK9Luw

Landscape Beauty
Detroit thanks are due to Dan Gilbert and his team for eliminating the Blight in our city (there are 78,000 abandoned building) and Hantz Farm for reforesting huge acres of our blighted land.

Wishing you and your loved ones a Sweet and Peaceful Shabbat Shalom,

Lisa

Shabbat Shalom October 18, 2013
Dear Friends and Family,

Lessons Learned
After 16 days and a $24 Billion price-tag, our country is up and running again.  What was accomplished?  Were lessons learned?

I hope so, since we’ll be at this same debt debate again in Mid-January. By the way, here are some Legislators who voted against the bill to re-open the Government: Senators Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio and Rand Paul (all potential 2016 Pres. Candidates), US Reps. Justin Amash (Grand Rapids), Kerry Bentivolio (Troy, Bloom. Hills, Birm…), Tim Walberg (Central/Lower Michigan), Candice Miller (Thumb area of Michigan) and Michele Bachmann. *

Lessons Articulated
Last week’s message included a greeting from JFK’s nephew. This week begins with JFK’s own words of respecting our common goal to safeguard our Nation and all its citizens. Like all Unions (from our United States to our united families), communication, negotiation, respect and compromise must prevail for a healthy and prosperous future.  Before Congressional Leaders take their Oath of Office, they should be require to attend Marriage Counseling to teach fair fighting before they start ruining, I mean running our Country. It is our jobs, next Nov. 4th (2014) to prevent the continuation of this severe Congressional infighting. Our Senate functions healthier since Whole States must be represented but some Congressional districts are shaped for monotone beliefs producing extreme views. The True Parties of our past were respectful opponents unlike a segment of today’s Red Elephants that would expel the likes of Reagan and Bush. Please get involved in your Congressional Races. We need sane voices on both sides of the aisle.

Musical Lessons
The insane message of Boycotting Israel has a brilliant, educational, musical and catching video (by Ari Lesser) to combat this hateful campaign.  This youtube succinctly magnifies where blame and boycott COULD be directed and points out the sad realities of the rest of the world (even the United States isn’t perfect). I first saw this video last Sunday and found it so compelling that I wanted to share it with you immediately, but I didn’t want to inundate your inboxes. Once a week from me is enough.  I hope this youtube spreads like wildfire so when you google Boycott Israel, this site pops up above the others:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8bR4EU2eUg

Lessons Unknown
The above video is directed at those who either Hate or Love Israel, but what about the majority of people in this country who know nothing about Israel or even where it is on a map.  There is a new non-profit organization called reThink Israel that was created to bring Israel to the conscience minds of those who have no knowledge of the Land of Milk and Honey.  Please check out their new website http://rethinkisrael.org/ and if you choose, please like them on Facebook
https://www.facebook.com/ReThinkIsrael

And, proudly, I must mention our son-in-law, Tzvi Raviv, works for this new initiative.

Missing Lessons
Did you know ONLY 5 (CA, FL, IL, NJ & NY) of our 50 States requires Holocaust education in their school’s curriculum. This is creating a generation of students who unwittingly are completely ignorant of the worst genocide of world history.  If we don’t teach our past, what will keep us from repeating it.  This (14 minute) video is an Eye-opener.  A teacher (and daughter of a Holocaust survivor) surveyed several students on a major University campus and sadly discovered the results of a lack of education.  Even if you can only watch a few minutes, its worth it to understand this failure in our educational system:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4V4bmm6yJMw

Indirect Lessons
I have one last Jewish Homeland Touting.  Israel, indirectly, is responsible for saving our planet. OK, that might be a stretch, BUT, 40 years ago (this week Oct. 17th), several Arab Nations attacked Israel on Yom Kippur.  The United States sent help which angered the Arab Nations, which caused the First Israel Boycott, which resulted in the Oil Embargo, which created higher gas prices for our cars, which forced us to evaluate fuel efficiency which instigated alternative energy initiatives…which is now saving our planet.

Wishing you and your loved ones a Sweet and Peaceful Shabbat Shalom,

Lisa

Dear Friends and Family,

The Nine
SCOTUS started another session this week with its traditional start date (and 1981 movie title) of The First Monday In October. How do you think the Supreme Court should vote on some of these tough topics on their current docket:  Do you think the store Hobby Lobby (yes, same one that doesn’t sell Jewish decorations) should be allowed to deny Contraceptive Care to its employees based on their Christian beliefs?  Do you think the race of African American students should be considered for University (of Michigan) acceptance?  Do you think abortion protestors should be able to come closer than 35 feet from clinic patients?

3 women
6 men
1 African American
1 (first) Latina
3 Jews
6 Roman Catholics

Level the Field
But the case that is most concerning involves political campaign contributions and efforts to eliminate the individual limit. Over 6 Billion dollars was spent in 2012 on political campaign races. Most of that money was raised from the top 1% of our population and corporations, but some of it came from many of your pockets. Aside from Super Pacs and Citizens United which gave corporations (as individuals) nearly free rein in contribution opportunities, there is still a limit of $2,600 by one person to one candidate per one cycle. Removal of this limit is now in front of SCOTUS. We need a complete overhaul of this system.  Buying influence, slinging mud via billions of dollars of Media Ads is NOT the way to elect our legislators.  There should be a level playing field with Town Halls, Debates and Door Knocking, but it doesn’t look like this situation will improve anytime soon and if the SC rules in it’s conservative manner, this last limit will also be removed.  Speaking of money…

Say Hello to our New 100 Dollar Bill.

Ben Franklin
They have been working on this new bill since 2003 and each one costs 12.5 cents to print.  There are many new features to prevent counterfeiters. The 100 dollar bill is our largest denomination since we stopped producing 500, 1,000 and 10,000 dollar bills back in 1969.  Did anyone really use a 10,000 bill?  100 dollar bills last around 15 years in circulation compared to 6 years for the 1 dollar bill.

First Female
Now for more money talk, the economic Glass Ceiling was shattered this week with the nomination of Janet Yellen as our (first female) Federal Reserve Chair.  Ms. Yellen (proudly from our national Jewish Community) is brilliant and will serve our country well. Back in 2007, she astutely predicted/warned about the 08 Recession and hopefully she can help keep our economy strong during her rein.

Brave Soul
Another outstanding female role model is 16-year-old Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani student who was shot by the (evil-minded) Taliban just because she was defending educational accessibility for girls in her community and county.  She is well deserving of this year’s Nobel Peace Prize and hopefully will win it. (The winner will be announced Friday, after I send this message). Here is Jon Steward’s interview with Malala. He was so genuinely enamored by her, he could barely contain his emotions.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f506lCk6Tos

Positive PR
Our global Jewish population is 0.2% yet Jews represent 22% of all Nobel Laureates including several more this year and many with Israeli roots.  Our global and national contributions should be celebrated yet Anti-Semitism continue to persist.  We could truly benefit from a Global PR campaign to educate the masses of our positive impact on the world.

VIP
This week’s Guest Shabbat Shalom Greeter is from a very prominent national family who’s contributions have made a tremendous impact on our society. I met him at this week’s event sponsored by the Alzheimer Association and Jewish Senior Life. He was gracious, friendly and very handsome.  The handsome part is a clue to his family. Enjoy and thanks, Nancy Heinrich and Carol Rosenberg for your efforts with his appearance: http://youtu.be/l8EtuC9EN9g

Punishment
Kwame Kilpatrick will serve 28 years in Federal Prison for the millions of dollars of damage and corruption he inflicted on our City of Detroit. May his punishment put an end to this despicable era as our city moves forward in a positive direction.

RIP
An estimated 700,000 people attended the (largest) funeral in Israel’s history for ultra-orthodox Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, the revered and controversial leader of the Sephardic community.

Wishing you and your loved ones a Sweet and Peaceful Shabbat Shalom,

Lisa

The Situation Soap Box
The Situation in our country is toxic. This Shutdown has far-reaching effects for all of us.  Some also forget that we just cut cost with the Sequestration and now our Debt Ceiling is looming. Our recovering economy could be affected. There are still over 1/2 million people NOT working or receiving wages to pay their bills. Will they get paid retroactively… who knows? When will they return to work…who knows?  Here are some facts we do know…The Affordable Care Act (ObamaCare) is LAW and was affirmed by the Supreme Court and should NOT be a pawn for negotiations.  Our Health Care system was broken and cost were soaring out of control for Individuals, Businesses, Our Government and Hospitals.  Every Western Nation has some form of Health Care. Reform was needed and attempted UNSUCCESSFULLY in the 90s. It took 20 years for it to be attempted again but this time with major compromise just to get it passed. ACA IS COMPLICATED. It is not being clearly explained. 85% of our population has insurance and does NOT need to do anything different. 26 million people (who didn’t have med. ins.) are now eligible to get it.  On the first day alone 5 Million people attempted to navigate the new online marketplace. Debating the details of what might happen because of this LAW is futile.  Things WILL change, NOTHING can ever stay the same, but it won’t be catastrophic like some pundits predict.  In fact, most believe it will be beneficial to us as a modern society but the future history books will tell the tale not the Talking Heads (from news networks, not the 70s band).

Happy 123rd Birthday

Yosemite National Park had a birthday this week BUT there were NO guests to celebrate since the park, along with many other national parks, museums and offices, were closed due to the Government Shutdown.

800,000 government employees received unpaid “vacations”. The Park closures are sad but if this shutdown persist, FOOD (through the WIC* program), MEDICAL CARE (through clinical research at NIH**) and EDUCATION (through the Head Start program) will be halted. That could be devastating for millions of people.

Congress’ Ping Pong match is giving the American Public an ulcer, but as of Tuesday, 24 Million more adults can get their ulcers treated with Medical Insurance though the Affordable Care Act also know as ObamaCare that:
– can NOT deny coverage based on pre-exiting condition (like Cancer)
– requires 80% of Ins. premiums MUST (now) be spent on Medical Care
– gives tax credits to small businesses to offset Ins. cost
– eliminates lifetime medical fee caps for families

Why would ANYONE want to shut down the Government just to prevent these benefits which will help lower our country’s Health Care Costs and give medical hope to those who can’t afford it. Boggles the mind! Check out this “humorous” video of ObamaCare opinions:

Topic 3

In Olympia, Greece this week, the Torch began its relay to the Winter Games in Sochi, Russia (where LGBT History Month is NOT celebrated). This all sounds so nostalgic and momentous but when did this tradition begin?  Was it in ancient Greece?  Well, no. It was in 1936 Nazi Germany and conceived by Hitlers propaganda machine.  Greece is where the Aryan Race supposedly began which tied into Hitler’s agenda of staring the torch relay there.  Today, this tradition is “white” washed to remove any reference of it’s origins, but you can read more about it at this site:

Shabbat Shalom September 27, 2013

Dear Friends and Family,

Human Dignity
I whole-heartedly agree with this quote by Brian Dickerson of the Detroit Free Press. “Health Care should be recognized as a fundamental Human Right”.  With Oct. 1st looming, some legislators are still battling to sabotage both affordable access to Health Care AND our national fiscal budget.  It is disgraceful to waste precious legislators’ time on 42 attempts to defund Obamacare. The Supreme Court declared it legal yet millions of $$s are still being squandered on scare tactic ads* encouraging healthy young adults to boycott the system. For the system to work, all Americans are required (and deserve) to Opt In. This will keep insurance rates affordable for ALL. Why “tilt at (righteous) windmills” when cooperation (as voters intended) is needed to help improve the (thankfully) inevitable new Health Care System. I think what’s feared most from detractors is that it will be successful.  This Karma video (from last week) is indicative of the problem that could occur to anyone without medical insurance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7s22HX18wDY

Where is the Dignity?
Where is the Loud Public Outcry from the moderate Muslim community whenever their religion is highjacked in the name of terror.  72 deaths and nearly 200 injuries occurred at the Westgate Mall in Kenya and all for WHAT?  How do you combat terror when death and martyrdom is their goal.  The Israelis are all too familiar with this scenario which is why they were nearly first on the scene to help negotiate and rescue victims.

Attempted Dignity
The United Nations General Assembly occurred this week in NYC with slight optimism for Peace as Abbas (Palestinian leader), Rouhani (Iranian leader), Obama and Bibi all spoke of HOPE, though the Israelis walked out before Rouhani’s speech. This action might have been pre-mature.  Action, though, is the key word, as words can be meaningless unless they are followed by meaningful action.  Only time will tell.  By the way, did Rouhani condemn Nazi atrocities? The man seems to be hiking a tightrope.

Papal Dignity
I love Pope Frances and his compassionate philosophy.  It will be interesting to watch the meaningful actions of the Catholic Church.

Talented and Dignified
I also love Sir Paul and his new song/video.  Tell me what you think: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/videos/paul-mccartney-takes-a-bow-in-new-lyric-clip-20130917  I heard he delighted 10,000 fans this week while performing 15 songs during (and after) the Jimmy Kimmel show.  I’m only a little obsessed with Sir Paul but I’ll try to control my passion.

Dignified Employment
Please check out this interesting video on how we can affect American jobs.  Seems so simple and achievable.
http://www.millionjobsproject.us/

Dignified Action
Just because we CAN doesn’t mean we Should. This holds true for many actions in our lives but none more meaningful than how we use our cell phones.  “Stop and smell the roses” rather than photographing them.  This video illustrates it best and if it looks familiar to you, maybe you need a behavioral adjustment:

Dear Friends and Family,

Deja Vu
Non-Regulated Gun Accessibility PLUS Under-Researched and Stigmatize Mental Illness EQUALS a continued death plague on our US Society as ANOTHER Mass Murder reared its ugly head this week.  12 innocent souls were lost as the sorrow ripples through their families and the anger bubbles up again in our Country.  Its shocking how selfish, stubborn and uncompromising some Gun Lovers are.  The NRA has a $231 Million yearly budget.  The least they can do is commit just 5% (that would be $11.5 Million) to Mental Health research since (I would assume) 100% of the Mass Murder Shooters have Mental Illness.  But what is REALLY needed is a ban on Assault Weapons and thorough Background Checks.  Blah, Blah, Blah… Deja Vu.

Biblical Proportions
Noah’s Ark was needed last week in parts of Colorado where 1,600 homes were destroyed, 3,000 people were evacuated, 8 lives were lost and 100s are still missing.  It will take Millions of Hours and Dollars to Repair this Disaster.

Global Outcry
The UN has confirmed this week (the old news) that “someone” in Syria violated the “punishable?” war crime of using chemical weapons which caused the death of over a thousand lives.  Who will inflict the punishment upon the perpetrators of this evil crime? Who is protesting against these barbarians?  The UN? The European Union? The US? The constant Anti-Israel picketers? Will the time come in the near future that evil acts against humanity will be abhorrent to the Global Community or will we continue to stand idle and blind-eyed to human suffering.

Here I Am
Hineni… Our president was on target with this uplifting speech about our accomplishments and contributions as Jewish American Citizens.  It is our responsibility to step forward and voice our beliefs and hopes to Tikkun (repair) America.  His words are accompanied by a (2.5 minute) slide show of our Jewish American History: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FoRe2JDkPqU

Karma
This 3 minute video has experienced world-wide circulation (over 9 million views) since posted just 10 days ago. Its message is poiyant, meaningful and hopeful.  Please enjoy:

Our American History
50 years ago (Sept. 15, 1963) and just 2 months shy of Pres. Kennedy’s assassination, Addie Mae Collins, Denise McNair, Carole Robertson, and Cynthia Wesley (all age 14) lost their lives in the Birmingham, AL 16th Street Baptist Church bombing by a racist sociopath.  May their innocent loss of life and their memories bring us closer to a society free of prejudice and hatred.

Our Jewish History
40 years ago (Oct. 6, 1973) 2,800 Israelis lost their lives during the Yom Kippur War.  This surprise attack on our holiest day of the year by Egypt and Syria was in vein as the Sinai Dessert and the Golan Heights were NOT recaptured as Egypt and Syria had intended.  Though it did set the stage for the Land for Peace swap between Sadat and Begin.

Are you Happy?
Israel jumped 3 spots this year on the UN’s World Happiness Report to (drumroll…) NUMBER 11.  Of the 156 countries, Denmark was number 1, followed by Norway, Switzerland, Netherlands and Sweden.  The survey assessed GDP per capita, healthy life expectancy, having someone to count on, perceived freedom to make life choices, freedom from corruption, and generosity.  Here are some other Countries you might find interesting:
# 6 Canada
# 16 Mexico
# 17 US
# 22 UK
# 43 Japan

 Shabbat Shalom September 13, 2013

Dear Friends and Family,

Fast Days
Our two holiest days of the year are Shabbat and Yom Kippur and this year they combine forces.  Did you know it is forbidden to Fast on Shabbat so if any of the other 6 Fast Days (yes, there 7 Fast Days during our year) fall on Shabbat they are conveniently moved to Sunday. But NOT Yom Kippur since both days are of equally significance.  This is the only time we are permitted/required (if able) to Fast on Shabbat.  May you have an Easy and Meaningful Fast and may your name be written and sealed in the Book of Life for another year.

Threads that Bind
Though we as Jews have “only” been around for about 3.5 thousand years we are celebrating the New Year of 5774.  So why the discrepancy?  My very un-rabbinic interpretation is that the world was biblically “born” 5, 774 years ago and it is our job to take care of the WHOLE world (Tikkun Olam) and not just when we came on the scene. Tikkun Olam is our Jewish responsibility that must be continuously taught to future generations.  It proudly binds us as a people with the valued thread of Healing and Repairing our surroundings.

First Hero
Tragically 2,977 lives perished 12 years ago, this week.  They included men, women, children, Jews, Christians, Muslims, Firefighters, Doctors, Lawyers, Teachers, Americans, Israelis and citizens from 113 other nations.  One of those Israelis was Danny Lewin, the first victim of 9/11. Danny was a 31 year old husband, father, Tech genius, businessman and IDF solder who also happened to serve in an elite Israeli counterterrorism unit.  So, during those first moments of inflight chaos, his instincts kicked in and he lost his life trying to defeat the five box-cutter wielding terrorists.

Danny Lewin – Hero

Terrorism is a Cancer in our world that MUST be extinguished.  Let’s hope this New Year of 5774 brings an end to Man’s inhumanity to Man and Peace on Earth can spread it’s protective wings around us all.

Missing Flag
There is a story about this famously photographed flag from 9/11. It was snatched off a docked boat near Ground Zero and hoisted up moments after the catastrophe. Then “The Flag” fluttered in the wind at NY’s City Hall, Yankee Stadium and on the USS Theodore Roosevelt. However somewhere between the original flag raising at Ground Zero and its first destination, it was replaced by a larger different flag and to this day the whereabouts of the original flag are unknown.  There is a website dedicated to solving this mystery: http://www.findthe911flag.com/

19 year old (soul)
Here is an excellent Ted Talk by, Kevin Breel, a brave and incredible young man who opening discusses his depression.  It is moving and powerful and worth the 11 minutes it take to watch.  His words of wisdom on excepting ourselves is a message that needs to be shouted from the rooftops.

Shana Tova 5774 and Shabbat Shalom September 6, 2013
Dear Friends and Family,

Sweet and Healthy Shana Tova to all.  We have just celebrated the start of our New Year of 5774 and now we are in the Days of Awe between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. On Yom Kippur we ask forgiveness from God for the sins between Him and Us, but what about all those sins between Us and our fellow human beings.  These Days of Awe are a time to ask forgiveness from each other.  It is a sacred time to work hard at NOT adding more sins to our list for the year and reach out to friends and family to apologize for misbehavior of words or actions. So… I am truly sorry if I hurt any of you this past year and will try hard to shrink my sin list for next year.  Rosh Hashana is when our names get written in the Book of Life for another Year and on Yom Kippur, our names are sealed in the book.  We say, “Gmar Chatima Tova = May you be inscribed in the Book of Life for good”.

May this be the Year when the Lion and Lamb live in Peace.

Our community is still reeling from the devastating loss of our beloved George Orley. His passing has inspired many to appreciate life, friends and health. Doing our Best, Being a Good Person and Healing the World is a fitting tribute to honor George’s memory.  And for those who wish to make a donation, you can do so by sending a check payable to:

A wonderful story of perseverance occurred this week as 62 year old swimmer Diana Nyad succeeded in concurring the waves, jelly fish and shark infested salt water between Cuba and Key West on her 5th (and most likely final) attempt.  She was jubilant and her message to all is always chase your dreams no matter what the obstacles.

Wishing you and your loved ones a Sweet and Peaceful Shabbat Shalom and Healthy Shana Tova,

Lisa

Dear Friends and Family,

With a heavy heart and a wounded spirit, we mourn the untimely passing of (20 year old) George Orley, beloved son of Diane and Randy and cherished brother of Amanda and Sam.  George was a sweet soul and avid sportsman.  He was a force to be reckoned with on both the basketball and tennis courts.  As you can see from these photos, he had a twinkle in his eye and a heart of gold. He will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing and loving him.  We loved him as our son’s close and dear friend and as our close and dear friends’ son.

Rest in Peace, dear George.  May your spirit soar freely and peacefully.

******************************************************

It is truly a time of sadness for our Community as one of our Patriarchs (a mentor to Hannan and many others) also passed away this week.  Emery Klein was a holocaust survivor and Detroit Community booster like no other.  When Emery called you…Yes, was always the answer.  He was passionate about fundraising and he did it with kindness and consideration. His family and our community were lucky to have him in our lives. May his memory as a devoted family man and his legacy as a community leader bring comfort to all of us who mourn his passing.

*********************************************************

On a happier note, we welcome our daughter and son-in-law, Ariella and Tzvi, to Michigan this week as they move back home to insure superb babysitters for our first granddaughter due in early November.  We might need a house charge at Inn Seasons in Royal Oak since their new home is only 2 blocks away.

Life imitated art this week… while watching one of my favorite (Aaron Sorkin) shows, Newsroom, the characters struggled with the decision to broadcast a story about a (possible) chemical weapons attack when in real life, Syria DID drop chemical weapons on its citizens.  This was President Obama’s Red Line yet deciding on how to respond is nearly impossible due to the players on both sides. There is no clear cut ally in any of the Arab Spring uprisings which always leaves Israel in a very precarious position.

Apparently though, a few persistent and vocal (anti-Semitic) Ann Arborites think Israel is the cause of ALL evil.  They have been spewing hate with placards and bullhorns in front of Congregation Beth Israel for 10 years. YES, 10 constant years… that’s 520 Shabbat Services (with many B’nai Mitzvah celebrations), 10 Rosh Hashana services, 10 Yom Kippur services and numerous Israel Celebration festivities.  It is SO frustrating to walk past these people, which we have done a few times, but for regular shul goers, they must endure the torture every week. The community has tried all means to rid themselves of these hate-mongers and now thanks to many others in the Ann Arbor religious community a collective letter has been sent to the City Council. I’m not sure the protesters will care much about this effort, but we can only hope… You can read all about this frustrating situation at this website:http://annarbor.com/news/beth-israel-congregants-reflect-on-10-years-of-protests-outside-synagogue-we-certainly-didnt-ask-for/?cmpid=NL_DH_mainphoto#.Uhn4v4aifYQ.email  and here is the excellent letter (initiated by Revered James Rhodenhiser) to the City Council asking them to denounce the protester’s actions: http://www.annarbor.com/Rhodenhiser_letter_081913.pdf

As our New Year quickly approaches (in just 5 days), I want to take this opportunity to wish all of you a Healthy Sweet and Peaceful 5774 and I pray this coming year will bring you much joy and satisfaction.  Hope you enjoy this wonderful video:  http://www.aish.com/h/hh/video/Get-Clarity-Aishcoms-Rosh-Hashanah-Music-Video.html

George Orley of Blessed Memory

Dear Friends and Family,

Sadly our community lost a vibrant and beautiful soul this week.  20 year old George Orley (of blessed memory) passed away Monday and our hearts are broken by this tragedy.

For those who wish to attend the funeral, it is Thursday at 2:00pm and has been moved to Congregation Shaarey Zedek (27375 Bell Rd., Southfield, 48034).

May George’s spirit and memory bring comfort to those who loved him.

Lisa

For those who don’t know the Orleys or George, I’m sorry for the intrusion of this mass email but it is the most efficient way to disseminate this timely message.
