Shabbat Shalom Aug. 14, 2015

Shabbat Shalom
August 14, 2015
Dear family and friends,
Back to the Routine
Travelling is wonderful (especially to Israel) but coming home is always so sweet. Much has happened during my two week writing sabbatical…A Wing Flap was discovered, Jon Stewartbid farewell, Jonathan Pollard got a break, Cecil was killed,Jewish/Israeli terrorist killed innocent lives, Planned Parenthood and Voting Rights are (again) under attacked and the GOP candidates debated their popularity. With all this news to catch up on, you might need to pace yourself while reading this week’s email.
The Deal
The big news that continues to dominate our consciousness
is the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, better known as the Iran Deal. Whether you are For or Against the deal, the bottom line goal for all is a less threatening Iran and a more peaceful future. Most would agree it is a flawed plan but is it better than no deal at all?  For several years, Iran, an arch enemy of Israel, regional countries and western democracies (especially the US) has been scheming to build a nuclear bomb. Analysts have been tracking their imminent progress which led to global “crippling” sanctions that apparently didn’t stall their nuclear efforts.  So, a diplomatic attempt was tried and a deal was blessed by the eager partnering countries (France, Germany, UK, China & Russia) plus the UN and now the two final “partners” (US and Iran) need to christen the deal. The US Congress will most likely vote against the deal on Sept. 17th, and unless there is a super majority, the President will veto the vote and the Deal will be done, of course assuming, the final “partner” Iran signs on the dotted line. The Deal’s merits are heavily debated as many feel it didn’t go far enough since it will allow Iran to obtain a nuclear bomb in 10-15 years while their bank accounts will be immediately flushed with $150 billion, their military arsenal will be boasted, sanctions will be lifted and their acceptance into the global trade fold will be welcomed. This parody of an Iranian negotiator “comedically” illustrates the concerns of many: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hIz_vkZH5k  and for a 2nd visual, check out Dennis Prager’s take on the dilemma: http://www.prageruniversity.com/Political-Science/The-Iran-Nuclear-Deal.html#.VckabyZVhBd  And, lastly, here is a perspective of an Iranian, who references a 100,000 person Iranian demonstration in Paris that warns of the true intent of the current Iranian leadership.
The Decision
Researching and Soul Searching have consumed our legislators as they publicly approve or vow to vote against the deal. Most, if not all, Republicans will vote against the deal. The big news last week was (the prominent Democratic) Senator Chuck Schumer‘s announcement against the deal. He carefully studied the material, attended classified briefings and did not let “pressure, politics or party” influence his decision.  Whichever side you are on is frankly irrelevant. Since the partnering countries and the UN have already ratified the deal, arguing your position won’t change the situation we must face that in the near future (even if or in spite of Congress’ disapproval), Iran will need extensive scrutiny which means Israel will need extra military defenses. Israel is strong and smart and will prevail with the help of her (continued) best friend, the United States.  We must sustain our support of our representatives on both sides of the isle, regardless of their vote. Yes, it is an important vote, but it is one of many we elect them to debate. We cannot alienate our leaders over this extremely conflicting issue, who, on both sides hope for a more peaceful world. We must be united to deal with the future. Ambassador Dan Shapiro is correct when he urges Israel (Bibi) to stop arguing and start negotiating protective cooperation with the United States. http://www.timesofisrael.com/us-envoy-netanyahu-wont-talk-about-day-after-deal/
Tuesday Aug. 18th
And speaking of Senator Chuck Schumer, this will be my last invitation to support Chuck for all his efforts as a highly respected and influential legislator, by attending the fundraiser we are hosting in our home this Tuesday Aug. 18th.  Please email me and I’ll give you all the details.
Shalom Jon
Senator Schumer was a regular guest on Jon Stewart’s Daily Show with his recent appearance just a few weeks ago to expose Jon’s “hidden” nationality.  Though Jon pretends to have disguised his Jewish identity, the real Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz is revealed in this clip:
And for those of you who just can’t get enough of Jon Stewart, here is the Forward’s top 18 Jewish segments:
But for all his shtick, Jon Stewart was a stalwart supporter of progressive thought and with humor and wisdom he exposed the world’s atrocities and newsworthy moments while entertaining and educating an audience who may never have paid attention to the vital issue of the day. He stuck to his values and shared opinions that weren’t always to my liking, however his consistency and brilliance was always respected. He was a catalyst to the brightest talent and helped jumpstart their careers.  Stephen Colbert expresses his (and all of our) appreciation for enlightening our lives for the last 16 years.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Mh7WICqrxI
Pollard Parole
Another famous Jonathan made the news recently.  After 3 decades behind bars with a Life Sentence and seemingly no chance of parole, suddenly (around the same time as the Iran Deal), Jonathan Pollard (convicted spy who passed US secrets to our ally, Israel) will be given his freedom. This is the most mysterious case as to why he was sent away longer than any other spy committing a similar crime and why they never would allow his release until now.  On Nov. 20th, Jonathan Pollard will be released from prison however he will be restricted from travel for 5 years, even though he is now an Israeli citizen.  Upon the completion of his 5 year parole requirement, it is expected he will moved to Israel.
Family Treason

Another Jewish spy is back in the news as the children of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg are desperately trying to exonerate their mother, Ethel, as being falsely accused (by her brother to protect his wife) and wrongfully executed for being a Soviet spy. http://tinyurl.com/RosenbergExecution

Trophy Hunt
Cecil the lion was trophy murdered by luring him out of his sanctuary, hitting him was an arrow, tracking him for 40 more hours and then killing him with a gun.  This expedition cost, the, now hiding, American dentist, 50 grand. It exposed the abhorrent (to many) sport of trophy hunts but, like most, there are two sides to this story. Hunting in any form to me is unacceptable, but for many it is part of nature.  The locals in Zimbabwe shed no tears for the dead lion.  In fact, they probably applauded that one less Lion will be threatening their livestock and family. In theory, the profits of these expensive trophy hunts should be used to assist the local communities but in developing countries, government corruption probably syphons the much needed funds leaving little or nothing for the locals. Two other confirmed famous hunters who aren’t in hiding are Donald Trump Jr. and Jimmy John Liautaud.
Roar of Protection
Another lioness, Cecile Richards, is roaring with protection over the continued attacks against Planned Parenthood. Ignorance and closed mindedness continue to threathen the lifesaving and vital work of PP.  Fools who think eliminating legal abortions and birth control information (plus women’s health screenings) will benefit our society have got their heads stuck somewhere unseamly. Decreasing abortion will only increase dangerous desperate attempts.  Nearly 1 in 3 women will have at least one abortion in their lifetime and feel motherhood should be voluntary. This straight forward NYTimes article speaks volumes about the need for more of these women to speak up. http://tinyurl.com/NYTimePParticle
The truth is spoken in this Funny or Die parody video:
And who says it better than, Amy Schumer. The end of her message brings it all to “life”:
And bravo to Mark Zuckerberg for donating nearly a Billion Dollars (in Facebook stock) to charities which fund Planned Parenthood: http://samuel-warde.com/2014/02/zuckerberg-donates-992-million-charity-funds-planned-parenthood/
Gold Mine Spill
100 Miles of River through 3 States have been polluted by 3 Million tons of toxic waste that got mistakenly dumped into theAnimas River last week. Our government’s agency, the EPA (established to protect the environment) was the culprit to the accident while it was working in the inactive gold mine.

BS…

…to another Jewish terrorist who burned the home of a West Bank Arab Family that killed a father and his baby. The mother and sibling are still recovering and in serious condition. Shame on anyone who was involved or even instigated this despicable act.
Shalom Salaam
Though there is much more news of the week to discuss (the Clean Power Plan, Our Teacher Shortage, China industrial warehouse blast, Syrian refugees,…) I have run out of time and room and will pick up where I left off next Friday. By the way, if you are wondering where all the political news is… I have quarantined it to the Political Section below. For now, I wish you and your loved ones a Sweet and Peaceful Shabbat Shalom,
Lisa

Little House in the 8th District
Local and national celebrity, Melissa Gilbert, just announced her bid for the US Congressional seat in our MI 8th District (parts of Ingham, Livingston and Oakland County). She and her husband (actor Timothy Busfield, a Michigander) moved here in 2013. She is running as a democrat in a safe republican district but maybe her fame will assist her effort and her goals will resonate with locals.  She does have a blotch on her record as she’s currently repaying the IRS for back taxes.
Reality Stranger than Fiction
Speaking of Michigan Politics, shame on State Legislators, Todd Courser and Cindy Gamrat for their scandalous affair and the absurd attempt to hide their actions with a bizarre fake blackmail email trail.
Big Stage for the Big Race
With 451 days till the Nov. 8, 2016 election, the Republicans and Fox News hosted their first debate last week in Cleveland, OH. With 17 voices to hear, the organizers had to split the scene. The bottom polling 7 aired their views earlier in the day with analysts announcing Carly Fiorina as the top performer while the Prime Time stage allowed for the blow horn of Trump to dominate with his blunt views.  The next debate will be Sept. 16th in Simi Valley, California.
Who’s on Top
The current polls have the following candidates at the top of the list.  Since we are still over a year away, these names will change many time, at least in the Republican race:

Repealing Citizens United should be on the forefront of all Americans (other than billionaires and Corporations) as it is by far one of the worst corrupting decisions that currently plagues our nation.  Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is an outspoken opponent of CU so if you’d like to thank her for her wisdom, please click here:

Shabbat Shalom from Tel Aviv
July 31, 2015
Dear family and friends,
Sabbatical
Prior to departing for two weeks in Israel, I have pre-written my Shabbat emails for these travel days.  So any big news that happens while I’m away will be covered in emails upon my return home.  I am often asked the reason I write these emails and my top reply is, always…enjoyment.  I truly relish the creative and research process of looking for interesting and newsworthy information to share with you and selecting graphics, cartoons and photos to highlight the topics. I’m hoping all this research is good for my brain. But I also appreciate vacation down times when thoughts of returning to my computer are on sabbatical.  After nearly 6 years and about 300 consecutives Shabbat emails (I’ve never missed a week), it is now my hobby/habit to reach out to friends and family each Friday morning to wish you “Shabbat Shalom”.  I plan to continue these weekly messages until my brain and/or fingers no longer work…hopefully for a very long time.
RFK’s love for Israel
With Israel as today’s topic, here is a story from a few weeks ago about Robert F. Kennedy and his daughter, Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, who attended the Herzliya Conferenceto memorialize his life and pay tribute to his commitment to Israel. It was his devotions to Israel that cost his life at the hands of Palestinian, Sirhan Sirhan.
Debate
Aug. 6th will be the first Republican Debate and as I’m writing this, it is unclear as to which 10 candidates will get to attend. Should be very entertaining with the wide variety of characters.
Wishing you and your loved ones a Sweet and Peaceful Shabbat Shalom,
Lisa
Condolences to dear friend, Wendy Stone and her family, on the passing of her father, Sanford “Sandy” Eichenhorn z”l at the age of  77.  Sandy was the past president of Adat Shalom and grandfather to 10 grandchildren.  May Sandy’s memory be a blessing to all who loved him.  Special hugs and love to Wendy, Josh, Zach and Rachel on their loss.
Addendum
I found a few minutes to update this week’s email. On the saddest day of our Jewish calendar, Tisha b’Av, our beloved 104 year old Aunt Chilly passed away.  Her life was filled with love, family, health and she possessed a very optimistic attitude to the every end. She was loved by all and will be greatly missed.

Ever wonder why we vote on Tuesday.  Most people including politicians don’t know since the answer is… no good reason whatsoever.  It started when we used to take a horse and buggy to the county polling station which took one full day to get there and we couldn’t leave on the Sabbath (Sunday). Hence, Tuesday was chosen. There is an organization that is trying to help us climb from one of the lowest voter turnout countries up a few rails by making it easier to vote.  Check out their site: http://www.whytuesday.org/

July 24, 2015
Dear family and friends,
Israel bound
Tomorrow we fly 6,000 miles east to Tel Aviv to visit our son, Mataan, who currently lives there and will, soon, be joining the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).  For those of you reading this message in Israel, let’s make some plans. This also means for the next two weeks, these emails will be devoid of current commentary on hot topics since I pre-write them while on vacation. But for this week, I might be a bit long winded. There is lots to talk about…
Iran Deal
To start, I am a proud and staunch progressive Democrat and I wish I could support our president with this Iran Deal, but after another week of analysis, I’m starting to lean away. There are some who feel that this is the only pathway to peace, but despite the complicated nuclear mumbo jumbo, the overall outcome could be far more simple yet far less peaceful. Iran was economically starved and socially isolated due to the sanctions. They needed this deal to ease their wallets and gain global status. Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader, strongly believes in the destruction of Israel and death to her BFF, America. As he approved the deal he also continued his commitment and passions to wipe Israel from the face of the earth. This is not rhetoric but their true intent. With this deal, if he abides by it, Iran will be prevented from obtaining a Nuclear Bomb for the next 15 years in exchange for billions of dollars and international acceptance with sanctions relief. After 15 years, there is no mechanism in the deal to prevent an Iranian nuclear bomb.  At that time, Iran will be wealthy and won’t need to make another deal so, unless there is a regime change, they will still hate Israel and covet her destruction.  Within the 15 years and as they acquire their wealth and prestige, they will continue to strengthen their support of dear friendsHamas, Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad, Syria’s Assad and others. But not Daesh (self proclaimed Islamic State). They hate each other.  They compete on opposite teams. Iran is Shia and Daesh is Sunni.  Another factor is that most Israelis on the wide political spectrum (even the far left) are concerned with the agreement. The reason is that the deal is silent on Iran’s proxy terrorism which is aimed squarely at the Israeli population. Before the deal, Iran had less money to spend on terrorism, but after the deal, their bank accounts will increase and their efforts to strengthen Israel’s backyard foes, Hamas and Hezbollah will swell.  It’s not only about the potential bomb in the future, its also about today’s ordinary Israeli life and the increased terrorism that will exist due to a financially flush Iran.  Even the Administration accepts this fact as they are promising added military aid to strengthen Israel’s defense. Thanks, but how about diminishing the capability of their aggressors. The 60 day Congress count is on and after they vote, the Iranian Parliament is suppose to weigh in on their opinion as they too have the right to reject the deal, but most believe they got the sweeter end so a rejection on their side is unlikely.
Common Sense
Our neighbor to the north, Canada sees the true colors of the Iran Dear and plans to keep their sanctions tough and strong. Canada is torn between two good friends yet is clearly leaning toward her falafel favorite. But just because Canada doesn’t agree with the deal doesn’t mean we’ll abandon our friendship, just as those on both sides of this deal should continue to stick together on the wellbeing of Israel and other common concerns.
Fear of Destruction

This Sunday, July 26th, is our Jewish observance of Tisha B’Av. It is a Fast Day (no food or drink) that commemorates the destruction of our 1st and 2nd Temples which occurred about 656 years apart but coincidentally on the same Hebrew calendar date of Tisha (9th) day of the month of Av. As the Iran Deal is debated, some feel history could repeat itself with another attempted destruction of our “Temple” Israel but just as we’ve survived all past attempts we, too, will survive this one with continued hope (Tikvah) for Peace and security.

Destruction of a Soul
A combination of Mental Illness, Drugs/Alcohol, Islamic Martyrdom Brainwashing, hatred of the US and automatic weapon accessibility seems to be the cause and effect for the recent murder of 5 military men in Chattanooga last week. The terrorist killer chose his targets carefully which represented his “home” country and his disapproval of the war we are fighting. The victims were brave soldiers who risked their lives to protect us. Many had been on numerous tours of duty, many had received awards and Purple Hearts.  They were sons, brothers, husbands and friends whose lives were senselessly cut short.

Brute Force
It seems everyday an innocent person loses their life due to a deadly police encounter. The most recent are Sandra Blandwho was found dead in her cell after a traffic arrest and Samuel Dubose who was shot on a Cincinnati street corner. They are added to a very long list of police brutality victims. But the one that boiled my blood is 17 year old Michiganer, Deven Guilford, who flashed his lights to indicate to the driver approaching him that his brights were on.  That driver was a police officer and for the 3rd time that night he pulled over another driver who thought his lights were too bright.  But this time it ended in Deven’s death by 7 gunshot wound and no punishment for the police officer.  Warning, this video is frustrating to watch but it is a call to action:
Police officers, Firefighters and all civil servants are due appreciation and respect and most are good and decent people, but when bad apples kill and brute force dominates the public perception of the police, something must change. With videos everywhere, we are aware of abuses which hopefully will force more protections and training.
Kids in poverty
The Annie E. Casey Foundation released its survey of Children in poverty this week and sadly the percentages increased between 2008 and 2013.  Remember, 2008 was our “great recession” and five years later should have produced more optimistic results for our poorest Americans. 22% or 16 million kids in 2013 lived in poverty. Though stats aren’t available for 2015 when our unemployment rate is down to 5.3 from 2013’s rate of 7.5, assumptions are hopeful that kids, today, are a bit better off. Mississippi had the highest rate at 34% while Alaska and North Dakota shared the lowest rate at 12%. We, in Michigan, were a bit above the average at 24%.  Kudos to Michigan League for Public Policy and Gilda Jacobs on their efforts to combat Michigan’s poverty problem. Here is the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s interactive website on this topic:
New Friendship
After 5 decades, our Cuban Embassy in the US and ourAmerican Embassy in Cuba are back in business. The Diplomatic Therapy sessions guided by Pope Francis worked and hopes for a future prosperous relationship is on track. The Cuban flag was raised on Monday in DC and the US flag will be raised in Havana next month when John Kerry drops in for a visit. Issues that still need to be resolved are the Trade Embargo and Gitmo but Congress will need to provide their 2 cents.
Detroit Art World
An exciting Art Space is moving from Brooklyn, NY to Detroit, MI.  Their loss; our gain. Galapagos, a performance and cultural space that’s livened the city of Brooklyn for the past 20 years has chosen to move the whole kit and caboodle to Detroit. Why not… we have a great revitalization going on and warehouse space is cheap.  http://www.galapagosdetroit.com/

Amy and Chuck are 2nd cousins once removed.  Of course I’m talking about the Schumers.  We saw Amy’s movieTrainwreck last weekend and experienced some wonderfully intense belly laughs and of course Chuck will be at our home Aug. 18th (my shameless plug for you to attend the fundraiser). This will be a great opportunity to hear firsthand about the Iran Deal Senate debate   Here is an interesting lightning round interview with the Senator.

Theodore Bikel z”l
Rest in peace multi-talented, award-winning singer, actor and human rights activist, Theodore Bikel (age 91). His credits include originating the broadway role of Captain Von Trapp in the Sound of Music and for portraying Tevye in Fiddler more than 2,000 times. He was one of the Newport Folk Festivalfounders and continued his social, political and Jewish activism throughout his life. His beginnings started on a Kibbutz in the pre-Israel era of 1924 which led him to perform at Tel Aviv’s premier theater, Habima in 1943.  We had the great pleasure of meeting him and being awed by his musical talents last month when he sang with Peter Yarrow and David Broza at a NYC event. I found this video of him as a young (handsome, I might add) man singing a beautiful folk song, “My Side of the Mountain”.

Dear family and friends,
Accept or Reject?
The long awaited, negotiated Iran Deal is now in the hands of our Congress for the next 60 days to inspect, reject or accept. Bibi has already rejected this agreement though he, most likely, would have rejected any agreement.  The Iranian Leadership is downright evil and hell-bent on Israel’s destruction. Their trustworthiness is void of respect and any promises they make must be accepted with a grain of salt. So, how do we deal with a nation like Iran?  Six countries, with negotiators far more astute and informed on the situation, than any of us, crafted this diplomatic deal. AIPAC, Saudi Arabia, Lindsey Graham (and a growing list) all agree with Israel that this could be a Big Mistake.  But the Big Question is, will this arrangement prevent Iran (within the next decade) from concocting that Nuclear Bomb?  Would No Deal and continued sanctions halt Iran’s Nuclear ambitions? With or without a deal, will Iran continue to dabble and deal in Terrorism.  No one has a Crystal Ball but either way Iran will continue to require close scrutiny on all of their nefarious global activities. Another important questions is what will it do to our American Jewish Community who loves Israel and for the sake of Israel must continue efforts and allegiances in both our Democratic and Republican Parties. We can not let this wedge us even further apart than we already are. We are one Peoplehood who must agree to disagree yet respect each other’s opinions.
One Nation
Speaking of Oneness, We are also one Nation that should not be superseded by rogue cities, counties or states creating contradictory laws that divide us. Sanctuary Cities that protect illegal immigrants, rogue county clerks who prevent gay marriage licenses should abide by our Federal Laws as without laws we would live in chaos. 200 cities, counties and two states (Rhode Island and North Dakota) are Safe Havens/Sanctuary Cities for criminal illegal aliens. Sadly, a young woman was killed this month in San Fransisco by a illegal criminal immigrant who sought protection in SF from deportation.  Fixing our immigration policy is of vital interest to the wellbeing of our country (but not with any of Trump’s ideas).  We need to be more welcoming, forgiving, accepting of the hundreds of thousands of immigrants who could contribute greatly to our society. We are a nation built on immigrants and it’s time we remember our origins and adjust our close minded xenophobic actions.
License to Parent
We need a license to drive a car. We should be required to obtain a parenting license to learn the humane skills of raising children. It is absurd that basic parenting (the most important job) isn’t taught in school.  No one knows what goes on behind closed doors, but children should always take precedent in a squabbling divorce situation. The kids in last week’s high profile case are now at Camp Tamarack and the parents and Judge should take this time to get their Sh*t together.
Hero to Racist
Are we the same person at age 20, 40, 60 or 80?  We all evolve, change attitudes and beliefs, and leave this world very different than we arrive.  We hope to improve as we age yetAtticus Finch seems to have degenerated (in old age) from an idolized defender of race to a possible racist himself. His older self was created by Harper Lee prior to his more famous, beloved earlier image. His older persona was hidden away for decades but now that it is illuminated, can we glean knowledge from this older Atticus about ourselves and our society?
Bravo and BS
Bravo to President Obama‘s humane act of commuting the sentences of 46 nonviolent drug offenders (one was from Michigan) this month (bringing the total to 89) as their punishments didn’t fit their crime. Each received a letter encouraging them to make the best of this 2nd chance. This week he became the first sitting president to visit a federal prison to see first hand the reforms that are needed.
The above story compares to the BS by Gov. Schwarzenegger (last minutes in office) when he pardoned a convicted murderer because he was the son of a friend and supporter. http://www.cnn.com/2015/07/07/us/arnold-schwarzenegger-clemency/
BS to the paranoid Texas citizens who thinks our military training exercise Jade Helm 15 (taking place around the country) is a federal conspiracy take-over attack.
Bravo to this year’s Wimbledon winners Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic but the real awe goes to this Wimbledon Wheelchair Athlete for this incredible rally:
Bravo and “big deal” to our Michigan House as they agreed on Michigan Ice Cream month but BS on their stubbornness to find a vital solution to our disastrous roads.
Bravo to the Semi-colon Campaign which brings awareness to mental illness and suicide. A serious issue which is in need of greater understanding and financial support in helping to find treatments and cures.
Also for their extraordinary efforts on this issue,
Bravo to dear friends, Diane Orley for her and her family’s appearance in this film:
And to Liz Guz in appearing in the film “Transforming loss” and establishing her Ella Designs Jewelry with proceeds benefiting Mental Health. http://www.elladesignsjewelry.com/
Bravo to Malala Yousafzai for celebrating her 18th birthday by opening a girls school for Syrian refugees in Lebanon.
Bravo to the creator of this simple video. As an addendum to last week’s mention of “Dr. Huxtable’s” misguided understanding of Consent.  Here is a brilliant analogy that every Human should watch and share that simplifies the meaning of Consent: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGoWLWS4-kU
Bravo to all of the 2015 Emmy Nominations, especially my favorites: Amy Schumer, Jeff Daniels, Matt LeBlanc, Maggie Gyllenhaal, This Week Tonight with John Oliver and the list goes on and on. Here is that very, very, very long list:
Bravo to New Horizons for traveling 9 1/2 years and over 3 Billion miles to capture the incredible images of our farthest “planet” Pluto. http://www.cnn.com/2015/07/15/us/nasa-new-horizons-pluto-flyby/

Dear family and friends,
Hypocrisy
When it comes to the rules of courtship, “No means No” and an affirmative “Yes” is needed for consent. These rules hold true for all, including famous “moral” hypocrites, but how do you punish a lifetime of “mickie slipping” and unconscious assaults over dozens of decades, against dozens of women. Bill Cosby will hopefully pay the price for his unconscionable actions.  We have one life and one reputation;  Appreciation and protection are due for both. Cosby’s reputation is already tumbling down as well as his statue at Disney World which was removed this week. I see more future damage to his “charmed” life down the pike.
Quds Day
The Iran Deal has (again) been postponed and this new deadline falls on Quds Day (today, Friday July 10th). What is Quds Day you ask…? It is a national holiday in Iran (established 1979) that coincides with the last Friday of Ramadan. Basicly, Quads Day is meant to unite the global Muslim community to protest against the State of Israel and proclaim their legitimate right to Palestine, in other words, the destruction of Israel. The day is “celebrated” with parades, speeches and lots of “Death to Israel” chants. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quds_Day
So, hopefully a (good) Iran Deal would eliminate their ability to liven up Quds Day.  But, if there is to be any agreement, it must include these 5 protective requirements (according to AIPAC). http://tinyurl.com/5IranDealRequirments
It does seem younger Iranians are a bit less fanatical against Israel than their elders, but only time will tell if or when Iran will ease up on their hatred. For now, they must be kept clear of any nuclear weapons.

Backward Coalition

One step forward, two steps back…Israel has returned power to the Ultra-religious party (again) as (two months ago) the current government’s coalition formed and “reformed” religious decisions like conversions (who is a Jew) and divorces back to shtetl era. Under the (ultra-religious) Shas Party, only strict conversions will be accepted which affects 350,000 “religion-less” Russian Israelis and most Reform and Conservative (converted) Diaspora Jews. And divorce proceeding under Shas has a reputation of being discriminatory against women.  Two more concerning issues of this religious coalition is the ultra orthodox educational system which barely teaches core curriculum (like Math and Science) and military or national service to the country. Unemployment and poverty are of deep concern for this community.  Progress was being made to integrate the ultra orthodox into the Israeli society but this movement will now be curtailed. Though here is an example of progress that was made to help employ some of these men in the high-tech industry.  I hope it continues:
World Cup
Congrats to the US Women’s Soccer team for winning their 3rd World Cup.  If you live in NYC, you can attend today’s Ticker-Tape Parade to celebrate the champs.
Every Girl
Bravo to the Girl Scouts of Western Washington.  Good deeds do get recognized as a $100,000 returned donation morphed into a $300,000 crowd-raised reward. The first 6-figure gift was returned to the donor after stipulations were demanded that the funds were never to benefit transgender girl scouts. Trying to replace the money by crowd-funding proved 3 times as successful once their story and policy was revealed that “Girl Scouts is for Every Girl”.  Wish the Boy Scouts would take note of this inclusive montra and join the 21st century, though they are making slow progress.
About Time
Bravo to the legislators and Governor of South Carolina as they quickly debated and agreed to remove the confederate flagtoday at 10am. The flag was absent following the Civil War but was hoisted back up in 1961 for the war’s centennial anniversary.   Rather than taking it down, South Carolinians kept it flying as a protest against the Civil Rights Movement. Its removal today does represent a step in the right direction however equal civil rights are still being denied to many within our society.
Poor Judgement
The local Gorcycas reputations are shot. Judge Lisa and her husband (former Oakland County prosecutor) David, have proven themselves to be insensitive to the wellbeing of our county’s children.  Both have now removed innocent children from loving parents.  The latest case concerns Judge Lisa Gorcyca as she placed three siblings in juvenile detention (till they are 18) because they refused to see their father whom they witnessed abusing their mother. Now the kids ages (9,10 and 14) are separated from each other and their mother.  This is how Judge Gorcyca is teaching the kids a lesson for disobeying her ruling even after the kids tried to explain why they don’t want to see their dad. She needs to be removed from the bench and given training on how to act Humane.
Good-bye Forever
Sentencing this week takes place for local Dr. Farid Fata for his money scheming method of overtreating patients with cancer and lying and prescribing chemotherapy treatment to many others who didn’t even have cancer.  This man is despicable and unremorseful of his actions and deserves life without parole.
Condolences
RIP Beekeeper, hippy and founder of Burt’s Bee, Burt Shavitz(age 80).  Through a rapid rise to fame, Burt and his business partner Roxanne Quimby built an empire that Burt rejected.  He got out early with $130,000 for his share before Clorox bought the company for nearly $1 Billion.  Roxanne did compensate Burt a few million in the end, yet Burt continue to live the hippy lifestyle and shoned the wealth road.
RIP Jerry Weintraub (age 77), music promoter (John Denver, Beach Boys, Dolly Parton, Bob Dylan) and television/movie producer (Nashville, Diner, Karate Kid, Oceans 11, 12 & 13)

The complete article is well worth the read and might just ease your next Shiva visit. http://tinyurl.com/ShivaVisit

Amy’s Short Life
The documentary about Amy Winehouse is coming out this weekend though not everyone is thrilled with the portrayal. Amy’s father, Mitch Winehouse, feels the film is inaccurate regarding their family’s depiction, so he plans to create another movie to include his view and more of her friends. Both sides would agree that her talents were immense and tragically cut short. Here is a sample of her mesmerizing voice singing a Carole King/Gerry Goffin tune, “Will you still love me tomorrow: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GuanbnnzXQ4

Dear family and friends,

Right Direction
On the eve of our Day of Liberty, we celebrate a milestone in history with the legendary Supreme Court decision equalizing the Institution of Marriage.   Though, these are celebratory days, the fight for equal rights must continue to cement All Rights for the LGBT community as currently some States and Cities still allow (meaning there are no laws preventing) Job, Housing…discrimination.  Also, Marriage Equality does Not decimate our Freedom of Religion so those concerned with Clergy being required to marry gay couples is unfounded and inflammatory.  Yes, much work is still needed to iron out the legal wrinkles and State by State implications and compliance refusals, but bravo to Justices Kennedy, Ginsburg, Breyer, Sotomayor and Kagan for weighing in on the right side of this decision.  And bravo to these companies for supporting and promoting (with creative ads) the Marriage Equality decision: http://tinyurl.com/35ProEqualityCompanies

More Decisions
Seems SCOTUS is working overtime to handle the docket of decisions before the holiday vacation.  Here are the major issues:
– Protected ObamaCare (twice)
– Equalized Marriage
– Gave Arizona voters the right to establish independent commissions to draw districts.  Michigan needs this ability to prevent/correct partisan redistricting.
– Our State of Michigan won against
the Environmental Protection Agency because the EPA didn’t consider the cost of Air Pollution regulation. Not a great decision for our air quality but good for the Michigan purse.
– Permits the use of a (subpar) Lethal Drug for Death Row injections as (“standard”) Punishment vs. Cruel and Unusual.
– Allows Texas Abortion Clinics to stay open during the appeal process that is fighting restrictive requirements.
Texas Bias
Speaking of the lovely State of Texas, the Attorney General declared that State Workers can refuse to issue Gay Marriage Licences if it offends their religious beliefs.  This is idiotic and illegal as (last checked) Texas is still part of the US and must abide by Federal Law. Louisiana and Mississippi have also followed suit with their bias.
Global Economy
Greece owes (and can’t pay) 1.6 Billion Euros to the International Monetary Fund (but her full debt is 323 Billion Euros).  Puerto Rico is in debt to the tune of $72 Billion. Hopefully bailout plans and restructuring will help ease the financial crisis of both countries so our global economy can continue to grow and prosper.
Global Terror
3 major terrorist attacks occurred last week. 38 people were killed on a beach in Tunisia.  In Southern France, a victim was decapitated and 27 people will killed in a Kuwait Mosque.Daesh (self-named Islamic State) continues to be emboldened to inspire global evil terror. How do we fight this lopsided war.  Feels like we are using a squirtgun to combat a forest fire. How can we get the brainwashing of hate to stop?
Brave Act
Though it was illegal, it sure was ballsy and timely.  Kudos toBree Newsome for scaling the SC State House flagpole Saturday morning to take down the confederate flag.  She was prepared to get arrested (which she was) and unfortunately the flag was quickly returned and now awaits debate and votes from the SC Congress which hopefully will fast-track its legal removal.

Needed Protection

Bravo to Jewish Senior Life for opening our region’s only Elder Abuse Shelter (based on a NYC model). Sadly, elder abuse is rampant throughout this country and the majority of the abusers (90%) are family members. For more info on our new Elder Abuse Center, please call (248) 661-0123
Potential Future
As we celebrate our Independence from Great Britain and with the state of our affairs, some believe we should rethink our separation. If that were possible, here is what the Queen would say, including 15 humourous rules (yes, I spelled that correctly), my favorites are #s 4 & 5:
We will be celebrating Independence Day in Eugene, Oregonwith our daughter, Liat and her boyfriend Andrew. Due to our travels, this Shabbat message was sent to my system midweek so if any major news happened after it was written, I will include it in next week’s email. Hope you enjoy your Holiday Weekend. Wishing you and your loved ones a Sweet and Peaceful Shabbat Shalom and Happy 4th of July!

Dear family and friends,
Again and Again
Will anything change…?  Has anything changed since Aurora’s Century Theater, Newtown’s Sandy Hook, Blacksburg’s Virginia Tech, Tucson’s Safeway (ironic) or Memphis’ Lorraine Motel? What does occur is lots of talking heads giving repeated commentary but action is needed as it speak louder than words.  Have we addressed our gun accessibility or racist concerns? Are politicians even using the right words to describe this heinous, racist, gun violent attack? What is the threshold that will change our society?  If the murder of kids, preachers and civil rights leaders isn’t a tipping point.. then what will motivate us to take action. Certainly, a courageous congress willing to do the right thing would be a good start.
In Memory
From ages 26 to 87, nine lives and souls were stolen from their family and friends due to brainwashed hatred. May their spirits and memories bring justice to this evil act to help prevent further senseless bloodshed.
Reverend Clementa Pinckney, age 41, was a State Senator and the senior pastor of Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.

Cynthia Hurd, age 54, was a dedicated library manager.
Reverend Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, age 45, was a pastor, a speech therapist and a high school sports coach.
Tywanza Sanders, age 26, was a recent graduate with a degree in Business Administration.
Ethel Lance, age 70, was a mother, a grandmother and a custodian at the church.
Susie Jackson, age 87, was the cousin of Ethel Lance and a regular member of the church.
Depayne Middleton Doctor, age 49, was a mother of four and sang in the church choir.
Reverend Daniel Simmons, age 74, received a Purple Heart from the Vietnam War.
Myra Thompson, age 59, had received her licence to the Ministry shortly before she was murdered.
12 Stars and 2 Stripes
One thing that might change, yet should have years ago, is the removal of the Confederate Flag. Southern Governors are finally jumping on the Flag Removal bandwagon only after years of debates with flag waving “Southern Pride” that has kept the racist symbol flying high to this day.  Its beyond tardy that this past evil relec be buried along with the racism it represents. Bravo to Walmart, Amazon, Sears, Ebay and others from pulling all merchandise from their sales stock with any confederate flag emblems. Shame on Florida, Mississippi, Georgia, South Carolina and Louisiana for having laws on their books protecting the confederate flag.  Bravo to California for their ban on sales or displays of the confederate flag.  For more info on this racist symbol, check out this PBS article
United Nations…at it again
Shame on the UN (as usual) for lumping Israel in with the terrorist organization Hamas when condemning last year’s Gaza War. Israel was purely defending herself (as usual) against those who want her wiped off the face of the earth. Israel has the ability to completely annihilate Gaza but took careful measures to insure that last year’s protective maneuvers would avoid casualties. They sent warning notices and fired targeted attacks strictly at the source of their rockets and terrorist. Where is the UN’s condemnation that Hamas’ Rockets were purposely situated near schools and hospitals and were aimed at Israeli citizenry?  Where is condemnation that supplies meant to help build their infrastructure was used to build terror tunnel?  If Hamas had the same powers as Israel, they won’t hesitate to annihilate the Jewish Homeland. The snowball is rolling since now, Palestinians will use this bias report to file war crimes against Israel at the Hague International Criminal Court. Israel, like every country is not perfect but the inordinate attacks on our tiny democratic Jewish homeland is constant, disproportional and despicable.
Olive Branch
Where are the eyes on Israel when she opens her borders for Ramadan (this week) allowing 90,000 Muslims (from Gaza and the West Bank) to pray on the Temple Mount.  The IDF and Israeli police secured the area so it could be a peaceful space for prayer.  Israel would want nothing more than to allow these peaceful moments to endure but why are the borders closed?  For one reason only, to keep out terrorist and suicide bombers. Those who criticize Israel’s tight security forget the senseless bloodshed (daily) of innocent men, women and children at the hands of maniacal monsters. Until they love life more than they hate us (paraphrased per Golda), then the security status quo must continue. http://www.timesofisrael.com/over-90000-at-temple-mount-on-first-friday-of-ramadan/
Deal Deadline
With the June 30th deadline creeping up on the negotiations for the Iran Nuclear Deal, the Iranian supreme leader is throwing a monkey wrench into the “agreement”. He’s announced several restriction that are potential deal breakers for many. Former well respected American adviser raise serious doubt about a future deal in this open letter to the President: http://tinyurl.com/RossOpenLetter
Shame on Chabad of Michigan

For needlessly pursuing and prolonging a property lawsuit against (smaller) Sara and Morris Tugman Bais Chabad Torah Center.  This territorial fight has been going on for too many years with too much wasted time, energy and (donor) money in lawyer fees. On May 20th our Michigan Supreme Court ruled against Chabad of Michigan and instead of accepting that decision, they are going back again to the State Supreme Court to ask for reconsideration.  Do we really need to fight against each other when we should be united to continue our collective work of Tikkun Olam.

Shame on Ben Affleck
For trying to “White Wash” his slave-owning ancestors out of his history on the PBS documentary series Finding Your Roots.  This fact hiding attempt came to light during the Sony hacked email enlightenment.  He was the only star to request the omission and PBS jobs will be lost due to their compliance. http://tinyurl.com/AffleckAncestors
Bravo to Pope Francis…
For using his major influence to influence major concerns of our human race… poverty, hunger, human rights, equality and (his Big topic for the week) protecting our environment. He focuses on the balancing act of Need vs. Greed. Just because we Can doesn’t mean we Should.  Here are his top 10 suggestions: http://www.cnn.com/2015/06/18/world/pope-10-commandments-climate-change/ Alaska is taking the brunt of our climate change this week as temps skyrocket in our 49th State: http://www.seattletimes.com/life/travel/baked-alaska-for-visitors-as-state-swelters-in-unusual-heat/
Bravo to Samsung…
For developing this brilliant lifesaving device that will make driving on two lane roads much safer. Can’t wait till every truck can afford the install them.
Bravo to Alicia Stillman

For taking her Meningitis Vaccine fight to the CDC.  The final recommendation fell short of what is needed but efforts to protect our children will continue.

Bravo to James Taylor

On his first number one album (ever, though others have reached the Top 10), “Before This World”.

Film Recommendations
If you are up for viewing a movie this weekend, Rolling Stone Magazine announced their pick for the 7 best movies of 2015 (so far).  Top on their list and mine is the animated film Inside Out.  It is highly recommended even if you don’t have a child to take.  http://www.rollingstone.com/movies/lists/7-best-movies-of-2015-so-far-20150623
Music Recommendation
The film “Love and Mercy” about the life of Brian Wilson is on the above list and in honor of Brian’s musical contributions, please enjoy this stellar BBC cover of “God Only Knows” with Pharrell, Elton, Stevie, Brian (himself) and many others. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqLTe8h0-jo

Michael Jackson

6 years ago this week the King of Pop died at the age of 50. Whether you loved him or not, there is no debate about the talent he possessed. Here is a new and entertaining tribute of a medley of his music by a capella group Pentatonix:

James Horner
The award winning composer/conductor died in a solo plane crash at the age of 61. He was raised in a Jewish home and is survived by his wife and two daughters.  He’s associated with some of the biggest hits in hollywood like Field of Dreams, Titanic, Avatar and this Film song made popular by Linda Ronstadt and James Ingram: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkI-B2JWSZI

Please save the date of Aug. 18th if you’d like to help us support Senator Chuck Schumer on his re-election.  Please email me if you’d like to attend and I’ll give you more details.

Good luck to Lon Johnson (current Michigan Dems. Party Chair) on his bid for the congressional seat of Michigan District #1 which is all of the Upper Peninsula and the northern part of the Lower Peninsula.

Good news for ObamaCare as the Supreme Court this week upheld the tax subsidy provision for those needing help to purchase health insurance.
Michigan Congress has sent a bill to Governor Snyder to (unfortunately) eliminate the Michigan Film Incentives and shutter the Film Office by 2018. Shortsightedness has led to this poor decision as our state has benefited greatly by the film industry through the last several years.

Michigan (with the blessing our of Sec. of State) will hopefully alter our Absentee Voting Restriction to a No-Reason request for ballots.  Currently, you need a reason to vote early and absentee but making it easier will only increase our dismal voter turnout.

Bobby Jindal is the newest Republican to enter thePresidential Race.  Here is the list so far.  More depth into these candidates will follow in the months leading up to our 2016 election.  And I’m sure this list will grow even longer.

Shabbat Shalom June 26, 2015

Shabbat Shalom June 19, 2015

Shabbat Shalom
June 19, 2015
Dear family and friends,
Patriarchs of Music and Peace
The Big Apple consumed most of my week taking a bite out of my writing time so this Shabbat message will be a bit condensed. While in NYC we were grateful to witness 3 generations of Folk Singers and Peacemakers. It was a once in a lifetime experience to hear the musical blending of the legendary (91 year old) Theodore Bikel, the iconic Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul and Mary) and the brilliant David Broza. Throughout their lives and songs, they’ve brought messages of Peace and Harmony to our global community.Theodore (named after Herzl) moved to Palestine in 1938 where he started his theatrical career before moving to the States in 1954. He has portrayed Tevye more than 2,000 time and also co-founded the Newport Folk Festival with Pete Seeger and others. Peter (with Paul and Mary) marched alongside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Selma and DC. 15 years ago, Peter founded Operation Respect, to help combat bullying with a curriculum brought to schools and camps throughout this country and the world. The reason for our NYC visit was David’s Peacemaker Award given to him by the Lab/Shul for his talent, generosity and peacemaking efforts globally and specifically within Israel as evidence of his album East Jerusalem/West Jerusalem. It was a night we will treasure and remember.

Father’s Know Best
It’s time to pay tribute to the Patriarchs and “Fatherly” Heros of our Lives.  Happy Father’s Day to all Dads, Abbas, Tateh (Yiddish), Baba (Turkish), Babbo (Italian) and Vader (Dutch), hence Darth Vader (Dark Father). The first Father’s Day was established in 1910 and President Nixon made it official in 1972 though it is not a federal holiday.  There are an estimated 70 Million Fathers in our country and 200,000 of them are stay-at-home parents. Times are truly changing as traditional parenting roles are blurred and melded, though parenting today seems to becoming too intrusive.  Those “helicopters” need to start hoovering into the distance so kids can again learn experiential independence.
Lessons from our Youth
Teaching in the reverse is evident in this wonderfulCyberSeniors initiative. Youth teach seniors how to use the internet to connect with each other and their families. The results are touching, humorous and meaningful so much so a documentary is in the works to showcase this phenomenon.
Daddy’s Little Girl
Last week one of my favorite videos wasn’t working by the time it reached you so here is that sassy little dancer that should put a smile to your face.
From Generation to Generation
This is a thought-provoking video (originally from Argentina but very universal) with a twist and important message at the end.
Wishing you and your loved ones a Sweet and Peaceful Shabbat Shalom,
Lisa
I hope your summer music plans bring joy and pleasure. Here is what’s on tap for my Summer.
Bette Midler last week at Palace
Enjoy this vintage 1973 UJA telethon performance of Bette singing my favorite song, Friends. FYI, if you are short on time, she does her schtick in the beginning and starts singing halfway through the youtube.
David Broza/Peter Yarrow/Theodore Bikel
this week at the City Winery in NYC
Here is a snippet of their performance with the talented youngAli Paris on a beautiful instrument that I don’t know the name of.  Ali is a friend of David’s who grew up in Ramallah.
Lee Reit this past week
at the Rockwood Music Hall in NYC
Local singer/songwriter, Lee Reit, is the son of friends, Sandi and Claude Reitelman and is immensely talented.  Here is one of my favorite songs:
Billy Joel at Madison Square Garden Aug. 20th
Can’t wait for this concert as I’ve wanted to go ever since he announced the monthly gigs.  The song, James, isn’t as well known as his others hits but truly enjoyable:
Graham Nash
back at the City Winery in NYC on Aug. 23rd
I love the whole album “Songs for Beginners” and here is a great tune, Sleep Song, from that list of hits:
Earth Wind & Fire with Chicago on Aug. 26th
at Pine Knob (Yes, I still call it that)
Here is a medley of songs from these two legendary groups from earlier this year on the Fallon show:
Condolences to the Nemer Family on the passing of Ilene Nemer z”l, mother to Larry and Rosalind Nemer, Ellen and David Maiseloff and the late Patti Nemer z”l. May Ilene’s memory and love be a blessing onto her family during their time of mourning.
Condolences to the family and friends of the nine innocent souls gunned down in Charlotte, NC by a hate filled racist bigot with easy access to a firearms.  May the memories and spirit of those victims rise and reflect the need to bring love and understanding to misguided and brainwashed individuals.

The good, the bad and the ugly are coming out in droves to play in the political arena.  There are now officially 12 Republican candidates and 15 Democratic candidates in the race. As the campaign heats up, more political discussion will be included in these Shabbat messages, but for now, we are all absorbing the humor and absurdity of the newest entry, and, apparently, his hair is real and attached.

And with more time next week, I will expand on Pope Francis’s efforts and initiatives to help save our planet…

Loving v. Virginia 6/12/67
June 12, 2015
Dear family and friends,
Heroes of Love
All people deserve to be in a loving relationship and those who judge, discriminate and take action to prevent marriage equality should get off their high horses and take a hike.  Israel doesn’t judge…in fact, this week it will embark on its 10th annual Tel Aviv/Jaffa Gay Pride Week attracting 100,000 participants. Gender Acceptance is this year’s theme so not surprisingly, they have invited Caitlin Jenner to attend.  They are waiting for her response. The Tel Aviv beach and surrounding buildings are rainbow decorated with open arms to all.
US Embassy in Tel Aviv ready for Gay Pride Week
(thanks for the photo, Julie Fisher)

Heroes of Truth
During the Caitlin Jenner media frenzy, one man posted a WWII photo to counter what he thought heroism really meant. He then went on a quest to find the photographer of his hero photo and discovered a sad but compelling story.  The photo was of one scene (of many) of a miniature recreation which is the passion of the photographer who started his photographic journey after being severely beaten because he is a cross-dresser.  I know it’s a complicated ironic story but it is fascinating to see the circle of incidents surrounding true bravery.  A documentary is in the works of the photographer, Mark Hogancamp .
Heroes of Jerusalem
Jerusalem has been (for millennia) and will always be the Heart, Soul and Capital of the Jewish People and the State of Israel.  It is a sacred city shared by Jews, Christians and Muslims.  One day, Jerusalem and Israel will be at Peace but for now the territory is in dispute… even on our US shores. On Monday the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the White House to prevent the Congress from requiring the State Department from printing Israel on US Passports for Americans born in Jerusalem, such as Menachem Binyamin Zivotofsky who was born there (to Americans) in 2002 and his parents want his US passport to state Israel as his Place of Birth, instead of Jerusalem, which is protocol.  Even though Israel was legally partitioned by the UN in 1947 and West Jerusalem has been officially part of Israel since the 1948 establishment of the State, (the old city of) East Jerusalem was still off limits to Jews till 20 years later (during the Six-Day War*) when the Israel Defense Force captured theCity of Gold and opened it up to all religions. Fact: Jerusalem is not Occupied Territory. Israel officially declared Jerusalem its capital in 1950 but only (to this day) Guatemala and El Salvador accept this fact.  Normally, in wars, when countries capture territory, they get to declare it theirs. When others (throughout history) conquered Jerusalem, many people (including Jews) were prevented from access yet when Israel controls the territory, all are free to pray and visit, yet despite these freedoms, the world still discriminates against Israel. Honestly, Constitutional Law is a foreign language to me so I truly can’t criticizes the decision other than to say that our Government (and the rest of the world) should respect and acknowledge Israel’s choice of her capital.
Jerusalem of Gold
Heroes of Children
Tides against Israel are strong and rampant. Anti-semitism/Anti-Israel is constant.  Many forget that nearly 1 Million Jews from Arab Countries were kicked out of their homes during the 1950s. Numerous entities continue to add their names to the BDS movement and this week enemies tried to force the UN to add Israel to the list of Children’s Rights Violators. Thankfully, Israel supporters lobbied to prevent this unfair acquisition about last summer’s Gaza War where Hamas used children and schools as their war shields just so they can accuse Israel of violations. Of course, Hamas should be on the list but they too were “excused”.
Non-Hero
After 12 years of increased authoritarian steps, the voters of Turkey sent a message to their ruling Islamist leader, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, that his behavior is unacceptable.  This is certainly good news for the region and the Turks.  To give you a taste of this despicable man, he’s blamed many woes of his country on the Armenian Lobby,  the Jewish Diaspora, Atheist and homosexuals and attempted to block all social media to his citizens . There will be no love-lost if this leader leaves. A coalition government must be formed in the next 45 days or elections will take place again. Good riddance…
Respectful Hero
This is guaranteed to bring you a smile.  If you like Aretha and feisty little girls, you will love this youtube. It is worth the 2 1/2 minutes to watch the whole thing and check out what she does at the end. This girl is going places…
Wishing you and your loved ones a Sweet and Peaceful Shabbat Shalom,
Lisa
 * The Six-Day War of 1967 occurred 48 years ago this week.  For more info and an eye-opening explanation of that time, please read (the brilliant) David Harris’ article:
Congrats…

…to Serena Williams for her 20th Grand Slam with this week’s French Open win, inching closer to Steffi Graf’s 22 Grand Slam record.
…to American Pharoah for his Triple Crown win making him one of only 17 horses to reach this fete, bringing his Stud Fee close to $200,000 a pop.  Want to see who would have won between Secretariat and American Pharoah?  Check out this side by side Belmont Stakes race from then and now:
… to Fun House and Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time for their Tony wins last Sunday. The very talented Kristin Chenoweth and Alan Cumming were a bit “Hit or Miss” during their hosting gig but 11 year old Sydney Lucas(Fun House) hit it out of the park:
And save the date for Saturday March 19th when Alan Cumming will perform here in Detroit for 313 Cabaret.
…to South Carolina for following Illinois’ footsteps by becoming the 2nd State to pass an anti-BDS bill. To remind you…BDS is Boycott, Divest, Sanction and it is a movement to delegitimize Israel but don’t take my word for it, listen to Alan Dershowitz explain it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTuTL8aCx6k
…to Birthright Israel for reaching its 1/2 million participant(sometime this summer) after 15 years of existence.
And for innovating their mission by including newlywed mixed marriages for the first time.
…to the Sela Charter School in Washington DC for offering an exceptional Hebrew and Israel education to this unlikely community. A movement of this type could help combat the global lies that lead to hatred of Israel and the Jewish people: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZM61trOmYpY&feature=youtu.be
Shame on…

Diane Rehm for too easily believing internet lies about Bernie Sanders’ nationality of which is fully American and not a dual citizen of Israel.
Texas for continuing to limit access to women’s health as they upheld a court order that could close dozens of women’s health and abortion clinics.
… Those responsible for the death of Kalief Browder as he took his life while behinds bars at Rikers Island while languishing in solitary confinement without a conviction and insisting on his innocence of stealing a backpack.
