Shabbat Shalom
January 1, 2016
Dear family and friends,
“Be always at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let each new year find you a better person.”
– Benjamin Franklin
El Nino Effect
Welcome to the first day of 2016. The transition from 2015-2016 was dominated by the weather phenom of El Nino which caused flooding, tornadoes, snow/rain/sleet storms and record high temps.  44 people have lost their lives to this deadly weather. Even our neighbors across the Sea are feeling the effects as Storm Frank crashes at the shores of Great Britain. Wishing for calmer weather (in all aspects of our lives) in 2106.
Daesh vs. Israel
This week, ISIS/Daesh has officially (in Hebrew and English) declared their intended decimation of our Jewish Homeland and pleaded for Muslims to join the “movement”. Concerning their attack against Israel, they need to get in line as this isn’t the first threat against us. Even, many in the European community won’t bat an eye at this rhetoric since some, like theSwedish Foreign Minister, the Dutch Socialist Party leader, theGerman mayor of Jena and a Greek Parliamentarian think Israel is to blame for the world’s woes. Contrary to their threat against Israel, a German journalist (crazy as it seems) was embedded (and came out alive) deep in ISIS territory and learned one obvious fact. ISIS/Daesh think they can conquer all armies (including the US) accept the IDF.  The only army they fear is Israel’s. http://www.haaretz.com/middle-east-news/1.694247
And for some leveity about their attempt to get all Muslims to join their forces, check out the humorous Muslim tweets in response http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/isis-call-muslims-overthrow-israel-7090709
Progressives vs. Pro-Israel
Switching gears…we did not attend this year’s White House Hanukah party, but we did hear the concerns and misunderstanding about the woman rabbi who helped light the Hanukiyah (Hanukah Menorah).  Some called her anti-Israel because of her progressive stance. With aggressive campaigning by pro-palestinian activist to world liberals, it seems, the larger progressive movement is trending toward Palestinian sympathy.  Rabbi Susan Talve is from St. Louis and became involved with the Black Lives Mattermovement early on since her city was at the heart of the violence.  But Rabbi Talve is also pro-Israel and an AIPAC supporter.  When the BDS pro-Palestinian movement courted Black Lives Matter to their “side”, many Jews supporting BLM were targeted as outcasts.  This whole argument about being progressive And supportive of Israel is coming to a head as the BDS movement continues to push its lie and portray Israel as an Apartheid state. “Yes Virginia”, you can be both progressive and pro-Israel:
But apparently the progressive feminist movement has “drunk” (yes, using that word purposely) the anti-Israel koolaid.  It doesn’t really matter to them that Israel is the most gender equal society in the Middle East and their women’s rights are equivalent to (or exceed) all western societies.  The largest feminist academic organization has joined the BDS movement.“Sorry Virginia”, your people have spoken:
Overdue Compensation
Onto to some (relatively) good news.  Finally the 52 victims (or their families) of the Iranian Hostage Crisis will be compensated for their 444 days in captivity. They are to receive $10,000 for each day which adds up to $4.4 million.
37 hostages are still alive and the families of the deceased victims will receive $600,000. Also, making amends (sort of) is the Japanese government to the South Korean women who were forced to become sex slaves for their Japanese soldiers during WWII. A fund of 1 Billion Yen ($8.3 Million) will be set up for the victims.  An estimated 200,000 women were forced to be “Comfort Women”.  Only a few dozen are still alive but for them, the issue of admitting guilt, apologizing and teaching the truth in history books is more of a concern than the money.
Honorable Mentions
– Bravo to the Pontif and the Catholic Church on its stance against converting Jews. http://time.com/4145056/vactican-catholics-jews-convert/
– Happy 90th anniversary for Radio City Rockettes
– Bravo to the exceptional performance by Aretha in tribute toCarole King at the Kennedy Center.
– Welcome to the 20 new Gentoo penguins who arrived to our Detroit Zoo via FedEx. In April they will move to our new Polk Penguin Conservation Center (largest and most state-of-the-art in the world).
– Bravo on the new law banning plastic microbeads, which pollute our waterways.
Dishonorable Mention
The despicable Dallas teen and his mother who fled the country after the teen broke his probation is the most perturbing news of the week.  But why was the teen on probation…because at age 16 he drunkenly drove and killed 4 people for which he only got probation based on his BS defense of “affluenza” (the irresponsibility of actions due to affluence).  Mom and son hauled their butts down to Mexico and the mom was forced to return but the son is still south of the border. Hopefully both will see some court time/jail time soon. And speaking of court, finally, Bill Cosby will have his time in the hot seat to answer for the decades of assault accusations.

My music selection for this week is a holiday-themed duet by dear friends (of each other, not me) Zooey Deschanel andJoseph Gordon-Levitt, entitled “What are you doing New Year’s Eve?”. It was originally a Nancy Wilson song and these BFFs enlighten the song with beautiful harmony.
By the way, Ella Fitzgerald, Rod Stewart and Harry Connick, Jr. all covered this song if you’d like to hear other redititions.

Peace on Earth
December 25, 2015
Dear family and friends,
“Peace cannot be kept by force;
it can only be achieved by understanding.”
~ Albert Einstein –
Peace
May this holiday season and our new year of 2016 be blessed with more Understanding, Cooperation and Kindness. We need less Hatred, Bigotry, Greed which are all evil forces that bring about war, bloodshed and sorrow…unless of course, The Force is of Light and Goodness like the Jedis possess. Yes, we saw Star Wars last weekend and it brought back memories of the original 1977 film (episode IV, A New Hope). The mysteries and connections of this new episode (VII, The Force Awakens) keep you thinking till the very end when Rey’s father is foreshadowed. The film will break all box office records as the franchise is a goldmine for new owners, Disney.
Security
Helping to end destructive rhetoric needs more voices like (US Attorney for Eastern District of Michigan) Barb McQuade. Bravo to her Free Press opinion on how anti-Muslim speech is threatening our National Security and is immoral, bigoted and damaging. Wise words according to Barb…“when it comes to national security, united we stand, divided we fall”
Freedom
Fear and ignorance fuels divisiveness and the country ofBrunei is feeding right into these irrational fears with their ban on Christmas.  Remember when the Sultan of Brunei was the richest man in the world, well now he’s only the 4th richest Royal in the world and with oil values declining, so too is he wealth.  But this hasn’t stopped him from declaring Christmas songs and decorations damaging to the Muslim faith.  About 32% of Brunei (pop. 429,000) is non-Muslim, yet obviously religious freedom is vacant in the country.
Hope
After 5 years of a bloody civil war and 100s of 1,000s of displaced refugees, the world and the UN have finally decided to help resolve the conflict in Syria with a joint resolution orchestrated by US and Russian efforts. There are too many cooks in this kitchen between Russia, US, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Assad himself for any easy accord to occur, but more power to the forces to help get this trainwreck off its disastrous track.
Holiday
The UN is housed in New York City where various religious holidays are widely observed; where all school are closed on Good Friday, Eid al-Adha, Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur . But for the 70 years of the UN’s existence, Christian and Muslim holidays were recognized on their calendar but they have never acknowledged any Jewish holiday…until this week. Yom Kippur is now an official holiday at the UN with the support of 32 Ambassadors but of course there were objections. Ali Abunimah, leader of the BDS movement stated Making Yom Kippur a UN holiday to honor the genocidal ‘state’ of Israel would be sure way to increase global anti-Jewish sentiment.”   Isn’t it so sweet how he is concerned about increased anti-semitism?
Teresa
Pope Francis acknowledge the 2nd miracle to the road to Sainthood for Mother Teresa. In 1979 she received the Nobel Peace Prize for all her work with the impoverished.  If all goes well, she will be canonized Sept. 2016. She was a role model while living and as a Saint, she will continue to inspire good deeds to all.

Jerry
Jerry Seinfeld performed 4 sold-out shows in Israel this week to 44,000 lucky ticket holders. His aspiration to become a comedian was ignited when volunteering on a Kibbutz in 1971. His 90 minute show was well received as a good time was had by all in attendance.
NYC
We are headed to NYC midweek so this email was sent to the system Wednesday evening.  Any big news that may have happened after that will be included in next week’s email. As you read this, we’ll have attended David Broza‘s annual 92nd Street Y “Not exactly Christmas Eve” concert. Also, we plan to see the Play of the Century, Hamilton, (on Sunday) but there is another play creating chatter. A revival of Fiddler on the Roof opened recently to rave reviews and references to current events. Fun Fiddler Facts: Bette Midler made her early Broadway appearance as Tzeitel in the original 1968 production.  Bette is also quoted below in this week’s political section.
Hunks
And for Christmas Day, here’s a fun Seasonal video with dancing Hunks and (various) Holiday greetings. Enjoy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Er5c_YHRb-8
Classics
And this last holiday gift comes from Paul and Ringo with their announcement that as of Midnight Dec. 24th, all Beatles tunes will be available on streaming services like Spotify, Rhapsody and Google. “Come Together, right now, over me”http://tinyurl.com/StreamBeatlesDec-24
Music
I’ve always loved this holiday classic tune made famous originally by José Feliciano (who we once saw perform on a Kibbutz stage in the 80s). This rendition has a unique and creative spin and seems appropriate for today.
Wishing you a Sweet and Peaceful
Shabbat Shalom,

We are down to 12 GOP candidates as Lindsey Grahamsuspended his campaign this week.  Aside from Pataki who is at 0% polling status, Graham was the only “viable” Repub. contender who believed that our climate change was real and manmade.

Shabbat Shalom
December 18, 2015
Dear family and friends,
Happy 100th
The first half of my week was spent in The Big Apple.  While Hannan sat in JDC (American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee) board meetings as they expressed appreciation to outgoing president, Penny Blumenstein, I explored the city in 60 degree temps. And when in New York, you can’t help but think about Old Blue Eyes and pay tribute to (what would have been) Francis Albert “Frank” Sinatra‘s 100th birthday on Dec. 12th (though he was born in Hoboken, NJ). Though he had a storied history, his Good (overwhelmingly) outweighed his Bad.  He was a staunch supporter of racial equality and spoke up clearly and angrily when exposed to racist or anti-semitic language.  He was a loyal and generous friend and his talents were legendary.  Take a listen, “Strangers in the Night”
On the other side of the ocean, one week later during that same year, another powerhouse performer was born. The compact dynamo of Edith Piaf arrived in Paris and she too would have celebrated her 100th birthday this week.  Here are the vocal talents of her musical soul:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rzeLynj1GYM
3 Years
The above commemorations are celebrated but 3 years ago this week we continue to mourn the loss of 20 children and 6 educators from Sandy Hook.  And what sensible gun regulations have materialized since this tragedy…None! Legislative prayers and tributes do nothing to ease our senseless epidemic of gun violence.  555 children (under the age of 12) have lost their lives from a bullet in the past 3 years.  And our biggest problem with easy access to firearms is Suicide.  64% of all gunshot deaths are suicide.  This alone should snap us into action, as we could easily cut down that statistic with sensible regulations.http://tinyurl.com/RestrictGunsRestrictSuicide
We must crush the NRA’s stranglehold on our legislators by voting in politicians who won’t bow to their pressure. For example, it’s absurd that we have (NRA supported) laws forbidding doctors from having a gun related conversation with their patients. There are several organizations and people (like Gabby Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly, The Bradys and many others) trying to make an impact on this issue.  Here is info on the Sandy Hook Promise:
Numbers by Neil degrasse Tyson,
did you know…
1.4 Million Americans died in all Wars fought since 1776.
1.4 Million Americans died via household Guns since 1968

400,000 Americans died fighting in World War II.
400,000 Americans died by household Firearms since 2001

3,400 Americans died by Terrorism since 2001
3,400 Americans died by household Firearms since 5 weeks ago
The Candidates
Another GOP Circus, I mean, Debate, took place this week in (not so ironic) Sin City.  CNN (who should change their name to TrumpNN) hosted the affair with the hot topics of National Security and Foreign Policy dominating the conversation. Attacking Obama and Hillary were next on their agenda while low ranking candidates tried to vie for attention.  The current polls show Trump still leading and surging in the mid 30 range. Following Trump’s lead is Cruz, Rubio andCarson (who is tumbling) with poll numbers in the teens. Next comes Bush, Christie, Kasich, Fiorina, Paul and Huckabeein the single digits and bringing up the rear is Graham, Patakiand Santorum (who is dead last).  My belly rumbles whenever I hear Carly speak and some of the extreme views of the others are rather comical (as long as they don’t have a chance at a White House address).  But the best “candidate” message was from Will Ferrell‘s retro impersonation of W on last weekend’s SNL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NKXGA-AU50w
Muslims
It seems our neighbors to the North, led by their new (young and handsome) Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, are receiving praise for taking the righteous and humane path regarding refugees: http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/refugees-canada-arab-media-response-1.3368223  and here is (the brave and brilliant) Malala’s response to Trump’s hate speech about Muslims, which she feels will create more terrorism http://tinyurl.com/MalalaResponds
Politics and Policy
Compromise is the best tool for effective government and this week, our legislators were able to come to an agreement on aBudget Plan that will take us through the next 2 years.  The vote is Friday (after I’ve sent this email) but most likely it will pass. Thankfully, Jon Stewart‘s efforts on behalf of the 9/11 First Responders paid off as their health care will be permanently reauthorized. This is Paul Ryan‘s big assignment and its success will set the tone for Ryan’s reign. And while we are on a positive track and the economy continues to gain strength, Federal Reserve head honcho, Janet Yellen has increased the interest rate for the first time since it was dropped to Zero, 7 years ago.  The NYT’s created an interesting Rube Goldberg Machine to help explain this interconnected process.
Michigan Politics
On our local Michigan political scene, voting reform has taken a step backward with the passage to eliminate straight partyvoting while also eliminating the compromise on that Bill to include No Excuse absentee ballots. Making our voting process more complicated and harder to do always helps the GOP which is exactly who controls our Michigan Congress.
Star Wars
I must admit, I loved the 1977 Star Wars but lost interest with the sequels…till now.  Though I haven’t seen the new version, I heard kudos goes to JJ Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan for creating these new films with the integrity of the original Lucas magic.  And of course, Jimmy Fallon also created magic with this wonderful musical tribute featuring the cast including “Leah and Han” better known as Carrie and Harrison https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTLAx3VDX7g
(chewy’s also in it). May the Force be with you!
Harmony Around the World
22 hands and 11 pianos from all over the world create harmony to help instill unity among nations.  Idan Reichal of Israel orchestrated the event and drum virtuoso, Meytal Cohen, makes a rogue appearance among the ivory keys.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgBFa-7OBW8 And while on the subject of music, Mazel Tov to Itzhak Perlman, 2016 Genesis Prize (Jewish Nobel) winner for his contributions to Humanity and the State of Israel.  The Genesis Prize was established in 2014 with Michael Bloomberg receiving the first award and Michael Douglas as last year’s winner.
Christmastime
For some of you on this list who will be celebrating Christmas next week, I wish you a Sweet and Peaceful gathering with family and friends and a Merry Christmas. Hope you enjoy this creative movement to accompany the California Philharmonic’s Nutcracker classic (the full show is 9 minutes but if you don’t have time, check out the 3 minute mark):
And for friends and family who eat Chinese food on Christmas, enjoy this animated film from 2005 by SNL’s Robert Smigelfeaturing Darlene Love.  Here is
“Christmastime for Jews”
Wishing you and your family a
Peaceful Shabbat Shalom.

Lisa
Our thoughts and prayers are with Karen Siegel Propis andHazzan David Propis and their family on the passing of Karen’s mother, Ruth Cohen Siegel z”l. Ruth was a dedicated soul to many causes during her years in Boston, Puerto Rico, Atlanta and then during her last several years, here in Michigan. I had the pleasure of meeting her during the High Holidays and enjoyed hearing about her adventures. May Ruth’s memory and spirit bring comfort to those who mourn her loss and may her life be a blessing onto all she touched.

Dear family and friends,
Speak Up
These two Talmudic quotes describe the reaction to the absurd statement from the leading Republican Candidate:
“You can educate a fool, but you cannot make him think”
and
“Who can protest an injustice, but does not, is an accomplice to the act”
Trump’s outrageous remarks continue to accelerate in offensiveness as he speaks to the Id of our nation.  If you remember from your Psychology 101 class, our Id is 1/3 of our personality.  It is our unrefined instinctual (irrational) segment that gets countered by our Super Ego to form our Ego. Most who agree with Trump seem to be thinking only with their Ids or their irrational minds. How else can you explain his followers. Everyone to the right (and in their right mind) of his followers, including many in the Republican Party, are rebuking his message.  The UK has proposed a Ban (signed by over 370,000 people) to keep Trump out of their country. http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-35052505  Trump was scheduled to visit Israel next month but postponed the trip knowing this reception might not be welcomed by Israel leaders. When we witness injustice, like his remarks about banning all Muslims from the US, we all must speak up against this discrimination, or as famously stated by Pastor Martin Niemöller during WWII…who will be next?
First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out-
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out-
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me-and there was no one left to speak for me.

This photo speaks volumes…look closely.

Protection
Because we are in this Era of Global Terrorism, we need to be vigilant and proactively protective to prevent future attacks by innovating security measures, choking terrorist funding sources, building international coalitions and, yes, instituting national sensible weaponry regulations. Bravo to the Supreme Court, this week, for refusing to weigh in on the Illinois (Highland Park) law banning the sale and possession of semi-assault weapons, though of course, Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas both disagreed with this action and wanted to hear the case. Also, kudos to the Doctors and Lawyers Associations for their collective applauds to the NYTimes (first front page editorial in nearly a century) about our Gun Epidemic.
But back to our terrorism problem, the core of Human Beings (even Thomas and Scalia) is Humanity so, optimistically, Good will win over Evil but how many generations will it take before we are victorious.
Our Only Home
Another victory we must accelerate is our battle over our abusive behavior toward our only home. China this week has proven that their industrial actions have literally choked its citizens with pollutant smog so sickening it closed its society (schools, factories…) and told people to stay indoors. Their air quality index measured at 308 which equates to “Severely Polluted” (0-50 is healthy air).  Leaders in Paris are refining the global document that will decrease carbon emission and
find ways to pay for it. And speaking of the price tag, Bill Gateshas jumped into the game with his $1 billion dollar commitment to environmental Research and Development.
Heroism
Speaking of environmental contaminants, many First Responders of 9/11 heroically performed their jobs after our horrific terrorist tragedy, only later to development serious medical issues due to pollutants at Ground Zero.  But instead of being rewarded for their heroism, with (the least we can do) medical care, they have been fighting with Congress for their lives.  Jon Stewart has been their stalwart supporters as he helped passed the first (5 year limited) Zadroga Act in 2010. With simple math, you can see it expires this year and Jon is back with (less) survivors (since many have died) to get a renewal of their much needed and much deserved medical care which is being juggled by Mitch McConnell purely for political reason.  Here is Jon Stewart, back on The Daily Show, venting his warranted frustrations.
RIP
35 years ago this week (Dec. 8, 1080), John Lennon was gunned down in front of his NYC Dakota apartment as his wife, Yoko Ono, looked on in shock. His senseless murder will forever be blazoned in the minds of fans around the world yet his prolific music (of Peace) and spirit will continue to live on for generations (of fans) to come.
Tibor Rubin z”l died this week at the age of 86 after living (some would say) two heroics lives.  One during WWII as a concentration survivor and the other during the Korean war, while both were fraught with severe anti-semitism.  To read more about this amazing man, check out this NY Times article: http://tinyurl.com/TiborRubin
Happy 99th
Issur Danielovitch, also known as Kirk Douglas, turned 99 years old this week on Dec. 8th.  His birthday gift to his Hollywood community was a $15 Million donation to the Healthcare and Social Services of the Motion Picture and Television Fund.  Ever think about the phrase “Motion Picture”…That’s just what they were in 1892 when Thomas Edison invented the first Motion Picture camera.
Bravo
The Obamas honored a very worthy group of societal game-changers at Sunday’s Kennedy Center Awards including my favorites, Carole King, George Lucus, Cicely Tyson.
True humanity is demonstrated by Beth Israel Synagogue in Peterborough, Ontario when it opened its door to their Muslim neighbors after their Mosque had been destroyed by arson. May this action be a model onto the world.
Congrats to Angela Merkel for being named 2015 Time Person of the Year, though I don’t think she’d like to be in the same company as some of her runner ups, like, Trump, The Leader of Daesh (ISIS), Iran’s President Rouhani and Russia’s Vladimir Putin.
Congrats to our Detroit Zoo for being named Crain’s 2015Best Managed Nonprofit.  Kudos goes to Ron Kagan and his dedicated and passionate team who focus on animal and environmental conservation and sustainability in their daily routine. http://tinyurl.com/DetZooBestManaged
Bananas
I eat Banana Chocolate Chip cake almost everyone morning and the bad news is that my sacred bananas are under threat. 60 years ago we ate Gros Michel Bananas, a smaller sweeter version of today’s Cavendish Banana.  But a disease wiped out the Gros Michels and now our Cavendish are threatened. Remember that old song “yes, we have no bananas”.  A new specie of Banana might be in our future but if the taste continues to evolve, we may need to change our banana expectations. http://grist.org/food/good-news-bananas-arent-going-extinct-bad-news-they-are-in-trouble/

Shabbat Shalom Dec. 11, 2015

Shabbat Shalom Dec. 4, 2015

Shabbat Shalom
December 4, 2015
Dear family and friends,
Right Wing Warning
Gun Control, Birth Control and Environmental Concerns are this week’s main topics so friends whose voices are to the right of mine are, now, forewarned… though as always, my intent is to remain respectful and if your read on, you’ll see there is other non-controversial topics to enjoy, like Coffee, Wine and Bohemian Rhapsody.
Who will be next?
Sadly, mass murders in our country are now commonplace. How much more of this absurdity can we take?  We lead all other countries in mass murder (4 or more deaths) with an average of one per day.  14 innocent lives were snuffed out in this week’s attack (and 17 wounded) with easily accessible and massive amounts of firearm.  Why does ourRight to Guns outweighs our Right to Live…? Andy Borowitz wrote this “tongue-in-cheek” article last month which hit the nail on the head. We need this type of representation in Congress:
The NRA has hijacked our Congress and the 2nd Amendment: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” Just a few hours before sending this email to you, the US Senate failed to pass two amendments to expand background checks and prevent those on the Terror Watch List to buy guns. How can Senators who are suppose to represent their constituency, vote No on these protective measures. Makes no sense at all!
Even (the late) conservative Supreme Court Chief JusticeWarren Burger was offended by the NRA’s corrupt interpretation of the 2nd Amendment which is used to continue their profitable gun industry and President George H.W. Bushresigned in disgust from the NRA in 1995. If these men’s views don’t convince Congress to change their ways, how about the words of the 1934 NRA president:
Pillow Feathers gone astray
Words have the power to heal…help…create…inspire, but sadly, words also have the power to destroy.  The twisted words, lies and rhetoric coming from several soapboxes have inspired the other mass shooting of the week at the Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood clinic, wounding nine people and killing a pastor/police officer, an Iraq war vet and a mother of two. The weapon of choice was a semiautomatic rifle. Did the authors of the 2nd Amendment intend for all Americans to protect themselves with automatic weaponry…I think not. This is the 6th attack on a PP clinic since July when the heavily edited and completely deceptive anti-abortion videos began to circulate. Planned Parenthood provides vital healthcare to women and, yes legal abortions (though they are never funded with public money), yet repeatedly, our US and State legislators are constantly trying to defund the only access many Americans have to medical care. Lies and rhetoric are culprits to this witch hunt.  If legislators ever did a serious open minded investigation of Planned Parenthood’s efforts, they’d find a saviour for many in this country, but, in this day and age, lies fly through the internet and in the Media at lightning speed and create damage before they can be disputed or recanted.  It’s like the feathers of a pillow, once released, they can never be returned. Too bad a warning indicator light doesn’t activated when damaging lies come into public view. Here is an important message from Planned Parenthood:

Air, Water, Land
As Cows, Cars, Industrial Plants… continue to pollute the air we breathe, the water we drink and the land we live on,190 world’s leaders are in Paris (this week) at the COP21 (Conference of Parties 21st gathering) to help reverse these damaging trends. The first COP was held in Berlin in 1995 but what has been accomplished in the ensuing 21 years.  As the climate continues to change, the raising water levels are invading our shores and countries like the Marshall Islands are slowly disappearing.
http://tinyurl.com/ByeByeMarshall. And, if our consumption of beef isn’t curtailed, the continued effects on our planet from cattle production will lead to serious environmental deterioration not to mention our indiscriminate overfishing of our underwater habitats. These are just a few of our transgressions, but we can steer our planet in the right direction.  The tide of environmental concerns are turning and it’s great to see the efforts of Billionaires Gates, Zuckerberg and Benzos putting their billions into the game.  But world leaders in Paris need to put pen to paper to reach healthy goals for our only known home.
Voting Made Easy
Since I’m on a roll, I might as well continue my progressive rant… Here goes: Election Day should be a National Holiday. Every American should have easy access to voting. Registration should be automatic when applying for a driver’s licence, photo ID should not be required to vote, voter fraud is a mythical problem, Straight Party voting is an option that should remain, there should be no “excuse” needed when applying for an absentee ballot and Election Day should be a National Holiday.  To read more about this petition to make Nov. 8, 2016 a National Holiday, check out this article:
And bravo to Kentucky for returning the voting rights to 170,000 ex-cons, who were nonviolent and completed their prison terms.  Florida and Iowa are the last two states who still prohibit ex-cons from voting.
Coffee
I always try to bring you up-to-date health information and the benefits of coffee was one that I recently included.  So with this in mind and a shout-out to a young (and I mean school-aged) local inventor, check out this innovative (patented) cold-brew coffee process by Max Feber. Here is his Kickstarter page: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/feber/bruw-cold-brew-simplified
Wine
This is such good news for me since I like Red Wine and dislike exercise.  Turns out 1 glass of Red Wine is equivalent to a workout. Yes, the research was done on rats but that’s good enough for me.  http://idealist4ever.com/a-glass-of-red-wine-is-equivalent-to/
Breastfeeding
Not only is breastfeeding beneficial for your baby but it is also good for the mom’s body. It helps prevent breast and ovarian cancer as well as type 2 diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis. http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/11/23/breast-feeding-is-good-for-mothers-not-just-babies/?_r=1

Shabbat Shalom
November 27, 2015
Dear family and friends,
Two Feet
Though it wasn’t quite two feet, Detroiters experienced our first snowfall of the season this week. Thanks to the balmy Thanksgiving Day weather, all that snow is long gone though Michiganders always know there’s more to come. Thanks, Lisa S. (who now lives in Florida) for sharing this image with her childhood friends.
2 feet of snow
Immigration
We shouldn’t repeat the mistakes of our ancestors during WWII when, Then, the desperate immigrants were Jews and We, the US, turned our backs of them/us.  Bravo to those who are speaking up to “Do the Right Thing” (like Mayor Mike Duggan) by opening our doors to the desperate lives affected by war and terror. Applying for Immigration Status is an extremely rigorous long term process with extensive vetting by numerous agencies. Yes, we need to keep vigilant and safe but there are more effective ways than shunning a devastated population.
Disruption
The capital of Belgium and the EU, Brussels, came to a halt this week as schools, public transportation and some stores were closed due to concerns of possible terror activity. Disrupting our lives is exacting what these twisted terrorist want to do and it seems they are succeeding, through actual terror or threats of terror.  We must find a strategy to combat this deadly trajectory of evil.
Against the Odds
The Western World hates ISIS (Deash) but when it comes to the same exact tactics by Palestinian terrorist, the world goes mute. Every week (including this one) for the past several months (years, decades) Israelis have been murdered/terrorized by Palestinians while the Palestinians heroize the terrorist. Yet, something about Israeli victims warrants more leniency and evenhandedness. News media feel obligated to show both deaths as equal when stabbing victims and their perpetrators die. In addition there is a media obsession with the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. For a tiny country and region, the amount of journalist covering the conflict is much higher than anywhere else in the world. Also, out of proportion is the amount of United Nations resolutions against Israel compared to anywhere, including North Korea and Syria. This week the American Anthropological Association voted overwhelmingly (1,040 to 136) to boycott Israel. You’d think Anthropologist would know the anthropological proof of ancient Israel but they now add themselves to a long list of other bias Academic Association. Even when The Patriots (with their well respected and very pro-Israel owners) paid tribute to the death of Ezra Schwartz they never mentioned Israel or Palestinian terrorists, though they say it was completely unintentional since the wanted to focus on all terror victims.
“we also pause to remember the many of who have recently lost their lives in senseless terror attacks abroad. Last Thursday, this reality struck close to home when 18-year-old Ezra Schwartz, a native of Sharon, Massachusetts, and a huge Patriots fan, was gunned down nearly 5,500 miles from home while studying abroad. At this time, we would like to honor Ezra Schwartz, and the hundreds of victims like him, with a moment of silence.”
Sadly this bias against Israel has persisted and increased as the guilt of the Holocaust fades and the strength of Israel since the Six-Day War has changed her status from “David” to a (necessary) “Goliath”.  Then, throw in Anti-semitism and you’ve got opinions that range from Double Standard to flat out Israel hatred. Israel was the canary in the coalmine years ago forewarning the acts of radical terrorism with suicide bombings.  But the world was biasly blinded so they ignored the warning signs and now we’ve got the hatred spread to the US, France and all of Western Civilization (though they continue to kill themselves too) and many, like the (female) Swedish Foreign Minister, have the balls to blame Israel for this global catastrophe.
Other Threats
Shame on those Floridian Octogenarians for decades of gambling during their Mah Jongg games.  Good thing the Police showed up in the nick-a-time to shut down their illicit activity. http://www.timesofisrael.com/elderly-jewish-women-accused-of-illegal-gambling/
The Air We Breathe
Jeff Goldblum is the Fixer in this comedic attack of the Environmental Protection Agency for trying to keep our air clean. Goldblum saved us in Jurassic Park but can he save us now. Thank you League of Conservatin Voters for this creative message:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WaWJPx3UPY

And for more amazing talent, check out my very favorite guitar song (by Mason Williams) performed by the incredible (Australian) Tommy Emmanuel (who is playing a sold out concert at the Ann Arbor Ark in Feb.).  If you love the songClassical Gas, you will love this rendition.  Listen for hidden tunes inside the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S33tWZqXhnk
Hello
Last installment for this week’s musical choices is a huge talent and you’d be living under a rock if you haven’t heard her yet.  Enjoy Jimmy and Adele with The Roots performing on children’s instruments. Truly the best…
Wishing you and your family a

Shabbat Shalom
November 20, 2015
Dear family and friends,
When and How?
When will it end?  In this “enlightened” era of the 21st Century when illnesses are cured, tiny computers are developed, space travel is conquered…how can barbarism plague our global society.  There is more than enough blame spouted from the media, but how do we get to the root of the problem? How do we stop the hate from mutating and spreading?  How do we reach the infected minds and switch that corrupt gear that blocks the natural Humanity element? Humans are complex beings with Free Will capable of committing Horror, but how do we educate and inject humanity back into those distorted souls.
On the other hand…
As Emma says “…give us your huddled masses yearning to breathe free”, but (as Tevye says) “on the other hand”, how do we keep our own country safe, on the other hand, we too were homeless once, on the other hand, minorities of our homeless ancestors weren’t hijacked by radical terrorist, on the other hand, most Muslims aren’t terrorist, on the other hand, can we safeguard the entrance system to prevent homeland terror? Though, if Congress and Candidates really want to keep us safe, maybe, instead of limiting immigration, limiting easy access to assault weapons would be a good start.
Two Perspectives
Two of my favorite voices have chimed in on our Terrorist Era. Jeffrey Goldberg explains a list of things we do that enrage the Terrorists and David Harris explains 5 lessons we should learn from this radical Islamic terrorism.
Jeffrey:

Secrecy Remains
After 30 years of imprisonment for espionage, Jonathan Pollard will be released today, almost 30 years to the day of his capture.  Because of his safety, his movements will remain quiet with no public celebration. After his parole is completed which requires him to remain in the US, he plans to move to Israel. And even after his release, there are still many secrets unknown about his strange unprecedented lifetime sentence.  http://forward.com/news/national/324960/as-release-nears-jonathan-pollard-shuns-attention-he-once-sought/#ixzz3rnCQGfn5
Wrong Side of Humanity
After years of politically promoting anti-gay legislation and recently establishing a new anti-gay policy regarding the children of gay couples, 1800 members (with a growing list) have resigned from the Mormon Church as they continue their discriminatory agenda against the LGBT community. FYI and irrelevant to this story (but I found interesting) is that both the Jewish and Mormon population is about 14 million strong

And more good news…Drink that extra cup of coffee.  As it turns out, it good for your health. A study found that coffee drinkers outlive those who forgo those cups-a-joe. Useless Random info
We all knew it, but now that it’s in People Magazine, it is public knowledge. Warren Beatty is So Vain, as Carly Simonconfirms he “knew the song was about him”.  I love this Carly song (Not the one about Warren) and this video has vintage home movies of a very young Carly and her sisters.

Rest in Peace Jacov Litman z”l and his 18 year old son,Netanel Litman z”l who were gunned down by Palestinian terrorist in their car while injuring other family members. These frequent killings are sadly too common to warrant headline news. Also, the Red Cross/Red Crescent Ambulance near the scene “boycotted” these victim and drove past the family.
Stabbings/Killings continue
18 year-old American Ezra Schwartz z”l was one of the 5 people killed in Israel this week.  Two were stabbed in Tel Avivand 3 (one Palestinian) were killed in Gush Etzion, including Ezra, who was from Sharon, MA. Where and What is Gush Etzion…? It is a neighborhood (“some” would call Settlements) yet “when” a Two-State solution is finalized, this neighborhood will remain part of Israel.  It is directly south of (and strategically protects) Jerusalem.  The origins date back to 1920 when the land was legally purchased and in the 1940s, Jewish agriculture villages were established till they were destroyed by Arab partners in 1948. The area was rebuilt after the 6-Day war in 1967.  Ezra was in the area passing out food to Israeli soldiers when he was killed.  May his memory and spirit bring comfort to his loved one and may his life and the other victims be a blessing onto Israel.

Dear family and friends,
Fact Check
TMI, a little Too Much (quantity of) Information was included in last week’s email. Sorry to overload you but at least the info was actuate. Seems the discussion this week is the truthfulness of our presidential candidates. In this day and age, when everything can be fact-checked instantaneously, why would candidates “embellish” when their factual lives are impressive enough. Honesty is an honorable trait that deserves respect and recognition but dishonesty is the demon some wield too freely.
Health Check
Keeping with the TMI theme and my constant attempt to provide healthful information, here is a website that compliments the Squatty Potty (mentioned a few months ago) with an important chart about your “masterpieces”. Warning, avoid this website if you prefer to stay oblivious about your insides. http://www.viralnova.com/poops/?utm_content=inf_10_2454_2&mb=wh5p&ts_pid=2
Lessons Learned
The rise of hateful racist remarks (seemingly ignored) and disgusting displays (one included the source of the above paragraph smeared into a nazi symbol) plus the boycott of theU of Missouri football team, resulted in the resignation of the University President.  But more effort is needed to address our campus (and nation’s) racism problem. Hatred is taught (not innate) and we must work hard to reach our country’s crevices where it is perpetuated from generation to generation.
Sensitivity Training
Racial slurs are the unintended outcome that occurs from many sports teams. For example, Native Americans are offended by the Washington Redskins yet they refuse to change their name even after a Federal Judge cancelled the team’s trademark in July. Apparently, 2000 High Schools have similar names and now Adidas has offered to financially help any school who is willing to change their insensitive name. California schools need to get on the bandwagon since last month they banned the use of the name Redskins from any school team. http://usatodayhss.com/2015/adidas-offers-help-to-schools-that-want-to-change-native-american-team-names
Deck Stacked Against Israel
Teaching hatred to young minds is prevalent within the Palestinian culture. While their counterparts here in the US learn pleasant nursery rhymes and cheerful songs, their Palestinian peers are learning to hate and kill their “enemy”. Google, for yourself, the words Palestinian Children’s TV,Textbooks or Songs and see what pops up. Because of this curricular (and social media) brainwashing, each and every week, there are random acts of stabbings and car rammings keeping Israelis on constant guard.  The deck always seem stacked against Israel with a double standard including this week’s European Union requirement to forbid “Made in Israel” labels on all merchandise made in East Jerusalem, Golan Heights and West Bank. The new labels must state “Made in Settlements”.  This augments the BDS movement to sanction Israel while ignoring hundreds of other disputed global territories with no labeling requirements. The Israeli Ambassador to the EU explains the frustration on this BBC radio story: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p037s2lv
L’Chaim

Even with the deck stacked against her, Israel continues to rank highest on many surveys including this month’s news that she is the 6th healthiest nation according to this Bloomberg Report.  Singapore tops the list at #1 while the US dips to #33, while Swaziland brings up the rear at dead last. Here’s the full list: http://tinyurl.com/healthiestCountries

Teen Talk
Imagine if you could talk to your teenage self while you are in your 50s.  That’s exactly what Peter Emshwiller has done with this extremely creative film he started in 1977 and is completing this year.  Check out this trailer:
Fresh Irony
As a continuation of last week’s Alanis Morissette remake of her famous song, Ironic, this week’s version with James Corden tops them all with a fresh take on modern times. I think you’ll find it very entertaining.  I laughed out loud a few times. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6GVJpOmaDyU&feature=youtu.be
Support our Vets
As we commemorated Veterans Day this week, I commend and salute all soldiers who’ve fought and served to keep our homelands (yes, plural) safe.  We need to do a better job at taking care of all Veterans for the rest of their lives.  Thank you,Nancy Schlichting, for taking on the national role to improve the desperately needed health care for our Vets.
Thank you, Vets!

Shabbat Shalom Nov. 6, 2015

Shabbat Shalom
November 6, 2015
Dear family and friends,
“When I’m 64” (and beyond)
Today, Nov. 6th, marks the 6th year of my Shabbat Shalom hobby.  I plan to continue it at least “sixfold” more years (I hope that means 6×6 or 36 more years). All 6 years of these email are now being transferred to a blog so in the near future you will be able to read them at the blog site, WordPress and comment with your thoughts.  Apparently the 6th anniversary is celebrated with Iron and Candy, so feel free to shower me with Horseshoes and Hershey’s kisses…
“Oops, I did it again”
“Error” is my middle name and I made three of them (that I know of) last week.
1. Dr. Thomas Kovan z”l was Linda’s uncle.
2. I missed Rick Weinstein’s birthday on Nov. 3rd
3. Brenda Steuer’s birthday is not Oct. 30th, it is May 15th.
Triple oops to these mistakes and any others.  I fully admit my human flaws and would rather write with mistakes than miss my weekly habit.
“You’ve got to change your evil ways, baby”
While counting “flaws” or deadly judgements in error, the world should know that nearly 800 terror attacks have occurred in Israel since the Jewish New Year, only two months ago, including 4 stabbing victims this week (2 elderly people). Why do so many sit idly by or worse yet, blame Israel for this terror? There is no excuse for this behavior, no matter the politics.  Those blaming Bibi or the occupation or any injustice should educate themselves on the Truth. As I’ve always said, Israel is by no means a perfect country (there is no such thing), but she has bent over backwards in her historic attempts to make peace with the Palestinians. Completely withdrawing from Gaza, giving 99% of demands during Olso, treating Arab victims of terror and neighboring wars…and the list goes on of her Humanity.  There is absolutely no justification for Terrorism.  No modern, democratic country would stand for these attacks on their innocent citizens, not to mention the real intent (of some extremists), to obliterate the existence of the Jewish State and in some eyes the Jews too. I’m a self-proclaimed bleeding heart liberal but on this issue I differ greatly from my left kinship. The stakes are too high to ignore the facts and sit idling by…
“This land is your land, this land is my land”
This week’s elections produced an unexpected guard change in Kentuckyfrom a Dem. Governor to a very conservative Republican one, which the state hasn’t seen in 40 years. The newly elected (Tea-Party) Matt Bevin and his (Detroit born) Lieutenant Gov., Jenean Hampton, made history as Ms. Hampton became the first African-American ever to be elected to a Statewide office in Kentucky. Both Bevin and Hampton are newbies to elected office and now lead their State that used to be dominated by the Dems. The other surprising (and maddening) upset occurred in Houston, TX where the opposition to an anti-discrimination law used a scare tactic implying the law would allow sex offenders to enter women’s bathrooms. Houstonians fell for it and voted against protecting equal rights.
Thanks, Susanna, for posting this on your Facebook page.
“So kiss me and smile for me”
224 people lost their lives in the Sinai Desert plane crash as investigators are trying to determine the cause of this deadly tragedy.  Was the aircraft in poor condition or was foul play involved?  Of course, the demonic Daesh takes credit and now the UK has pulled their flights for this desert resort town. To the victims families, no answer will bring back their loved ones, but to the Russian authorities, cause might be the reason for future actions.
“But you got to have friends. The feeling’s oh so strong.”
To the dismay of US negotiators and leadership, Iran has become more hostile and emboldened after the Iranian Nuclear agreement as opposed to friendlier and more understanding. Americans continue to be arrested in Iran for espionage, Iran tested a ballistic missile a few weeks ago and this week they celebrated the (double Chai) 36th anniversary of the Iran Hostage Crisis with a rally chanting Death to America and Death to Israel as both flags were burned. Of course they try to explain that “their” meaning of “Death to America” only refers to the evil American policies certainly not the Americans.  Yes, that makes it all better.  http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-11-04/iran-marks-u-s-embassy-storming-as-deal-leaves-rivalry-intact

“I can see the red taillights headed for Spain”
“Dear passengers, we will be landing soon in Palestine.” is not how pilots should address their passengers when approaching Ben Gurion International Airport squarely situation in the land of Israel.  Not surprising this Iberian Airline pilot was removed from the Madrid/Israel route and hopefully required to go back to High School geography class.  After an investigation, Iberia Airline says it was a misunderstanding (lost in translation).  They refute that the Spanish version included Palestine as the final destination while the English version only stated Tel Aviv with no mention of Israel.
“The Candy Man Makes Everything He Bakes Satisfying & Delicious”
One company that does love Israel is the candy, Mentos. About a year ago, they started printing “I love Israel” on their Mentos packaging, but it seems only recently that social media has picked it up and figuratively thrown it into those exploding Diet Coke bottles.  As you can imagine, those who hate Israel have a campaign to boycott Mentos, which is why I’m chewing some Mentos gum right now. FYI, Mentos (the peppermint flavored caramel candy) was invented by two dutch brothers while riding a train to Poland in 1932. And Fountain Square in downtown Cincinnati holds the World Record of the most Diet Coke/Mentos explosions.  I knew you’d want to know that.
“Like a Tunnel that you follow”
Happy 85th birthday to the Detroit/Windsor Tunnel (2nd busiest US/Canada crossing) which opened for traffic Nov. 3, 1930 at the cost of $23 Million and took 26 months to build.
“Now I’ve heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord”
This beautiful Hebrew rendition by IDF singers of Leonard Cohen famous song was published exactly one year ago today and as our breakfast table is filled with two IDF soldiers (our son, Mataan, who joins Nov. 26th, and bonus son, Josh) who both will be returning to Israel in 2 weeks, this song is in their honor. http://www.israelvideonetwork.com/the-idf-produced-the-best-version-of-leonard-cohens-hallelujah-ever/

Of Blessed Memory…
Though I didn’t know her, she raised a wonderful son who created a beautiful family with his wife.  Condolences to Keenan and Orna Wolens on the passing of Keenan’s beloved mother, Maliette Wolens z”l.  Survival and determination describes the life of Maliette as she lost many family members to the Holocaust while she and her family were on the run till they landed in Mexico City.  She later settled in Dallas and raised her family as a dedicated member of the Jewish Community. She lived each day to the fullest as she preferred flowers sent to her while alive and not to her funeral. As stated in her obit, “In lieu of memorials, please send flowers to someone you love.”  Sending love, hugs and these flowers to Keenan, Orna, Alana, Ethan, Sophie and Raquel.

Because of CNBC’s “gotcha” questions, the GOP candidates severed ties to the future NBC/Telemundo debate.  Yes, maybe the questions were stupid but quite frankly if candidates can’t retort a stupid question than maybe they can’t handle the hot seat of the presidency.

Shabbat Shalom Nov. 6, 2015

Shabbat Shalom October 30, 2015

Shabbat Shalom
October 30, 2015
Dear family and friends,
This Weekend
Halloween is the ancient Celtic holiday that marks the end of the harvest season and the start of Winter.  I sure hope Winter doesn’t commence anytime soon as we (in Michigan) have been experiencing a glorious Fall that needs to stick around for a few more weeks.  The Celts also believed the seasonal transition period opened up a bridge to the Dead, hence the spooky atmosphere. Though it started out as a pagan then Christian holiday, it’s morphed into a secular neighborly fun day for kids. And speaking of this weekend, don’t forget to turn your clocks back an hour Sunday morning asDaylight Saving Time ends and we Fall Back to Standard Time.  Arizona and Hawaii don’t follow Daylight Saving time and quite frankly, it is an antiquated system, and for some, it causes physical ailments and should be abandoned.
For all the young families, like Ariella and Tzvi.
Shalom Chaver
On November 4, 1995 (20 years ago this week), a war hero turned peacemaker was gunned down for his latter efforts.  Prime MinisterYitzhak Rabin was killed by a radical extremist who believed murder was the route to “saving” the Jewish State. As we’ve witnessed our whole existence, violence is only the route to evil outcomes and relegated to our enemies while sadly we must elevate and innovate our strength in defense. Unlike today, there was mutual admiration and respect between the leadership of Israel and the US.  Clinton and Rabin were close friends as Clinton’s eulogy ended with“Shalom Chaver” (goodbye friend). Where would Israel be today had Rabin lived?  Clinton suspected we’d be much closer to peaceful relations with his views in this recently printed article to memorialize the 20th anniversary of Rabin’s death. http://www.timesofisrael.com/clinton-i-really-loved-rabin-and-he-would-have-made-peace/  Clinton will also be at Rabin Square in Tel Aviv this weekend to pay tribute to his dear friend.
Yitzhak and Bill
The Search is On
Also in Israel this week is…God.  Well, the real One is probably there all the time, but the actor who portrayed him in the Bruce Almighty movies (which I loved), Morgan Freeman was there for a visit.  He’s in the Holy Land filming a National Geographic documentary on “The Story of God”. Israel is one of many sites they plan to visit to investigate Human’s (past and present) passion for religion. Here is an article that gives more details to this story but I’ve also included it for their verbiage of Jerusalem’s “Wailing” Wall.  Who still calls it the Wailing Wall?  Apparently this online Hollywood magazine,Deadline, still does.  http://deadline.com/2015/06/morgan-freeman-host-the-story-of-god-national-geographic-channel-1201441271/
Morgan at the “Wailing Wall”
The Pressure is On
Wal-Mart is ignorant and cowardly as it bowed to pressure by removing its Israeli Army costume because of “Israeli aggression” and also its “Sheik-Fagin” nose which is ironic since the Sheik-Fagin nose was suppose to be an Arab caricature but was based off the Oliver Twists character, Fagin who was suppose to be Jewish. http://www.foxnews.com/world/2015/10/28/walmart-halts-sale-israeli-soldier-sheik-fagin-nose-halloween-costumes/
Sharing a Meal
But here is an uplifting story about co-existence through food.  Bravo to the owner of the restaurant (near Netanya) called the Hummus Bar which discounts meals to diners who eat their meal in mixed company of Arabs and Jews. I am all in favor of whatever incentive works to help build bridges and what better way than over a bowl of Hummus.
Authentic Israeli Hummus recipe
Ironic Discrimination
For all the efforts of co-existence, there seems to be twice as many against. Case in point, the South African ruling party African National Congress(ANC) should know, first hand, what Apartheid is, yet they chose the bias side by promoting an Israel travel Boycott. It’s despicable that they single out Israel as an apartheid nation with facts of societal equality everywhere from the Supreme Court to the Medical Field to the Knesset, while ignoring flat out Human Rights violations of many other countries that they suggest their citizens freely visit. http://www.timesofisrael.com/south-africa-ruling-party-discourages-travel-to-israel/
Family Dynamics
Two husband and (finally) two children could be the norm for China.  When your national policy limits you to one child and most Chinese families prefer boys (and often illegally arrange gender-selective abortions), your society will inevitably have a male heavy population which is exactly the fact in China. Because of “Supply and Demand”, a Chinese Economist recommends women take two husbands. It’s a practical economic solution that solves the issue for men who don’t have high incomes to share the cost of marriage and prevents “male old maids” who won’t have children to care for them.  Interestingly, nowhere in this article did I see the world “love”.
And just this week, China officially announced it is ending the One-Child policy but, again, economics come into play as many couples can’t afford a second child anyway. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/10/30/world/asia/china-end-one-child-policy.html?emc=edit_na_20151029&nlid=69613202&ref=headline&_r=0
Prayers and Help Needed
A massive 7.5 magnitude Earthquake struck Afghanistan and Pakistan last week causing 364 deaths and 2,000 more injuries.  Condolences and prayers are aimed toward the affected region.
New Concerns
Who says eating processed meat is bad for you?  WHO does… The World Health Organization suggests you put down that chilly dog, BLT and Salami Sandwich in consideration of your colon. Vegan and vegetarians are rejoicing over the WHOs declaration that Red and Processed Meat can cause Cancer. Personally, I believe in moderation to stay healthy and satisfied.
Women’s Health
As we end Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I must admit, I’m perplexed that the American Cancer Society now recommends fewer mammograms in a woman’s lifetime.  Apparently false positives and the added cost and health concerns outweigh the benefits.  Also, suggested is the end to doctor office visit breast exams which all seem strange to me.  You’d think we should be examining ourselves more often to detect any changes but I’m sure the medical professionals reading this might feel differently.
Local Election Day
Please be aware that (our) City of Farmington will be holding Municipal elections (Mayor, City Council and Millage votes) this Tuesday Nov. 3rd.  If you live in FH, please get out and vote. “Easy To Be Hard”
In memory of the passing of Cory Wells (age 74), one of the lead singers ofThree Dog Night, and in tribute to lyrics that represent the sad and frustrating violence taking place against innocent Israelis, here is a song we all need to hear more us: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYdc6-vUcsI
“How can people be so heartless
How can people be so cruel
Easy to be hard
Easy to be cold”

Peaceful Shabbat Shalom.

Condolences

Parents and grandparents are are not suppose to bury their children and grandchildren but sadly this was the case as Alex Bruni z”l (age 22) died this week in a horrible car accident near Ann Arbor.  Alex was a University of Michigan grad with an interest in Medicine and a constant smile for life that was tragically cut short. My thoughts and prayers are with Alex’s parents, Sherry and Mark Bruni and their entire family.  May his life be a blessing onto his family, friends and community.
It has been a very sad week in our community as our son, Aviv’s, favorite High School teacher also passed away at a young age.  Condolences to the family of Jennifer Lanxner z”l, mother of 3 sons, exceptional Hebrew teacher and a truly kind and compassionate person.  May her memory and spirit take hold in those she touched with her dedication to teaching as she was surely a blessing onto many students in our community.
Sending Love and Hugs to our Florida family Jandy, Rob, Max and Zoey Spiegelman and the the whole Spiegelman family on the passing of Rob’s wonderful father, Donny Spiegelman z”l who was married to his beloved wife of 60 years, Bunny Spiegelman. Donny was a kind, sweet, dapper man who raised a beautiful loving family. He will be greatly missed and was truly a blessing onto his family and community.
Condolences to Linda Kovan and her family on the passing of her father, Dr. Thomas Kovan z”l.  May his memory and spirit bring comfort to those who knew and loved him and may his life be a blessing to his family and community.

Paul Ryan is our new Speaker of the House while our legislators also voted in a two year budget deal as John Boehner’s last hurrah. GOP candidates debated this week on CNBC about all things Money related, but the biggest attack was by the Republicans against CNBC, the moderators and the supposedly unfair “catcha” questions. The best line was John Kasich‘s Talmud quote, paraphrased “save one life, save the world”.  Soft-spoken Dr. Ben Carson has now taken the lead in the polls but I’m sure Trump won’t take this situation too lightly.
