Shabbat Shalom April 25, 2014

Dear Friends and Family,

“Stay Thirsty My Friends”
Did you know, The Most Interesting Man in the World is a nice Jewish actor who lives a quiet life in Vermont with his wife and two dogs.  He based his accent on his good friend, Fernando Lamas. “You look Maarvelous”  Here is a brief interview of how he got his Dos Equis Beer spokesperson job:

Savor  Sundays
Check out Billy Crystal’s 700 Sundays currently on HBO.

Hannan and I were sitting in the 4th row (on the left) during the taping of this Broadway performances. Billy only had 700 Sundays before his father died when Billy was only 15-years-old. Treasure your Family “Sundays” whether they are Friday nights, Tuesday afternoons or Saturday mornings.

Poor Choice
Hey kids, treasure your families BUT if you decide to run away, a jetliner wheel-well is not the smartest mode of transportation.  A 16-year-old hopped a fence at the San Jose, CA airport and cuddled next to the airplane’s rubber-treads before passing out from a lack of oxygen and severe low temps. He landed in Hawaii but doctors say his body and brain will have long-term affects and I assumed he parents will “ground” him for life.

 Nation’s Strength
In March alone, more than 30 rockets blasted from Gaza toward Israel.  Did you hear about it in the News? It’s so ironic how Jews are often criticized for controlling the Media (among many other anti-semitic rants) however the Media rarely picks up the attacks against Israel OR the Global humanitarian efforts of Israelis and Jews.  Just this week, Gaza sent 7 more rockets into Southern Israel and again it was missed by the major media.  Our extreme defense system continues to protect us but where was our protection in the 1930s when Hitler’s plan was taking root.  This Monday is Yom HaShoah, our remembrance day for the victims of the Holocaust and the Heros. We remember the victims as well as the warriors who fought back, like those of the Warsaw Uprising. 6 Million Jewish souls (among millions of other victims: Pols, Slavs, POWs, Gays, disabled, mentally ill…), were brutally murdered during that evil period.  The first Yom HaShoah was observed in 1953 and written into law by Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion. On Yom HaShoah, Israeli shops are closed, Israeli TV and Radio reflect the day and memorial ceremonies take place throughout the country. It is also a time when Israeli High School students accompany Jews from around the world and Holocaust survivors on a March of the Living at Auschwitz to proudly display that Hitler’s plan failed miserably as we are a strong peoplehood and a strong Nation.
 Union of Hate
Sometimes its hard to tell who the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, despises more, the Israelis or Hamas.  This week his chosen partner is the Terrorist Organization that controls Gaza. Of course, the European Union blessed this marriage even though they see Hamas’ true colors.  Supposedly, the partnership agreement included the acceptance of a Two-State Solution, which means Hamas must accept the existence
of Israel. The PA and Hamas have bonded in the past only to end in divorce.  We’ll see how long this union last.

Union of Love
She is Sunni, He is Shiite and They are in love. They met as children when tending to animals as their families farms were next to each other. This love affair warrants a death sentence, yet these two Afghanis risked their lives to become a couple.  They secretly wed and are now hiding out in the remote mountains of their country planning and hoping for a safe place to call home. If found by their families or the Afghanistan authorities, their lives will be over. http://tinyurl.com/afghanlove

                               Forbidden Love
Collect Confidence
My new motto is to be a Warrior not a Worrier.  We all have self-doubt and the occasional lack of self confidence, but we must forge forward in our lives as Warriors against our internal and external obstacles.

Youthful Activism
Madison Kimrey is a 12-year-old Warrior.  She is the brightest young political star I’ve ever seen.  Madison recently wrote a brilliant open letter to (the extremely anti-progressive) Phyllis Schlaflyabout women’s choices http://samuel-warde.com/2014/04/open-letter-phyllis-schlafly-12-year-old-madison-kimrey-guest-post/
and has spoken out at rallies about voting rightshttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CRSK0HItoI
I look forward to watching continue her activism.

Speak Up
Be Brave to stand up, speak up and help improve the world, like Madison Kimrey.  Sara Bereilles provides this exact message in this entertaining youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUQsqBqxoR4  The lyrics are powerful and the dance move are fun to watch.

Encourage Diversity
4% and decreasing (since our Michigan populous voted against Affirmative Action) is the percentage of African American students now at U of M.  Hispanic student percents also have dropped. Diversity brings new viewpoints, creativity, innovation and understanding. Our country’s diversity should be MORE accurately represented in our Universities, Boardrooms and Legislative Halls… not LESS.

Beautiful Words
Alex Zaslow and her beloved father, Jeff Zaslow (z’l) share the love of conveying a meaningful message through expressive words.  Here is Alex’s recent Huffpost about her family’s devotion to The Boss.  It also includes a bonus youtube of the sweet tunes of Jordan Zaslow.  They sure are a talented family.

Wishing you and your family a Sweet and Peaceful Shabbat Shalom,

My Next Life
By: (the late) George Carlin
I want to live my next life backwards:
You start out dead and get that out of the way.
Then you wake up in a nursing home feeling better every day.
Then you get kicked out for being too healthy.
Then enjoy your retirement and collect all of your pension.
Then when you start work, you get a gold watch on your first day.
You work 30-40 years until you’re too young to work.
You get ready for High School: drink alcohol, party, and you’re generally promiscuous.
Then you go to primary school, you become a kid, you play, and you have no responsibilities.
Then you become a baby, and then…
You spend your last 9 months floating peacefully in Spa-like conditions – Central heating, room service on tap, and then…
You finish off as an orgasm.
I rest my case.

Mazel Tov to this year’s Eight Over Eighty Awardees for their continued efforts in our community.  They will be honored on Sunday May 4th @ 11:30am.  For more info:

Condolences to the families of the 13 Sherpas who died on Mt. Everest last week and to the families of the 3 Sherpas who are still missing.  Risking their lives for the thrill of the foreigners’ climb is now debated among their community, yet the lucrative pay is quite appealing to them.

His opponent, Terri Lynn Land has happily accepted the endorsement of the Family Research Council (a national entity who’s main goal is to attack the Gay Community). Here’s is Wikipedia’s definition:
Also, she boasts about working at her family’s Trailer Park as a child but once she owned it as an adult, she evicted all of the tenants and attempted to rezone it for commercial use but the City’s planning commission and the Land family couldn’t come to an agreement so the land continues to sit empty after families were forced to leave.

Shabbot Shalom April 25, 2014

Shabbot Shalom April 18, 2014

Shabbat Shalom & Hag Pesach Sameach April 18, 2014

Dear Friends and Family,

“The Passover story has always had special meaning. We come from different places and diverse backgrounds, but we are bound together by a journey.” – President Obama*

Journey of Identity
While we safely and freely celebrate Passover, the Jewish Community in Eastern Ukraine were handed threatening flyers asking them to register their identities and pay a special tax. The source of these flyers are unknown however they sound dangerously reminiscent of the 1930s. Hopefully the world won’t tolerate this discrimination as John Kerry and his cohorts try to ease the regional pressures; Though Putin seems to care very little about our US pressures.

Fish Journey
I hope your 2014 Passover Journey has brought something new to your life, whether a new friend was met at a Seder or you learned something new during the Hagaddah service.  Now that we are in our 4th day of Matzah eating, I also hope your digestive systems are still running smoothly.  Maybe the Gefilte Fish (Yiddish word for “Stuffed”) eased your inside plumbing but did you know that because of our Winter Polar Vortex, there is a Gefilte Fish shortage. The Whitefish population shrunk in our Great Lakes but I hope your table was ample in its supply of the delectable “Stuffed Fish”http://www.nydailynews.com/life-style/eats/gefilte-crisis-whitefish-shortage-passover-woes-article-1.1756897

Journey of Hatred
Sadly, the day before we began our Passover celebration, the evil eye of Hatred and Anti-Semitism reared it’s deadly head with the senseless killing of 3 innocent souls who happened to be at the Kansas City JCC and Elderly Facility called Village Shalom. Though the Crazed Racist targeted Jews, he ended the lives of 3 people who weren’t Jewish. The victims were Dr. William Lewis Corporon, his 14-year-old grandson, Reat Griffin Underwood (who was auditioning for a musical at the JCC) and Terri LaManno, a mother of two (who was visiting her mother at the nursing home). Condolences to the whole Kansas City community on this tragedy and may the perpetrator be punished to the fullest extent. And shame of the Mayor of the murderer’s home town as they match their anti-semitic views:
http://www.timesofisrael.com/mayor-of-kansas-shooters-hometown-i-agree-with-his-views/

ILL-Fated Journey
Nearly 300 people are still missing from a South Korean Ferry that sank in the Yellow Sea this week.  Many on board were High School students headed to a resort island off the South Korean coast. Major ill-fated errors were made by the captain like telling everyone to stay put and only deploying 1 of the 46 lifeboats. Frigid waters were the fate of most on board and though nearly 200 people were rescued, many are still missing.

Journey of Records
Some records do not elicit pride and Michigan’s 2014 Winter was a doozy as (this week) we broke the record (held since 1881) for the most amount of snow (94.7 inches).  Other “cool” stats were the coldest average temps 20.9 degrees and 13 consecutive days below zero. I predict (and we deserve) a beautiful Spring, Summer and Fall.

Earth’s Journey
Next Tuesday April 22nd the 44th anniversary of Earth Day. There are many local and national events planned to celebrate Mother Nature and help protect her.  If each of us conscientiously changed our behavior even minimally to help save the environment (like recycling more or eliminating plastic water bottles) our children’s children’s children would be deeply grateful. National: http://www.earthday.org/greencities/
Local: http://oaklandcountymoms.com/earth-day-events-metro-detroit-michigan-25592/

Journey of our Dollar
Last Tuesday was Tax Day.  I hope it wasn’t too painful for any of you.  If you agree with Warren Buffet that his tax bracket shouldn’t be lower than his secretary’s, then you’ll want to watch this creative and informative video by Robert Reich (former US Labor Secretary):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdV_CfDRjDc

Journey to Enjoyment
Did you know that our Torah requires us to be HAPPY (besimcha:in a state of happiness), during all of our holidays. And this happiness must also extend to all in our household. Among the many responsibilities in our lives, staying Happy and helping your loved ones feel joy is one of our 613 commandments.  Though staying Happy is sometimes difficult, it helps to focus on ALL of the positives in our lives and push aside the jealous and envious feelings. Relinquish those self-doubts. No one is perfect. Doing the Right Thing when choices are an option helps us feel content. Embrace those who support us and ignore those who don’t.  Here are 30 great (life-enhancing) tips. Number 4 speaks directly to the topic of Happiness:

Post Post Post Script: Please VACCINATE your kids! Sadly the trend to pass on vaccinations is growing yet this selfish act puts the vulnerable of our population (babies, elderly, immune deficient) at a deadly risk. There is NO evidence that vaccines are dangerous. They SAVE LIVES all over the world as modern medicine continues to improve and evolve. Please do your homework from legitimate sources before you make this life threatening decision:

Wishing good friend, Carolyn Tisdale a rapid recovery from her leg surgery. Hope the healing process allows her to swing a few golf clubs this Summer.
The whole region is praying for a complete and speedy recovery for the mob-beating victim Steve Utash after his car hit a child who ran into the street. Seems he is improving each day but he has a very long and difficult journey ahead of him.  Brava! to retired nurse, Deborah Huges who ran to his rescue:

His opponent, Ms. Land, believes Women would prefer flexibility over equal pay.  Why are Flexibility and Equal Pay an “either/or” option? Equal pay for doing the Same Work seems obvious. We’ve come a long way from our past errors and we need to continue on the correction path.
Bravo to the Federal Judge Daniel L. Hovland who overturned North Dakota’s unconstitutional and restrictive Abortion Law(signed by ND’s governor) that halted pregnancy terminations if a Heartbeat is detected.  Heartbeat detection occurs around 6 weeks, even before some women know they are pregnant. Though this hurdle was successful, many other states still have very restrictive abortion laws that need to be fought. Thank you Planned Parenthood, NARAL, JAC, Emily’s List and many others for using your bullhorns in support of women who’s voices are sometimes only a whisper.

Shabbat Shalom & Hag Pesach Sameach April 11, 2014

Dear Friends and Family,

Survival
The Mayans, Babylonians, Sumerians, Assyrians…have all gone extinct.  In each case historian can explain their disappearance, but my question (thankfully) is WHY and HOW have the Jews been Passed Over for extinction for so many millennium and with so many attempts to extinguish us. Is it our Ethical Code, our Family Connectivity, our emphasis on Community, our importance of Education, our Generational Continuity, our Diet, our Humor…Who knows?  But, our traditions seem to play an important role.  This week begins one of our most favored and elaborate traditions with our Passover Holiday.  Its the opportunity when we recall our exodus from Slavery to Freedom. We have a 15 Step Seder (ceremony) where we hide food for kids to find, drip wine out of our cups, dip parsley in salt water, eat horseradish, recline on pillows among many other strange rituals just to creatively pass along our history to our next generation. This recollection of slavery reminds us that even today many are enslaved (both physically and emotional) and it is our jobs to help bring Freedom to all.  Here is this year’s Passover video with a “Frozen” twist: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwBuNtd4xAY

Stop Genocide
It is 20 years too late for the 1 Million Rwandans who were massacred April 1994. The anniversary is our reminder that the world must keep vigilant for warning signs to prevent future genocide. Please continue to support the US Holocaust Memorial Museum (and other agencies) who are committed to keeping tabs on potential human rights abuse to help keep our world citizens safe.
Music Legends

Yusef Islam
*For Cat Stevens’ fans like myself, here is a lyrical piece he wrote for Rolling Stone Magazine about his Hall of Fame selection.  He includes many of his songs characters in a sweet story in the beginning and then moves on to elaborate on his life and the world’s reaction to his chosen religion of Islam. http://tinyurl.com/CatSteven-s-RS-Article
Peace Efforts

After days of disintegration and with the recent blockage of communication between these two neighbors, this image sadly represents the Israel/PA Peace Talks.

…and then it just disappeared off the radar!
Hillary’s Dodge
I have little respect for former Pres. Carter for the bias he’s shown against Israel in his books and visits to the region; So his meaningless comments this week criticizing the Middle East peace efforts of Hillary Clinton and Pres. Obama hold no weight in my book.  Presidents Carter, Clinton and Obama were all together this week at the Civil Rights Summit (See related story below). Hillary didn’t need to dodge Carter’s words but she did need to dodge a shoe that was thrown at her in Las Vegas this week while she was speaking at a Recycling Trade Show.  No reason was given for the shoe toss but here’s a look, if you are interested:
Resignation
Now that ACA has exceeded its goals and continues to gain momentum, Kathleen Sebelius (Sec. of Health and Human Services) has resigned.  This seemed inevitable during the botched (and inexcusable) launch (several months ago) of the Website, but mistakes were corrected and more Americans continue to access affordable Health insurance each day.

6 Year Old Hero
Condolences to those who knew and loved sweet, charming, little Lacey Holsworth who passed away this week.  She stole the hearts of the MSU basketball team and supporters especially Adreian Payne. May her young life spur courage and charity to help find a cure for the deadly disease of Cancer.

Adreian and Lacey

WHY???
22 students were injured in Pennsylvania this week from a knife-wielding student.  Thank God he didn’t have access to a gun but the other half of our mass killing equation is Mental Illness and there is still a lack of much needed attention, funding, innovative research and treatments to help combat this disease.

Sad Reunion
In 10 days, our country will remember the 1 year anniversary of the tragic terrorist bombing in Boston.  Runners, supporters, victims’ families and survivors will take part in the Marathon through the streets of Boston that will surly bring back sad memories yet showcase much strength and bravery.

Boston Mararton Monday April 21, 2014 Patriot Day in MA

A Tip of the Hat
Sometime in 2015 the Comedy Central network will bid farewell toStephen Colbert as he heads over to CBS to take over the reins for retiring talk show host, David Letterman.  I will miss Stephen’s Conservative Character, but hopefully he will come out to visit on occasion. This announcement will put a serious dent in my remote control as choosing between Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Colbert will be mighty difficult.

Wishing you and your family a Sweet and Peaceful Shabbat Shalom and a joyous Passover,

Lisa

Condolences to our Machatunim, Rina and Roni Raviv and our Son-in-law, Tzvi plus their whole family on the passing of Roni’s mother,Rachel Rosa Rabinowitz (z”l). An early Zionist who struggled through Poland and Argentina to arrive
permanently in Israel in 1972 and who we share our lovely Hadassa as her Great-Granddaughter.

Condolences to the Wayne family on the passing of Larry Wayne (z”l) age 90. Larry was a friendly vibrant man who I remember welcoming our family to their 4th of July parties back in the 1960s and sharing his Holocaust story to the younger generation to help educate our future.  He seemed to love life whenever I saw him throughout the community and his presence will be greatly missed. May his spirit, love and memories bring comfort to those who are in mourning.

Condolences to Rabbi Eric Grossman on the passing of his father, Joseph Grossman (z”l). May his memories bring comfort to those who loved him.

RIP Mickey Rooney age 93.  Enjoy this little ditty from a throwback era: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djB7W2vh-Yk

Future Senator Gary Peters
VOTE NOV. 4th and keep repeating this Montra to ALL.
Update on Terri Lynn Land’s first public Press Call. While in Lansing last week to submit her 25,000 signature requirement, she answered a few questions with the Press.  She reiterated her efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act.  She emphasized her belief that Traditional marriage is only between a man and a woman but when asked about Crimea, she indicated that her time was up. Was her time up or was she just not prepared to answer foreign affairs questions?  We need a Senator who is educated on both domestic and foreign affairs and can represent both our Michigan and National best interest.  Gary is that candidate and the Michigan polls are proving this as the latest Public Policy Poll has Gary taking over the lead.
Civil Rights Act of 1964
Happy 50th birthday to the Civil Rights Act that prevented the discrimination based on Race, Color, Religion, Sex or National Origin. This week the LBJ Library held a Civil Rights Summit to Spotlight the past and future of our country’s equality issues.   Much progress has occurred within the last 50 years but we still have more equalizing to do.
Equal Pay for Equal Work
What is the rational to vote against a bill that would equalize the pay for women working in comparable jobs to men?  The Paycheck Fairness Act was to shrink inequities and prevent punishment for workers who share salary info.  Yet, it was blocked in the Senate this week.  Where is the Fairness in that?
Budget BS
Even with ALL of the Democrats and 12 Republicans voting against it, Paul Ryans (BS) Budget passed the House this week, though it is only a symbolic act with no “teeth”. It’s main focus is to eliminate the Affordable Care Act (with no plans for an alternative), decrease taxes for high income individual & corporation and increase Military spending through 2024.  Sounds like a “Plan” worth supporting!?!

Shabbot Shalom April 4, 2014

Spring-filled Shabbat Shalom April 4, 2014

Dear Friends and Family,

Fort Hood
What causes a tragic shooting to occur twice in four years on the same grounds of Fort Hood Military Base? Is it easy access to firearms, lack of attention to mental illness… These questions will continue to plague our society as continued mass shootings persist.   We need more action to help prevent these tragedies. Prayers for the families of the 4 fatalities (including the shooter) and the for 16 injured.

Chile
An 8.2 magnitude earthquake plus a 7.5 foot tsunami hit the coastline of Chili this week.  Whether this is a pre-glow to the “Big One” is unknown but Mother Earth sure seems mighty feisty lately.

ACA
NO…“Armageddon has not arrived. Instead, this law is helping millions of Americans and in the coming years it will help millions more” POTUS/ 4-1-14.  As the Stats are still being tabulated and the March 31st deadline was stretched, it appears the 7 million enrollee target was exceeded.  Procrastinators PLUS those with pre-conditions PLUS more kids on parent’s plan PLUS those now eligible under the expanded Medicaid options (in certain States, like Michigan) will ADD up to a Healthier American Population (both medically and fiscally).

McCutcheon and the RNC
What’s NOT healthy is this week’s SCOTUS (Supreme Court) decision to allow EVEN more billionaire influence on our already lopsided campaign finance rules.  It removed the restriction on the total amount in combination(previously $123,200) you can give to various candidates in a 2-year election cycle. These restriction (now being eliminated) were instituted to prevent corruption.  The campaign dollar sign continues to strengthen and muffle out the mainstream voices. The issues of the Wealthiest Few will be reflected in the candidates they will shower millions to elect.

Turkey
Seems old school forms of communication are preferred by The Turkish Republic as they have recently banned Twitter and Youtube (with Facebook not far behind) from their arsenal of social interaction options. Prime Minister Erdogan thinks his enemies are using these sites to sabotage his re-election campaign.

Afghanistan
Another country nearing elections is Afghanistan.  Even though the Taliban were overthrown in 2001, they still reek havoc in the country. Remember, they were the ones who blew up the ancient priceless giant Buddha statues in early 2001 and just this week they made a deadly goof when they meant to massacre a Christian Day Care Center but entered the building next door to find a heavily guarded American contractor office which flipped the massacre back onto the Taliban thugs.
http://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/29/world/asia/taliban-militants-attack-kabul-house-and-trap-foreigners.html?_r=0

Hope these new Afghan elections can secure the permanent elimination of ALL Taliban members and supporters.

Chris Christie
When running for office, it is essential to select your words carefully and know your audience.  Now whether you use the term “Judea and Samaria” or “West Bank” or “Occupied Territory” determines your political slant.  But when invited by Sheldon Adelson to  speak before the Republican Jewish Coalition, you might want to make sure you use the correct term, which Gov. Chris Christie mistakenly did NOT do.  Using Occupied Territory in front of that crowd could invite hostility. An immediate private apology to Mr. Adelson took place following the speech, but was it enough for the Jewish republicans community? We’ll see who they back in 2016. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-fix/wp/2014/04/01/why-chris-christies-occupied-territory-remark-was-significant/

Peace
We were SO close to getting Jonathan Pollard released in connections to the Peace Talks but this week progress hit the skids as PA Pres. Abbas attempted backstage maneuvering at the UN and Israel halted the release of the last batch of prisoners. Will Peace in the region ever exist?  Is it even possible? While Israel is willing to release murderers and terrorist for the sake of Peace, Mr. Abbas won’t even acknowledge Israel has the right to exist as a Jewish State.

Pat Robertson
I assume most of you don’t watch Pat Robertson’s 700 club but if you had this week, you would have found out “Why Jews are so rich”.  Shamefully, a Rabbi Daniel Lapin was his guest to perpetuate this “newsworthy”  topic.

Wishing you and your family a Sweet and Peaceful Shabbat Shalom,

Lisa

Our Community lost a devoted soul who stood for justice, compassion, philanthropy and Tikkun Olam.  Linda Lee died (age 69) early Monday morning within a couple weeks of first learning of her Pancreatic cancer diagnosis.  She was a true leader who touched so many lives with her many passions.  May her spirit, love, memories and life’s philosophy bring comfort to those who mourn her loss.

Condolences to Bob Aronson and his family on the passing of his beloved mother, Deborah Feingold Aronson (age 88) of Milwaukee, WI.  May her memory and love bring comfort to Bob and his family.

VOTE NOV. 4th and keep repeating this Montra to ALL.
1. After Ms. Land’s supporters (Right To Life) attacked Gary’s daughters in an offensive ad, Gary pledged to keep candidate’s children OUT of the campaign mudslinging however Ms. Land refused to reciprocate this moral request.
2. The GOP are ratcheting up efforts to limit voter turnout (especially among poor voters) by adding more restrictions to our already restrictive voting process.  Less voters from lower income populations means less votes for the Democrats. Simple Math.  In the last 15 months alone, 9 States have instituted laws to make it harder to vote even after evidence shows we don’t have a voter fraud problem : http://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/30/us/new-gop-bid-to-limit-voting-in-swing-states.html?hpw&rref=us&_r=0

Bravo to US Attorney General Eric Holder for providing federal recognition of the 300 Michigan Gay Marriages performed last week which grants them equal eligibility for Federal benefits.  They remain in Michigan Marriage Limbo as does the future of Michigan Marriage Equality till it works its way up the court system.
Bravo to the Indian Government (with help from the Gates Foundation) for reaching the Polio-Free 3-year mark. Sadly many neighboring countries still continue to experience outbreaks but hopefully one day soon we can eradicate this disease from our planet.
Bravo to Barbara Cohn on her dedicated efforts at the Detroit Public Library (main branch on Woodward) to restore the enthusiasm to the stately building by providing fascinating tours of its hidden gems. I highly recommend this wonderful experience:
