Shabbat Shalom
October 23, 2015
Dear family and friends,
My Hobby
These Shabbat Shalom emails are my beekeeping, bodybuilding, basket weaving, bird watching…my hobby.  Like all hobbies, time spent on them is based on time availability.  This week’s writing hobby was squeezed between a trip to NYC, Paul McCartney concert and the western Michigan shores ofSaugatuck, leaving only a few hours to research, write and create the email. Some of you might appreciate a more abbreviated message as today’s email might only take one viewing to read.
Marty McFly
Speaking of Time…it certainly flies and seems to accelerate as we get older.  I turn 55 tomorrow yet I often still feel like a teenager. Kinda like, Marty McFlywho (in the 2nd sequel) soared Back to the Future from the mid 1980s to
Oct. 21, 2015 to “save his children”.  An awesome trilogy with heart and soul. Hopefully our future will hold the key to the debilitating disease, Parkinson’s, which took hold early on to the life and body of actor Michael J. Fox.  Just last week, Michigan Israel Business Bridge honored Dr. Eva Feldman for her immense contributions to science and medicine as she zeros in on cures for Parkinson’s, ALS, Alzheimers and others from research with Stem Cells. May her discoveries benefit those in our lifetime.
“Marty McFly”
US Politics
The political news of the week is that (after intense contemplation) Veep Bidenhas decided not to run for president. Biden and his family have been mourning the loss of son, Beau, and feel the timing isn’t right to amass a strong presidential campaign. This comes as good news for Hillary as she testified Thursday at the Benghazi Committee that will hopefully complete its (drawn out) investigation (of the tragic loss of 4 Americans in Libya) and submit its report sometime next year.  And the Republicans’ dance card has added Paul Ryan as potential House Speaker after conditionally accepting to tango as long as he has cooperating partners between the Freedom Caucus (the extreme conservatives) and the mainstream conservatives. Can Ryan heal their fractured party so “our representatives” can start working across the aisle to pass bills on behalf of their constituents or will it be the same old stubbornness and extreme views we are already experiencing?
Paul Ryan, House Speaker?
World Politics
To the rest of the world, our (basicly unlimited) campaign season and expenditures are absurd. We spend excessive time and money on our races. Our races generally start close to two years in advance.  Ted Cruz announced his candidacy nearly 600 days before the election, compared to the following countries:
Canada‘s longest race was 18.5 weeks
Australia‘s longest race was 11 weeks
France‘s races are 2 weeks
Japan‘s races are 12 days
Singapore‘s races are 9 days
Israel‘s races are 150 days and the last 30 days with no ads on TV or in movie theaters.
But the biggest waste is the excessive campaign money showered by one of the worst mistakes of our Supreme Court, Citizens United. It’s a domino effect; we need a president who can appoint Justices who will repeal CU. Sorry conservative friends, I feel strongly about this one.  Please don’t unsubscribe…
The whole point to this paragraph was to spotlight the new Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau (age 43) from the Liberal Party, knocking out Conservative (though Canada’s conservatives are US’s moderates), Stephen Harpers‘ nearly 10 year rein.  Some of Trudeau’s main concerns are Middle Class Tax Relief,  Environmental Concerns, Legalize Marijuana, Gun Control, Less Military and More Immigrants.
Justin Trudeau, new Canadian Prime Minister
and son of former PM Pierre Trudeau.
Israel
Israel is still experiencing daily random acts of violence while Sec. of State,John Kerry tries to calm the violence but what he needs to do is demand a halt to the incitement of lies and commandments of killing by several Arab leaders.  Some in the arab community are truly brave souls, like journalist,Lucy Aharish, who is emotionally perplexed by anyone who can send children out to kill innocent people. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rYCQjQkRGs
And then I saw this powerful 6 minute video that creatively brings to light who we are as Jews and what we aspire to.  Please view and share, I Am That Jewhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjEXomjpXPU
Music
Here is my week’s mashup of McCartney and NYC’s awesome street band,Brothers Moving. Enjoy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kya2w7XQHvs

Thoughts and prayers are with our neighbor, Patricia Shanbom and her family on the passing of her husband of 54 years, Irving Herbert Shanbom z”l,  father to Jeffrey and Laura (Freedman) Shanbom, Steven and Sherry Shanbom, Andrea and David Siegel and Sam and Franci Shanbom.

May his memory and spirit bring comfort to those who are mourning his death and my his life be a blessing unto all.
Condolences to Lisa and Steven Gretchko and their family on the passing of Lisa’s father, Norman S. Sommers z”l, (age 95). Dear family and friends,
Lies vs. Truth
What should we do when we are repeatedly and repeatedly attacked, defamed and terrorized…?  Sadly it is been our history and seems our destiny.  It’s cyclical and currently on the rise in Israel with the killings (3 this week), the knifings, suicide bombings, car rammings, fire bombings and rocket attacks due to the incitement of lies and rhetoric spewed via social media (and leadership) who are hateful, closed-minded, selfish, have zero value for Life and no interest in living in Peace.  Lies about Israel trying to destroy Jerusalem’s al-Aqsa mosque is preposterous but it doesn’t stop an Arab member of Knesset from voicing this libel.  And Jordan’s King Abdullah (our “friend”) states that the Temple Mount should only be for Muslim prayer, ignoring and flagrantly disputing that our ancient Temple even stood there. And where is the world/media/UN condemnation of this violent incitement? Even our US administration (Israel’s “Best Friend”) blames both sides. Not true… If Arabs laid down their weapons, the violence would stop.  If Israelis laid down their weapons, Jews would die in mass quantities.  There are a few moderate Arabs who are speaking out against this violence, but their message needs more volume and more voices.  Joseph Goebbels’ famous statement during the Holocaust haunt us, If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.” He continues with…“truth is the mortal enemy of the lie”.  The truth about this situation is muddled in the press but here is the historical truth about our ancient Jerusalem Temple from Brown University that was published after a NYTimes article suggested the Temple’s existence might be debatable.
Israel,
You are my brother in history,
My sister in fortune,
The mother of my courage,
The father of my heart,
The child of my longing,
And the light of generations.
To you I pledge my right arm
And my voice in song.
To you I pledge my soul.
To you I pledge my spirit.
Chicken vs. the Egg
Israel has an incredible sense of resilience, no matter what the adversity…life, as usual, always moves on.  Is it the chicken or the egg? What causes us to pick up the pieces and never give up? Has the constant attacks on our peoplehood given us the strength or we are innately strong to bear the constant attacks we must endure. Meanwhile, Concerts, music, culture, school, shopping, coffee shop visits…everyday life continues.  Even our quintessential American Jewish Comic, Jerry Seinfeld,  knows the importance of supporting Israel and will be gracing his humor upon Israelis in December with two shows (after the first one rapidly sold out). Kol Hakavod (All of the Respect) to Jerry for bringing his stand up act to Israel (for the first time).
http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4708497,00.html  There should be a request to all entertainers, celebrities and world leaders to come vistit Israel to show their support, solidarity and insistance the Israel has the right to exist (which is constantly being questioned).
Jerry and Shimon
Kurds vs. Turks
The Republic of Turkey started their week with a three day mourning period for the innocent souls lost to the double suicide bombing during a Peace Rally. 95 people perished and 250 were wounded at Turkey’s deadliest terrorist attack in history.  Turks are picking up the pieces as they investigate the perpetrators with blame ranging from Kurd rebels to Daesh to some who think it was the government to garner sympathy prior to the Nov. 1st elections.
Turkey’s neighborhood

Gloom vs. Glam
I cannot be all doom and gloom and what better way than a paragraph about music and the arts.  Happy 50th annivesary to the National Endowments for the Arts with gratitude to President Johnson who signed the Arts and Humanity Act which planted the seed for the Endowment. Dance, Theatre, Music, Art…have all benefited from this agency but Americans are the true beneficiaries. Here is an interactive website spotlighting the NEA history:https://www.arts.gov/50th  And in honor of the NEA’s Golden Jubilee, PBS hosted a jammed packed talent fest presentation preformed at the White House Wednesday (to air on PBS Jan. 8th) with the likes of Buddy GuyQueen LatifahAudra McDonaldSmokey Robinson, Trombone Shorty, Esperanza SpaldingBrian Stokes MitchellJames Taylor and several more.

Happy 50th Birthday
Bernie vs. Hillary
The Dem’s Debate this week was filled with important issues like…
immigration, income and wealth inequality, cost of education, climate and environment, the banks, gun control and Health Care. But one of the most memorable lines of the night came from Bernie Sanders to Hillary Clinton, who said, “…the American people are sick and tired of hearing about your damn emails”. Yes, let’s put that issue to bed and discuss what is most concerning for most Americans. Hillary and Bernie dominated the debate with help from the Silver Fox, Anderson Cooper.  The big question still remains about Joe Biden.  Did the frontrunners’ debate success diminish his odds? His stalled decision is slowly converting from intrigue to fatigue. He needs to make up his mind…like yesterday.
Bravo to NYC restaurant owner, Danny Meyer, for eliminating tipping to help equalize the wage gap of his staff while the minimum wage increase is debated in the State.
Bravo to Lizzie Velasquez on her bravery after being bullied as she brings encouragement to many with a TedX talk that changed her life.  Here is the trailer to her new documentary.
Bravo to Hugh Hefner (89 year old editor in chief) and Playboy as they have come to the conclusion to eliminate nudes from the magazine since the internet makes their female photos obsolete. Now, you’ll really only be reading the magazine just for the article.
Bravo to California Governor Jerry Brown for signing the New Motor Voter Act which automatically registers (to vote) all new driver when receiving their licenses. They join Oregon in this opt-out policy (meaning you’ll need to opt-out of voter registration rather than asking to opt-in).
Bravo to James Franco on becoming a (37 year old) Bar Mitzvah.
Bravo to Julie Hermelin for bringing her Momstamp website to Metro Detroit. Check out this ingenious online tool to get trusted and reliable advice on “all things” family related from connected friends.  https://www.momstamp.com/
Bravo to Pink Breast Cancer Awareness month. Though we should be aware all year long… Know the signs, self-examine and get your mammograms. http://www.nationalbreastcancer.org/breast-cancer-awareness-month
BS to West Africa’s treatment of Mental Illness as they chain those who suffer from this devastating disease to a tree.
BS to the Million Man March 20th reunion.  Though it was billed as “justice or else” one speaker, Rev. Wright, preferred to offer up anti-Israel rhetoric instead. And of course the organizer, Louis Farrakhan didn’t object as he too is often labeled anti-semitic. http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2015/10/10/check-out-what-rev-jeremiah-wright-says-about-jesus-during-pointed-speech-about-palestinian-justice/
BS to the growing proxy war in Syria and not just between Russia and the United States. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/asad-abukhalil/syria-proxy-wars_b_5874488.html
BS to Columbus Day as the real Chris Columbus was a scoundrel who kidnapped and enslaved thousands of people during his voyage, abused the natives he encountered and was brutal to his own people.  As history of his atrocities come to light, many states abandoned the holiday and in our city of Detroit, a century old statue was vandalized by taping a hatchet to the head. Alaska just renamed the 2nd monday in Oct. “Indigenous People’s Day”

Dassi in Ashkelon, Israel

With our granddaughter, Dassi (and her parents Ariella and Tzvi) and our son, Mataan all in Israel, I too would like to be “Homeward Bound” as Israel is the Jewish Homeland and those living there deserve to live in peace. I know, it’s a quirky segway, but please enjoy this beautiful and vintage rendition (from 1976 SNL) of George Harrison and the other Paul singing Homeward Bound.

Wishing you and your family a Peaceful Shabbat Shalom

Our thoughts and prayers are with dear friends, Mike and Sue Curhan and their family on the passing of Michael’s beloved father, Dr. Robert Curhan z”l(age 83) who was married to his wife, Adele, for 60 years.  After delivering numerous babies here in Detroit, the Curhans moved to Rhode Island where he continued his OB/GYN career for nearly 40 more years to many devoted patients. May his spirit and memories bring comfort to those who knew and love him and may his life be a blessing to all those he touched.
It’s tragic and against nature’s way when a parent must bury a child. Condolences to Jimmy and Stephanie Zack on the loss of their beloved daughter, Katherine “Katie” Hilary Zack z”l (age 41).  May her love, spirit and memories help ease the pain of those mourning her loss and may her life be a blessing to her family and community.
Gertrude Woodard Taylor (1921-2015) was the daughter of a Massachusetts fisherman and the wife of a North Carolina doctor. She devoted her life to her marriage and her five children, four boys and a girl including legendary musician James Taylor. Condolences to James and his family on the loss of his mother and the life she created with her philosophy of…
“Life is finite, but love lasts forever…”

Dear family and friends,
Fragility of Life
Will it be this year, this decade, this century?  How many more years and deaths must we endure before America’s love affair and obsession with guns comes to an end. Do gun lovers and gun makers take pride in our well known global stats that we are the leading nation in gun ownership and gun deaths? And, yes, they are inextricably connected. We have a serious addiction to guns and even baby rehab steps to wean ourselves, it’s better than the absent efforts taken so far. We need someone with balls to stop this madness and stand up to the almighty gun lobby.  Let’s take Israel as an example of a nation, surrounded by enemy neighbors,(near and far) yet they think our lack of gun regulations are idiotic. With no enemies neighboring us, we’ve created one very serious internal enemy within us.  Check out this eye-opening article about Israel’s regulations (and lack of mass school murders, minimal innocent gun deaths and decreased suicide rate, but no lack of terrorism, as indicated in the next paragraph): http://www.haaretz.com/jewish-world/the-jewish-thinker/.premium-1.679115  But we are stuck in a cycle of sadness/madness as we continue to bury our innocent gun-related victims.  Life is Fragile asSting poignantly points out, while he sings this beautiful rendition with Stevie Wonder.
If blood will flow when flesh and steel are one
Drying in the colour of the evening sun
Tomorrow’s rain will wash the stains away
But something in our minds will always stay
Perhaps this final act was meant
To clinch a lifetime’s argument
That nothing comes from violence and nothing ever could
For all those born beneath an angry star
Lest we forget how fragile we are
(Stevie and Sting together)

Fight for Life
The Middle East is always a volatile region but this week was especially violent. Russia is bombing Syria with a few stray missiles crashing into Iran. Arab aggression against Israelis has increased as 4 Israelis were killed by terrorist attacks.  A mother and father were gunned down in their car, witnessed (in the back seat) by their orphaned four children while a few days later, two Israelis were knifed to death in the old city. Also, several shots by local Arabs were aimed into Sukkot with two injuries and it seems stabbing are on the rise (Thank God for strict gun regulations in Israel otherwise more deaths would occur).  An escalation of terror and threatening behavior has the Jewish community and political leadership concerned about what actions to take.  We are constantly in a no win situation as evident by some media who continuously blames Israel. This week’s example came from the BBC which blamed Israel for the killing of a Palestinian yet neglected to mention he was the terrorist who had just stabbed two people to death. This was the headline the BBC used to report the incident: “Palestinian shot dead after Jerusalem attack kills two.”  There is always a double standard involving Israel. But an AP reporter brought this to light when the US mistakenly bombed a Doctors Without Borders Hospital and he questioned the State Department as to their comparison condemnation when last summer Israel mistakenly targeted a school. https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=413&v=WIIbrSHWJ7Y
Yet, we must always continue our efforts to follow the moral high ground even when odds are against us. Though, there was no second thought about his support of Israel from Jon Bon Jovi this week as he performed for the first time in Israel to a packed house in Tel Aviv. He even dedicated a song to Israel called “We Don’t Run” and suggested it be used as the Tel Aviv fight song. http://www.timesofisrael.com/empathetic-jon-bon-jovi-dedicates-song-we-dont-run-to-israel/ Of course, the king of BDS, Roger Waters lashed out at Bon Jovi for stepping foot in Israel but Howard Stern came to the rescue as only Howard can, with lots of expletives
Life Lost
It would have been John Lennon’s 75th birthday (today)! In his honor, aHuman Peace Sign of 2,000 people was formed in Central Park (across the street from his Dakota apartment), 35 years after he was gunned down just 2 months after his 40th birthday.
Lives Saved
A Halloween treat will be received by 6,000 families as prison inmates convicted of drug charges will be released at the end of the month. We have overcrowded prisons due to harsh drug sentencings in the 80s and 90s. Globally, the US imprisons 1/4 of all inmates. 1/3 of the convicts being released are undocumented immigrants who will be immediately deported, but that leaves 4,000 people who will need to find jobs in our society.
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/10/07/us/us-to-release-6000-inmates-under-new-sentencing-guidelines.html?_r=0  To handle this influx, probation offices and employment centers will need to work overtime to prevent
re-institutionalization.
Flooded Lives
South Carolina got dumped on by 11 trillion gallons of water which is causing cataclysmic flooding with rivers replacing streets and lakes replacing neighborhoods. 11 dams have failed while 35 others are being carefully watched. Floodwaters unearthed caskets as shocked residents waded through the tide to collect them. Vacated homes are being looted. The water may not subside for another two weeks and the overall damage will likely be in the billions. Though Hurricane Joaquin veered from the shore, its damaging rain still reeked havoc and also took the life of the cargo ship, El Faro, attempting to avoid the storm but lost power and helplessly sank with 33 people lost at sea.
Lives in the Crossfire
The internal US investigations will be ongoing to determine why our air forces struck a Doctors Without Borders hospital in Afghanistan. But the argument that it was a War Crime as opposed to a serious mistake is now being debated in the international arena.  DWB has requested an independent investigation by the The International Humanitarian Fact-Finding Commission but it needs one of the 76 nations connected to this organization to sign on to the inquiry. By the way, neither Israel nor the United States is a member of this commission.  No one has stepped up yet, but time will tell…In the meantime, burials for the 12 medical staff and 10 patients take precedent for the survivors over the investigation.
Life’s Accomplishments
Congrats to all of this week’s Nobel Prize Winners.  The Nobel Prize for Peace is announced 6am today the exact time I send these messages to your inboxes so I don’t know the winner as I write these words to you… But if I were on the selection committee, I would choose Pope Francis for his humble bridge building efforts. And speaking of the Vatican, Happy 50th anniversary (Oct. 28th) to Nostra Aetate which rewrote (by Pope Paul VI) the relationship between Catholics and non-Christians (specifically Jews).  It was the document that declared Jews were not guilty of killing Jesus and included a denouncement anti-semitism. http://tinyurl.com/NostraAetateSummary
Musical That Lives On…
Happy 40th anniversary to Rocky Horror Picture Show.  For the past 4 decades somewhere in this nation a midnight showing of this cult classic with Susan Sarandon, Tim Curry, Meatloaf and the gang has been actively watched on neighborhood screens.  The crew reunited to reminisce about the film, which started as a Play and flopped as the movie premiered but once fans caught on it reached legendary cinematic status. Will he or won’t he join the race? Joe Biden won’t be at this week’s Dems. debate but his presidential decision is imminent. Apparently, it was his son, Beau’s dying wish for his father to join the race but Joe and his family are still debating the final decision.
The GOP is debating who will be their next Speaker of the House now that the front runner, Kevin McCarthy, has dropped out. Jason Chaffetz would like the job but he’s got lots of gaffs in his repertoire too.  Remember, he’s the guy who presented that crazy anti-choice chart (that made no sense) to the Planned Parenthood hearing which was quickly refuted. The vote has been postponed as the search for the GOP leadership continues on…

Shabbat Shalom
October 2, 2015
Dear family and friends,
“But there’s a full moon risin”
We are in the midst of the Sukkot Season as the festive week ends with the two holidays of Shemini Atzeret (8th day of solemn gathering) and Simchat Torah (rejoicing with the Torah).  My favorite weather season of Autumn is always the backdrop to this harvest celebration and this week it also included the Supermoon lunar eclipse (last occuring 33 years ago) so how can I ignore the perfect song to attach to this Harvest Lunar week. This music video creatively spans decades from now to when Neil first released it in 1992 while the consistency of Love remains the theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2MtEsrcTTs  Some say Harvest Moon is the sequel to (my favorite Young Album) Harvest released 20 years prior in 1972.  Apparently, Neil has used the moon in 28 of his songs and finds it his “religious” inspiration.
“Is there life on Mars?”
And speaking of celestial issues, apparently there is now definitive proof of liquid water on Mars begging the question of the existence of “life on Mars” (referencing another great song by David Bowie), heightening our urgency of exploration. If you’d like to explore more Mars facts, check out this article:
And of course, the timing is perfect for Hollywood as the new Matt Damon movie, The Martian, opens this weekend. The interesting story about the movie starts with the book that was written by a computer programmer with three excessive years of research, then self-published and offered to readers for free. In fact, you can still download the book free of charge.  It was a smart move as it provided a wide audience and interest in making it into a blockbuster movie.
“Plenty of sunshine heading my way”
Nasa is singing Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah about Mars’ possibilities just as this famous verse was uttered from the lips of John Boehner this week after announcing his retirement. But this doesn’t mean our Congress or Nation will be singing the tune anytime soon. Mr. Boehner’s departure is bad news for all of us since it comes after legislators more conservative than him weren’t pleased that he wasn’t willing to shut down the government over defunding Planned Parenthood.  As the Pope’s words were still echoing in the halls of Congress, his message of unity to our fractured democracy was disrespectfully ignored.  Extreme views on both sides will never be implemented and compromise is the only way to govern effectively, yet what seems absent in our democratic process are the true diplomates who can build bridges to fix our ailments.
“and friends just can’t be found”
The United Nations is suppose to be a Global Bridge but sadly the body that represent all nations is sometimes more bias (especially against Israel) than bridge building. This week the UN walls heard the voices of world leaders at the annual General Assembly.  The GA afforded the opportunity for Heads of State to speak their minds. Bibi’s speech spoke his disapproval of the UN with a 45 second silent glare at the audience. Obama’s speech was critiqued for what he didn’t include… the Palestinians which angered PA leader, Abbas who countered with his disownment of the 1995 Oslo Peace Accords including the agenda of a two-state solution. Several historic meetings also took place at the GA. Obama and Castro connected to continue their country’s renewed relationship but the pow wow between Putin and Obama had a few more thorns involved. Yes, they both are angling to eliminate Daesh (aka. ISIS) from Syria but Putin favors his long time friend, Assad while Obama still thinks Assad is Syria’s 2nd satan. Russia stuck anti-Assad forces in Syria this week but were they Daesh fighters or the moderate rebels (the US is trying to support). It’s a very messy situation in Syria but that seems to encourage recruitment to this satanic cause. Each year more crazies are joining Daesh with 30,000 fresh terrorist entering Syria this year to help fight their evil efforts. That’s twice as many as last year and they are coming from all across the world (including 250 Americans). http://www.ibtimes.com/efforts-stop-foreign-isis-recruitment-are-failing-estimated-30000-fighters-have-2115671
Great position of Israel’s flag
“and Moscow girls make me sing and shout”
Not only did Putin reach out to President Obama this week but he also connected with Elton John after Elton was pranked with a fake Putin call.  It all started when Sir John expressed his outrage at Russia’s anti-gay stance and now Putin has agreed to meet with the “Pinball Wizard” whenever they can coordinate their schedules.
Putin and John
“Up on Cripple Creek she sends me”

The excitement over Mars’ water discovery is expected since water is our most precious commodity. Our bodies are approximately 65% water.  We can’t live without water for more than about 3 days.  California has been in dire straits suffering through this current 3 year drought and 11% of the world’s population lives without access to drinking water.  So protecting our Michigan water is of utmost importance.  Thank You Senators Debbie Stabenow and Gary Petersfor helping to safeguard our Great Lakes with the The Pipeline Improvement and Preventing Spills Act.  This measure will help prevent tanker accidents and pipeline ruptures so Great Lakes water will remain oil free for many generations to come.  http://tinyurl.com/OilFreeGreatLakes

But Michigan has another water concern.  Ever since Flint was disconnected to the Detroit River system and switched to the Flint River, their water supply has smelled and tasted “funny”.  Turns out lead is the culprit which is quite dangerous especially for children whose blood-lead levels have doubled since the water switch. Gov. Snyder has expressed his concern and support to help rectify this serious situation as he secretly helped distribute 1,500 water filters to a Flint pastor. http://tinyurl.com/FlintFilters  And sometimes too much water can cause catastrophies as with Hurricanes coliding with civilizations.  Wishing the East Coast safety and minor disruptions with the onslaught of Hurricane Joaquin.
Nearly 800 Million people live without access to drinking water.

“Oh yes, I am wise, but it’s wisdom born of pain”
Kudos to Planned Parenthood president, Cecile Richards, on keeping vigilant with the facts on the benefits of protecting the vital work of PP at the congressional hearing this week. And after listening to some of the recordings, Cecile’s mother, the late Governor Ann Richards would have been proud as she stood up to badgering and hostile interplay with some of the legislators. Cecile volunteered her time to answer questions however conspicuously absent was the creator of the highly edited and dishonest video at the center of this witch hunt.  Here is a detailed article about the proceedings that also includes 6 audio clips with one of them from Congresswoman Brenda Lawrencehttp://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2015/09/29/444528541/6-clips-of-audio-you-should-hear-from-the-planned-parenthood-hearing And for a comical viewpoint of the congressional proceedings, check out Seth Meyers‘ “closer look” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7pNkqVmNKM
And speaking of Women’s Health, after reading this NYTimes article about theBRCA gene mutation and ashkenazi women, it has inspired me to take action: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/27/opinion/sunday/elizabeth-wurtzel-the-breast-cancer-gene-and-me.html?emc=edit_ty_20150925&nl=opinion&nlid=69613202&_r=0

“There’s a man with a gun over there, telling me I got to beware”

Like (horrible) clockwork, our country has yet again sustained needless gunshot deaths and injuries from a mass shooting at a community college 90 miles south of Eugene.  Condolences to the victims families and the injured. More discussion will again occur about gun regulations, but sadly (and even without a crystal ball, I can predict), absolutely nothing will be done to help stop the next mass shooting.

A well-deserved honor took place at Carnegie Hall Thursday with a musical tribute to Bill Withers and his legendary music created during his short career. This will be his 2nd honor this year as in April he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  His career was mighty but short and on his own terms as he created and produced his music from 1970-1985 but then decided to get out of the business.  Thank you City Winery and Michael Dorf for spotlighting this modest but beloved talent. Here is an American Bandstand classic of my favorite Bill Withers song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkuTn1A6gco
Wishing you and your family a Peaceful Shabbat Shalom and Hag Sameach!

Shabbat Shalom and
Happy Sukkot

September 25, 2015

Dear family and friends,
Words of wisdom to live by as we progress into our future…“Keep trying. Stay humble, Trust your instincts. Most importantly, act. When you come to a fork in the road, take it.”
Lawrence Peter “Yogi” Berra, RIP
Sunday Evening
Hag Sukkot Sameach (Happy Holiday of Sukkot): the harvest celebration when we build, eat and (some people) sleep in our 3-sided temporary, leafy roofed huts for 8 days (or 7 days in Israel) to remind us of the temporary shelters we lived in during our exodus. Wishing wonderful weather upon all Sukkah dwellers this year.

The Pope’s True Soul
Pope Francis arrived in the US on Tuesday (erev Yom Kippur) but not sure if anyone greeted him with a “Good Yontiff, Pontiff” (heard that one from Cantor David Propis). His first stop was DC and he didn’t disappoint his fans by choosing a Fiat for his motorcade.  Throughout his US visit we are expected to hear messages of Empathy for the Poor, Patience for the Immigrants andPersistence on Protecting our Planet. One pitiful politician boycotted the Pontiff’s joint session. Arizona republican congressman, Paul Gosar (whose name does not deserve fame but hopefully will be voted out in his next election) protested his objections to the Pope promoting “questionable science as Catholic dogma”.  Sorry, Arizonian, if this congressman represents you. PF’s US tour includes DC, NYC (to address the General Assembly at the United Nations) and Philly but he plans to keep his visits geared toward “the people” as proof, he chose not to eat in the congressional dining room with legislators but to eat with hundreds of homeless people in a soup kitchen while helping to serve the meals.  Late night comics are having a fun field day with his visit.  Jimmy Fallon has rules for visitors, like: “Don’t fake sneeze in front of the Pope, just to get an easy blessing”.  And this is no joke, there is a website http://jokewiththepope.org/ that is collecting “donated” jokes to benefit three charities with the winning Jokster being named “honorary comic advisor to the Pope” and his charity of choice will receive $10,000. Bless you Pope even when you don’t sneeze.

Egypt’s Efforts
Egypt is trying some diplomacy of its own by releasing 100 journalist who were jailed for the “crime of protest”.  There is no free speech in Egypt and in fact, Egypt is considered one of the 10 worst offenders of imprisoning journalist. Some frontpage headlines came from the freedom of these high profile journalist, but where are the front page headlines of the over 3,200 homes Egypt destroyed on the Sinai Peninsula. If they were Gazan homes, it would make top coverage but since they were Egyptian homes it is only backpage billing.  By the way, these homes were on the Gazan border, and their destruction is good for Israel, as the effort will help prevent military supplies creeping through Gaza tunnels. The goal of this two year project is to demolish the whole town of Rafah with a population of 78,000 people.  http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-34317654
Lies
Short term selfish goals will always end up biting you in the butt and possibly doing harm to your fellow citizens.  Corporate Leaders and Politicians should take a look at their predecessors.  Crime doesn’t pay.  Lies always are revealed.  This week’s big offender is the “People’s Car” Company aka.Volkswagen.  To save a few Deutsche Marks (Euros today), some corporate bigwig decided to jerry-rig the pollution gage of the exhaust to indicate a lower level of toxic emissions when being tested but when the rigged gages were off while driving on the road, the cars spewed out 40% more emissions into our environment and lungs. 11 Million cars were involved and it could take $18 Billion to clean up this mess not to mention the broken trust which might be irreparable.
More Lies
Political deception is helping Carly Fiorina climb in the polls after her bold (but untrue) statements at the debate.  This anti-women’s candidate, flat out, lied about a Planned Parenthood video with a live fetus and sticks to her lie even as all fact-checkers dispute its existence.  Next lie…the ad she refers to that defines her success at HP was paid for by her SuperPac.  But back to defending Planned Parenthood, which sadly continues to be attacked by legislators both in our US Congress and local State Houses as they try to defund and delegitimizing women’s health services. Attempts to “save” federal dollars in favor of saving low-income women’s health services is lopsided and inhumane, but this is just what legislators insist is the “right” thing for our nation.  By the way, not sure why politicians don’t understand that providing birth control information and material (through PP) will help reduce unintended pregnancies and abortions.  Let’s continue to move forward in the 21st Century and not back to the 50s when all women were suppose to be “barefoot and pregnant”  http://www.latimes.com/business/hiltzik/la-fi-mh-cost-of-defunding-planned-parenthood-20150922-column.html
More Mecca Mayhem
For the 2nd time in two weeks, (after the crane accident) tragedy has struck the religious city of Mecca as Muslims celebrate the holiday of Eid al-Adha translated into Feast of Sacrifice that commemorates Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son till the angel intervened. Mecca is the religious and geographical epicenter of Islam.  As a side note and though I have not read it, I have heard that Jerusalem is not prominent or even mentioned in the Quran, yet they feel their Jerusalem al-Aqsa Mosque built centuries later on the sacred site of the Jewish Temple Mount should not allow Jews to pray there while using violence to prevent them. http://www.timesofisrael.com/israel-slams-jordanian-king-over-temple-mount-violence/
But back to Mecca, millions of people each year celebrate the Eid with a journey to Mecca and sadly on occasion (like this year) a stampede causes chaos, injury and death.  More than 700 people will killed and nearly 1,000 were injured during this week’s Hajj Pilgrimage.  This is nearing their worst Mecca catastrophe since 1990 when over 1,400 pilgrims were killed during a stampede.
Stewart’s Efforts
Did you know the 9/11 Bill to assist First Responders had a limit of 5 years and is coming to an end at the end of this month?  Jon Stewart knows all about this absurdity as he helped get the bill passed 5 years ago and is pissed it even has a limit. 72,000 First Responders are part of the World Trade Center Health Program and nearly half are being treated for various diseases while 3,000 of them have Cancer. Mr. Stewart is lobbying congress to make the World Trade Center Health Program permanent so the victims need not worry about ending assistance for their chemo treatments.
Dislike
Apparently, Facebook is working on a “dislike” button so when a post initiates a response from you but not necessarily “like”, you can express your thoughts.  It seems that the response might be on a scale (from approval to disapproval) and not just like or dislike.  The Facebook geeks are working on the formula and I will try to keep you posted on the progress.
Bagels and Ping Pong
Up until the mid 1960s, Americans could only get their bagels at authentic bagel shops situated in Jewish enclaves, but all that changed by Daniel Thompson (who died this week) when he invented the Bagel Machine and brought the doughy delight to the masses. Mr. Thompson was the son of a Jewish Bagel Maker and his invention was meant to help his father. True enthusiasts continue to only eat H & H (or the likes) as Lenders would never touch the lips of most bagel lovers.  Totally unrelated, Mr. Thompson also invented the folding Ping Pong Table, like the one that sits in our Rec Room.
Wishing you and your family a Peaceful Shabbat Shalom and a Sweet holiday of Succot.

Shabbat Shalom
September 18, 2015
Dear family and friends,
Holiday Reflections
The (10) Days of Awe  are upon us during this sacred time between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur.  It is an important time of reflection as we take stock in our actions of the past year and make amends to “us, our family and the world”.  May we all be blessed with another year of this appreciated life. On Rosh Hashana our names are written in the book of life and on Yom Kippur, they hopefully get sealed. With this in mind, I express my sincere apology to any of you I may have hurt and wish all of you an easy fast and “gamar hatima tova” = “a good final sealing”.
This poem by Robin Becker captures the essence of these Days of Awe.
Turn from evil and do good
the Psalmist says
turning
Round the turn
turn the key
clock the turn
turn in time
time to turn words into footsteps
to lead the young colt to the field
to turn from the old year
the old self
You are ready
to turn and be healed
only face
only begin

This is the season for us to Turn, Turn, Turn.  Please enjoy this beautiful updated acoustic version (by Sara Niemietz and W.G. Snuffy Wolden) of this classic song (written by Pete Seeger) using biblical lyrics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-jj4TkEIt4

Defeat Daesh
As we turn from introspection to our external world, we see the crisis in Syriacontinuing to dominate the spotlight with millions of refugees spilling throughout Europe as concerned EU leaders struggle with their acceptance and responsibility.  Both, Syrians on the road and back home, are living a nightmare as the world debates its response to this 4-year civil war between a Maniacal Dictator (who barrel bombs his own citizens), Rebel Forces andDaesh (self-proclaimed ISIS). What can the world do so Syrians can hopefully return home someday? Who do we support in this conflict? Putin seems to have chosen Assad for support.  Daesh (with their evil intent) is one enemy most agree needs to be wiped clean from this Earth and bravo to Australia this week for their efforts in targeting Daesh’s artillery in Syria. They also have been bombing Daesh targets in Iraq for the last year. The UK, UAE, Canada and France have also bombed a few Daesh forces recently.  And it looks like Qatar and Saudi Arabia might be willing to jump into this Daesh fighting effort. Forces against Daesh significantly outnumber the estimate 30,000-50,000 Daesh fighters.  With minimal coordinated efforts, the small number of Daesh fighters should be snuffed out easily…but obviously this is not the case.
Crane Collapse
Severe weather and unstable equipment was to blame for the deadly crane accident that killed over 100 worshippers and injured 400 more at the most sacred Islamic site in Mecca.  Saudi Arabia’s famous Bin Laden family’s company was in charge of the construction during the accident which occurred just 10 days before the annual religious journey of Hajj starting Sept. 21st.  The wealthy Saudi government has already committed to paying each family of a victims $260,000 and those who were injured $150,000.
Sequoias Safety
Not to dray (yiddish for worry, I think) too much on world disasters, but here at home (if you live in California) they are fighting a draught and serious wildfires that have consumed 725 square miles of land (larger than the size of NYC). These dangerous fires are now creeping up on our tallest and longest living organisms on our planet, the 2,000 year old and nearly 300 feet high Sequoias trees. Though fear not… as dendrologist (arborist) believe Sequoias insulate themselves from fire and even thrive afterward as underbrush is cleared for new growth. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/2015/09/150914-california-rough-fire-sequoias-chicago-stump-wildfires/
Dignity
Speaking of California, I support their new bill that approves Physician assisted end of life practices.  This will bring relief to those who are terminally ill, suffering and would like to die with dignity. Once Governor Jerry Brown signs the bill, they will join this growing list of states which already have laws on their books permitting death with dignity: Washington, Oregon, Vermont, New Mexico and Montana.
Nearing 10 Million
As our global population fluctuates with the cycle of life, Israel has increased her population to 8.4 million as she enters the new year of 5776.  Immigration to Israel increased this year while the population continued to grow.  Israel’s populaiton is estimated to hit 10 million within the  next 10-15 years. http://www.timesofisrael.com/israel-population-hits-8-4-million-ahead-of-jewish-new-year/ And according to one survey, Israel is the 4th best place in the world to raise a family.  Sorry US and UK, you didn’t make the list but some other surprising countries did:
New Beginning
4 years (to the day on Sept. 9th), Israel re-opened her embassy in Cairo, Egypt.  The new location is housed in the residence of the ambassador since 4 years ago, the then embassy building was destroyed by Egyptian protestors. Finding a new building for the Israeli embassy has been unsuccessful, but Hatikva is our motto and hope is on the horizon.
Eastern Friends
20,000 Jewish refugees during WWII found safe haven in Shanghai and this week a Jewish Memorial Park was dedicated in their honor at the Fushouyuan cemetery in Shanghai.  The compassion of the Chinese people during the 1930s and 1940s will not be forgotten by the Jews who were welcomed to their country. Life was not easy especially after Japanese interfered in 1937 and then many Jews left the county after 1949 when China became the People’s Republic. http://www.jta.org/2015/09/09/news-opinion/world/shanghai-opens-park-to-honor-20000-jewish-holocaust-refugees-sheltered-in-city
Debate Debunk
At this week’s Republican Debate, defunding Planned Parenthood and demonizing this lifesaving organizations was a common theme.  The skewed and bias videos helped fuel that fire but when research of Fetal Tissue is investigated, there is no debate as to its medical advances. By the way, PP does not sell the tissue and is only reimbursed for distribution of the valuable medical material.  Fetal Tissue has been used in the advancements of thePolio Vaccine, Parkinson’s Disease, Spine and Eye disorders, Stroke treatments and many more.  This article in the US World and News Report has a complete list of advancements.
http://www.usnews.com/news/slideshows/top-discoveries-from-fetal-tissue-research/1 And, Mr. Trump, vaccines do not cause Autism as you stated in last night’s debate.  The falsified medical report on the connection was retracted and debunked years ago and the reason there are more cases within the last 25 years is that the labeling process was expanded to include the full spectrum. http://www.publichealth.org/public-awareness/understanding-vaccines/vaccine-myths-debunked/ Another topic from the debate references a blond republican talking head who thought there was too much emphasis on subjects relating to the Jews (ie. Israel), as Ann Coulter‘s twitter feed the next day was (and I’m quoting) ” How many F—ing Jews do these people think there are in the United States”.  Israel will always be important to the Jews but it is also very important to the US as it is the only democratic ally in the Middle East and it should never be a political football between the Parties. A final note that holds true for both blonds (DT & AC), sadly, the more outrageous…the more attention…the more followers.
Nature’s Best
And while I’m talking about health issues, let’s destigmatize public breast feeding.  Why is it OK to show “them” at Victoria’s Secret but not while they are nourishing their hungry children. Bravo to these Military Moms who will hopefully help us on that path:
Wishing you and your loved ones a Peaceful Shabbat Shalom, an Easy Fast and a Sweet Shana Tova.

Condolences to the family of Jack Robinson z”l on his unexpected passing this week at the age of 85.  Jack was a vibrant community leader who built the Perry Drug store empire but most importantly was committed to his beloved family as in recent years his focus was caring for his wife, Aviva Robinson. Our thoughts and prayers are with Beth and Stephen Swartz and their entire family as we hope Jack’s memory and spirit bring comfort to all who loved him.
Condolences to Steve and Liz Schubiner and their family on the passing of Steve’s mother, Barbara Schubiner z”l at the age of 88.  May her memory and love bring comfort to those who mourn her death.
Mazel Tov to Betsy Appleton and Eric Zuckerman on the engagement of their daughter, Julie Zuckerman to Ryan Gessin.  Apparently they are dubbed “JZ and Feyonce”.  Ryan is lucky to have many years ahead with Betsy and Eric as parents-in-law.

Alerts To Threats In Europe

The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent events in Syria and have therefore raised their security level from “Miffed” to “Peeved.” Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to “Irritated” or even “A Bit Cross.”The English have not been “A Bit Cross” since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies nearly ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorized from “Tiresome”to “A Bloody Nuisance.” The last time the British issued a “Bloody Nuisance” warning level was in 1588, when threatened by the Spanish Armada.

The Scots have raised their threat level from “Pissed Off” to “Let’s get the Bastards.” They don’t have any other levels. This is the reason they have been used on the front line of the British army for the last 300 years.

The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from “Run” to “Hide.” The only two higher levels in France are“Collaborate” and “Surrender.” The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France ‘s white flag factory, effectively paralyzing the country’s military capability.

Italy has increased the alert level from “Shout Loudly and Excitedly” to“Elaborate Military Posturing.” Two more levels remain: “Ineffective Combat Operations” and “Change Sides.”

The Germans have increased their alert state from “Disdainful Arrogance” to“Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs.” They also have two higher levels: “Invade a Neighbour” and “Lose.”

Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual; the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels .

The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy.

Australia, meanwhile, has raised its security level from “No worries” to “She’ll be alright, Mate.” Two more escalation levels remain: “Crikey! I think we’ll need to cancel the barbie this weekend!” and “The barbie is cancelled.”So far no situation has ever warranted use of the last final escalation level.

A final thought – ” Greece is collapsing, the Iranians are getting aggressive, and Rome is in disarray. Welcome back to 430 BC”.

Shabbat Shalom
Rosh Hashana 5776
September 11, 2015
Dear family and friends,
As we memorialize their shocking deaths, 14 years ago today, may the 2,977 souls of the 9/11 terrorist attack continue to help us Tikkun Olam, heal our broken world in hopes of a peaceful future for us and generations to come.
“Do not be daunted by the enormity of the world’s grief.
Do justly, now.
Love mercy, now.
Walk humbly now.
You are not obligated to complete the work,
but neither are you free to abandon it.”
The Talmud
Shana Tova
As the New Jewish Year of 5776 approaches this Sunday evening, we reflect on our actions of the past year and prepare ourselves to pray, repent and make promises of improvement for the coming year. These High Holidays are the time to take stock in our lives and just as we are committed to Tikkun Olam (repair the world) so too should we work to Tikkun ourselves.  As we listen to the sounds of the Shofar, may forgiveness be blessed upon all of us as we enter the High Holidays of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur.  This beautiful song brings the message and meaning of the Shofar to heart.
Heartfelt Compassion
Heart is what’s needed to handle the current refugee crisis, second only to the post WWII era (when our ancestors were seeking shelter).  An estimated 4 million Syrians have fled their war-torn country and as they spread across Europe, the EU is demanding equivalent participation by EU members.  The United States has agreed to increase our acceptance by 10,000 in the next year. Even Israel is debating their role in this crisis with her enemy neighbors. From the beginning, Israel has (quietly) given lifesaving medical assistant in a field hospital near the border or transferred more serious patients into Israeli hospitals. http://www.timesofisrael.com/critically-injured-syrian-transferred-to-israeli-hospital/

Yes, we see incredible effort by many in the Global community to help with this devastating crisis, though there is one glaring exception this compassion. Where is the assistance of the wealthy Gulf States which share a language and religion with many of the asylum seekers. Here is an interesting article that identifies how many people each country is helping including Zeros for all of these countries:

Saudi Arabia: 0
United Arab Emirates: 0
Kuwait: 0
Qatar: 0
Bahrain: 0

http://www.cnn.com/2015/09/09/world/welcome-syrian-refugees-countries/index.html

One less worry
With Syria in shambles and Daesh (self proclaimed ISIS) on the doorstep taking over many of its major cities, isn’t it nice to know Syria doesn’t have a nuclear reactor which could fall into evil hands.  8 years ago this week (Sept. 7, 2007), the Israel Defense Forces destroyed the Syrian reactor based on theBegin Doctrine stating that no enemy of Israel’s should possess nuclear weapons. Iraq’s nuclear efforts were also eliminated based on this doctrine   while Iran certainly fits the bill as well, but time will tell on that front.
Back to Work
Speaking of Iran’s nuclear ambitions, Congress has returned from its Summer vacation and conversation on the Floor will include two important issues…The Iran Deal and the Government budget, specifically what should and shouldn’t be funded. Though many legislative voices continue to debate this (done) Iran Deal, most comprehend that it will progress forward with much scrutiny. We were extremely disappointed that Senator Gary Peters decided to approve the deal even though he understands it’s serious pitfalls. For example, Iran has again voiced it commitment to end the existence of Israel with this week’s actual statement “I’d say (to Israel) that they will not see (the end) of these 25 years.” http://www.cnn.com/2015/09/10/middleeast/iran-khamenei-israel-will-not-exist-25-years/index.html This is serious Sh*t that is constantly repeated and should not be ignored. Once the deal is in progress, every step and breath of Iran’s future will need to be microscoped and evaluated to prevent or punish offensive actions.

Chopping Block

And analyst predict the possible government shutdown on Oct. 1st because Congress is behind the 8-ball on passing several spending bills.  If we can learn from history, extension will be issued and hopefully with a bit more time, they will come to a consensus (a rare word in DC) and do what’s right for their constituency. But of course, the much demonized Planned Parenthood is always on the chopping block and with the recent bogus undercover videos to fuel their fire, conservatives are chomping at the bit to defund the lifesaving efforts of this valued national organization.
Religious Influence
My favorite Pope (Francis) will be visiting our Nation this month as his resume continues to build with Humane and Progressive initiatives regarding Climate Change (a global problem blaming apathy and greed),  Abortions (granting forgiveness), Divorce (easing annulments) and Homosexuality (“who am I to judge”).  May the Pope’s visit to the United States strike a chord with all Americans and encourage closed minded religious based activist (like our “dear” Kentucky clerk) to ask themselves “what would the Pope do” in their situation. And speaking of (no name, no fame) Kentucky clerk, it is disgraceful and insulting that her lawyer is comparing her treatment (during this fame seeking spectacle), to Jews during the Nazi era.
http://www.haaretz.com/news/world/1.674760 And to continue this comparrison game, her supporters asked why Mayor Gavin Newson of San Fransicso was not jailed when (in the reverse) he issued gay marriage license before they were legal back in 2004.  After 4,000 marriages, the case made it through the California Supreme Court which ordered him to stop, which he did. There is more detail in this is a very interesting article and (btw) bravo to Mayor Newson:

Decrease the Stigma

About 1 Million people each year die in our world from suicide. Returning United States Veteran rates are rapidly increasing.   September is Suicide Prevention Month; a month (though all month/days matter) designated to raise awareness of education, destigmatize mental illness and help decrease our raising rates. https://www.iasp.info/wspd/
Sandstorm and Sweets
I’m sure it’s not symbolic of anything, but a record breaking sandstorm covered the middle east (including all of Israel) this week which brought high temps and high pollution to the country.  Israelis were encouraged to stay indoors and avoid outdoor physical activity. The sandy air is expected to subside prior to Sunday evening’s holiday but the heat will stick around to melt the honey on those dipped apples. http://www.timesofisrael.com/israelis-break-power-record-as-sandstorm-persists-into-third-day/
Speaking of Holiday Treats, here’s one that will take your sweet tooth for a wide ride: http://www.kveller.com/recipe-sweet-fried-noodle-kugel-balls/

The Late Show
Though I missed watching it Tuesday night, I picked up bits and pieces via the internet and heard David Bianculli (from Fresh Air) praising the glories ofStephen Colbert‘s premiere episode.  I never doubted his ability to bring his vibrant brilliant repartee to CBS latenight. He shed his Conservative Narcissist persona and exposed his talented self to satisfied viewers.  Here is the closing musical moments with a variety of performers, including Stephen himself, singing Sly and the Family Stone’s hit “Everyday People”:
Wishing you and your loved ones a Peaceful Shabbat Shalom and a Sweet Shana Tova.

Shabbat Shalom September 11, 2015

Shabbat Shalom September 4, 2015

Shabbat Shalom
September 4, 2015
Dear family and friends,
Our Nest
Our 4th and final baby “bird” emptied the nest this week as we delivered Aviv to George Washington University in DC. Looking back to Sept. 3rd 1986, our brand new nest accepted the arrival of our first baby, Ariella, whose first baby, Hadassa, experienced her first sleepover (last night) at our house exactly 29 years later to continue the circle of life.
Saving Lives
A combination of excessive money by lobbyist, stubbornness, backward thinking and our country’s addiction to guns continues to rocket our ranks in gun deaths throughout the world. We should be ashamed of the number of gun-related stats in our country… number of mass murders (90), number of guns in the US (est. 400 million), number of stolen guns per year (500,000), number of suicides by guns (21,000).  There are so many issues to discuss regarding guns and every time another mass murder (4 or more people are shot) the conversation heats up and then nothing is done. But, just considering the suicide rate of gun deaths should slap us into action. Half of all suicides are committed by guns and if access to guns were limited like every other country, our suicide rate would drastically decline.  When Israel changed it’s policy to prohibit soldiers from taking their guns home, the gun related suicides significantly dropped.
Our veteran population is at serious risk of suicide and easy access to firearms upon their return home is proving deadly.
And how do we keep our children safe if the NRA prevents doctors from asking about guns in their homes during regular check-up visits.
Even with all that said, we truly do live in a wonderful society (yet Democracy is messy), but we need to concentrate on societal issues that will improve the quality of life for all citizens.
Home Sweet Home
A sense of appreciation for our own homes is enhanced as we watch the desperation of refugees (Syrians to Western Europe, South Americans to United States…) from their war torn and devastated countries just trying to reach a sanctuary for their families. Last week a truck was found in Austria, filled with over 70 refugees (children included) who suffocated to death.  Building walls (Mr. Trump) and barbed wire fences (Hungary) is not the solution to this Humane problem. John Lennon imagining ” there’s no country” is also not the answer but trying to figure out a reasonable responsible resolution requires global thinking of outside the box.
Israel, too, has to deal with an illegal immigrant issue as 50,000 Africans have crossed into her southern border in the last several years to seek asylum.  Most have been detained in the southern region of the Negev. The only suitable solutions to our global immigration problem is a drastic regime change for those war-torn countries which is, sadly, not likely in the near (or far) future.
Israel’s Hope
But returning to the John Lennon’s song and with Imagine in the background, check out this straightforward explanation of Israel’s historical reality and ever present Hope (Hatikva) for the future: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2uGrIaZqr0  and then then view these truthly and impassioned words of all Israelis https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjd28kdN88I
The Great 49th
Next let’s travel from the southern heat of the Negev to the northern chill of the Alaskan arctic, where Obama is making his maiden presidential visit to our 49th State. His first order of business was to restore the name of Mount Mckinley to its original and more appropriate name of Denali as it sits amidst the beauty of Denali National Park. To give some perspective to this narrative, Mount McKinley was names in 1917 by a gold prospector in Alaska after learning of Mckinley’s republican nomination. McKinley never made it to Alaska. Since 1975 to the present, Alaskans and Ohioans (Home of McKinley) have been feuding over the name and many don’t believe Obama has the executive “right” to make this change. Either way, Canton, Ohio is thrilled about the nations discussion of their favorite son and is hoping for an uptick in visits to the Canton home of McKinley’s legacy.
The Mountain formerly known McKinley
Conservation
But the real reason for Obama’s visit to the Arctic Circle is over environmental concerns.  As a Zoo board member concerned about animal conservation and a supporter of the League of Conservation Voters, I applaud this visit and hope it brings more support in helping to reverse our man-made climate affecting mistakes that have accelerated the damage to our one and only home. Some people still don’t believe in man-made climate change even with the overwhelling scientific evidence http://climate.nasa.gov/evidence/ .  So, if they are right…then wonderful, we continue our lives on this beautiful planet.  But, if they are wrong, then the consequences are detrimental and life for our descendants could be in serious jeopardy.  Are the deniers so confident they are right that they are willing to sacrifice future generations for their immediate gluttony? Taking steps to clean our planet benefits everyone (right now) regardless if our current actions are or aren’t killing our planet. Why would anyone take a chance on this vital issue.
Here is some music for our conservation souls:
In Contempt
Closed-minded religious brainwashed hatred is rearing it ugly head in Kentucky as a county clerk defied national law by refusing to provide gay couple marriage licences.  This clerk should resign if she refuses to fulfill her responsibilities based on her religious belief (which the Pope even says “who is he to judge”). Since this clerk is an elected official, she will need to either, be impeached or resign and I’m not sure if either are in her near future.  She was found in contempt of court and was sentenced to jail which the plaintiffs were against since now she’ll fulfill the martyrdom role as sadly there are too many who stand by her side. By the way, I refuse to print her name as she doesn’t deserve “fame”.
Also in Contempt…
Is our Congress for always trying to defund Planned Parenthood with ridiculous attempts to connect it to a government shutdown which thankfully doesn’t have the stamina this time.  But if we need to cut funding somewhere, how about slashing a few of these Pork Barrel items. FYI, the one about 6.5 million people over age 112 with current SS number is a bit misleading as only a few continue to get SS checks.  But the message that other items in our budget are more worthy of cutting than Women’s Health Services is clearly valid.
Done Deal
The deal is done as the minimum (needed) 34 democratic senators have committed to voting in favor of the Iran Deal so the President has veto proof to move forward.  Most agree that Israel will now need extra defensive equipment to prevent the wrath of Iran once it gains access to $$ and Ammunition. I hope and pray those of us who felt this deal was not the “pathway to peace” will be proven wrong, but sadly I think much tzuris (extreme trouble) will come out of this deal with the devil.
Rest in Peace
The brilliant storyteller and scientist, Dr. Oliver Sacks z”l passed away this week.  He told the stories of those afflicted by serious neurological conditions but here is the touching and meaningful story of his life (in his own words). His life starts in an orthodox family yet progresses away from religion as he finds it a contradiction to his gay lifestyle. This poignant life story crosses decades and countries with the central theme of his memories and prominence of Shabbat.

Happy 60th birthday (today) to talented dear friend David Broza. He is an icon of Israeli (Spanish/English/Arabic…) music, a Peacemaker, a Bridge builder and a truly kind human being. Hope you enjoy this incredibly meaningful and beautiful version of  East Jerusalem/West Jerusalem performed byDavid and Wyclef Jeanhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSU5YxIkyko
Happy 70th birthday (Aug. 31st) to talented (wish we were friends) Itzhak Perlman.  A few months ago Itzhak was the surprise guest at one of Billy Joel‘s monthly Madison Square Garden concerts.  What a delight it must have been to have seen them together performing “Downeaster Alexa”, but here’s the next best thing.  Hope you enjoy. If you are in a hurry, you can fast forward a bit to minute 2.
Wishing you and your loved ones a Sweet and Peaceful Shabbat Shalom and a pleasant Labor Day weekend.

Shabbat Shalom September 4, 2015

Shabbat Shalom Aug. 28, 2015

Shabbat Shalom
August 28, 2015
Dear family and friends,
Many of you seem to enjoy my musical references describing each paragraph, so I have included them again this week and added the musical source at the end of the page to test your knowledge.
Hope you enjoy…
1. “If I had a million dollars…”
I might think twice about stock sales or purchases right now, as Black Monday started the week and progressed to Turnaround Tuesday till the vacillation normalized bringing relief to investors worldwide.  China, though (the 2nd largest economy after the U.S.) will take time to stabilized after its Interest Rate Slashing. But the world will continue to monitor the Chinese leadership’s handling of their volatile marketplace.
2. “He’s leaving, leaving on that midnight train…”
Several people sprung to action to prevent disaster and death on a train last week traveling from Amsterdam to Paris. A French/American made the first attempt but was wounded in the neck. Then three Americans and a Brit scrambled to subdue the terrorist who was wielding guns and a knife. Miraculously, no one died and after the terrorist was hogtied, one of the Americans jumped into his medic role to triage the neck wound of the first victim.  The scene must have resembled a Hollywood movie set yet with read blood. Honors and awards are bestoned upon the heros and hopefully the book will be thrown at the terrorist.
Heros with French President Hollande
3. “Helter Skelter”
Horror and disgust can’t even describe the despicable (on camera) execution that took place in Virginia this week when a crazed gunman (ex-employee of the TV station) shot and killed two young journalists while filming an interview. Violent and erratic behavior coupled with anger ended two innocent lives and revenge could have been a motive as the killer posted a manifesto referring to his outrage of the Charleston Church killings. After a manhunt to capture the crazed fugitive, he crashed his car and shot himself. As the gun violent death toll continues to rise (much more than any other country), should easy access to firearms remain a staple for our American diet?
4. “Did you ever have to make up your mind…”
We are constantly barraged in the press with anti-Israel messages of how the country is evil, racist and unjust, but how about the hidden stories that don’t get published like when Israel-critics take a look for themselves and often shatters their preconceived notions.  I have two such examples of these epiphanies.  One is from the Tel Aviv University valedictorian who happens to be Egyptian and the other is from a pro-Palestinian activist from Sweden.
Viewpoint of an Egyptian:
Viewpoint of a Swede:
5. “Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound…”
After trying to ban Jewish reggae artist, Matisyahu from the Spanish music festival last week, he seems to have gotten the last word (message) after receiving an apology and a re-invited to perform, which he did…  His message of Peace included this beautiful rendition of Jerusalem with lyrics from Psalms 137:5 “Jerusalem, if I forget you, let my right arm forget what its suppose to do”.  Jerusalem is currently a shared city (under Israel’s juridiction).  Muslims, Jews, Christian all pray peacefully at their respective holy sites yet not too long ago, Jews were forbidden to enter our holiest site (our ancient Temple) when others controlled the Sacred City.
6. “I can see clearly now…”
A glossy view was brought to the Old Michigan Central Train Station as the Moroun family installed sparkling new windows and they might even use part of the building for their trucking transportation business.  The building sure cleans up nicely. Though there is much work and money needed to bring the beauty back to its old glory, current effort in the right direction are very encouraging even if the new windows don’t match the original architecture. http://tinyurl.com/ptyfdcz
Clean interior of Old Michigan Central Station
7. “I been in the right place,
but must have been the wrong time…”
This week marks the 10th anniversary of the devastating  Hurricane Katrina that decimated New Orleans and the surrounding area of the Gulf Coast.  Nature and Man are to blame for the destruction.  100,000 people were displaced and $100 Billions of damages were incurred. Even 10 years later the area is still rebuilding and renovating.  Let’s hope many lessons were learned from this catastrophe so the nearly 2,000 lives lost were not lost in vain.
New Orleans
8. “Don’t go chasing waterfalls…”
We all need some advice in our lives and who better to ask than our elders.  But who is an elder?  For a 6-year-old, it is someone who is 7.  For a teenager it is someone in their early 20s…and so on. With this in mind, check out the meaningful advice dished out to those just a bit younger than these “elders” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sycgL3Qg_Ak
9. “Anybody here seen my old friend Abraham?”
Even though Jon Stewart is no longer part of our daily dose of consumption, this doesn’t mean Out of Sight Out of Mind”. Over 300,000 people have signed a petition to request he host an upcoming presidential debate, and I wholeheartedly agree. Can you imagine the fireworks between Trump and Stewart. http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/08/27/why-jon-stewart-must-host-the-2016-presidential-debates.html
10. “It’s a world of laughter, a world of tears
It’s a world of hopes, a world of fear”
Anti-Israel sentiment seem to seep into all aspect of our Global community including the provocative new display in the UK by graffiti artist Banksy who commissioned a dismal reflection of society called Dismaland.  Bravo to the organizers as they ousted a Palestinian artist who covered his own art with a bed sheet and scrolled “RIP Gaza: Boycott Israel” to protest Israel’s inclusion at the exhibition.  The Artist is gone but his work still remains. http://www.timesofisrael.com/palestinian-booted-from-banksys-dismaland-for-anti-israel-protest/
11. “Find me in my field of grass, Mother Nature’s son”
I love Ice Cream and our Planet and this video by Ben and Jerry describes what happens when they both heat up just 2 degrees. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80NLPNHpm0k
12. “The secret of life is enjoying the passage of time”
If you want an in depth understanding of James Taylor‘s life described through the meanings of 15 favorite songs, check out this site to read about some of the issues and demons he’s lived through while creating classic tune and messages for us to enjoy. http://www.rollingstone.com/music/lists/james-taylor-my-life-in-15-songs-20150820/rainy-day-man-1967-20150820
13. “A child arrived just the other day…”
Last week I included the sweet tunes of our daughter, Liat and her new band, Lake Toba and this week’s musical selection is from another local offspring, son of Sandi and Claude Reitelman.  Hope you enjoy the talents of Lee Reit‘s new video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CT2snxt3K0
Wishing you and your loved ones a Sweet and Peaceful Shabbat!
Lisa

Dear family and friends,
“Teach your children well…” Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
As the volume increases of those scary childhood words, “Back to School”, wouldn’t it be nice if the much talked about Core Curriculum included courses to Teach Peace, Parenthood and other important adult life lessons. But we are one step behind since, this school year, attracting quality teachers for our overcrowded schools is stressed to the limit. Our nation is in the midst of a Teacher Shortage due to the layoffs during the 2008 recession. And the equation of High Student Loans and Low Teacher Pay complicates efforts in hiring qualified people for one of the most important jobs of our society. http://tinyurl.com/plqspjy
This humorous video is…“Dedicated to the amazing teachers who take care of our kids all year and don’t make enough money”. Enjoy (last year’s) back to school hip-hop rap by the (oh so) adorable Holderness Family
“Everyone Jump on the Peace Train…” Cat Stevens
Emagine if Peace Courses were a requirement for international curricula. Take note, United Nations, on a truly meaningful mission for your next agenda.  Terror attacks like the ones Thailand experienced this week could be obsolete, but sadly, 20 people died and over 100 were injured.  Those who really need a lesson in respect and understanding are the crazies connected to Daesh (they like to be called Islamic State, so I never refer to them by their prefered name). Daesh has taken control of 3/4 of Syria including a famous ancient city housing valuable artifacts and antiquities. The renowned 82 year old archeologist, Khaled al-Asaad, “held the key” to its treasures and for keeping this info from the evil monsters, he was beheaded, mutilated and displayed for other “traitors” to see.http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/aug/18/isis-beheads-archaeologist-syria
“You’ve got to change your evil ways, baby…”Santana
How can any human being act so inhumanely?  Who is teaching these evil lessons and why are young westerners joining their forces? This story of 3 young UK girls just confounds me: http://tinyurl.com/DaeshLureGirls.  Yet while a handful of brainwashed souls are headed to Syria, 6.5 million Syrians have been displaced while 3 million are refugees in neighboring countries, many headed to Europe. Will those much needed Lesson of Peace commence in our lifetime or even in this millennium?  On a lighter connected note,
I’m not sure if any of you are watching the new HBO show, The Brink (with Tim Robbins and Jack Black), but it is funny, irreverant and satariclly mirrors the crazy world we live in. http://www.hbo.com/the-brink
“Because it’s always been a matter of trust…” Billy Joel
This week’s update on the Iran deal includes a partner for Schumer and some inspection news.  Senator Robert Menendez joined the now Pack of Two Democratic Senators to oppose the Iran deal.  The congress is several weeks away from their vote with many legislators still seriously conflicted with their choice.  Again, much thanks to their efforts in trying to make the right decision for this seemingly “lose, lose” situation.  The other news is that supposedly Iran will self-inspect one of their sites though the accuracy of this concern and extent (of self inspection) needs more investigation. Either way, the big question is can we truly trust Iran…?

“Songs in the Key of Life” Stevie Wonder
(yes, ironic for this paragraph)
International bias, anti-semitism, anti-Israel (however it’s labeled), displayed its evil side this week as the organizers of the Spanish Music Festival, Rototom Sunsplash, cancelled (Jewish) Reggae superstar, Matisyahu from its lineup because he wouldn’t sign a political BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanction) statement against Israel. The BDS movement, withRoger Waters as its lighting rod, has been successful at persuading (some) artist to boycott Israeli stages, but this is their first attempt at extending their reach to a global stage. Matisyahu was singled out because he is Jewish (he’s not Israeli) as no other artist was asked to sign a statement. Though some musicians of the festival also wanted him off the stage since he “represents” Israel because he is Jewish and supports the country. Their attempt failed as the Spanish Government loudly objected and forced the festival organizers to apologize and re-invite Matisyahu back. No word yet whether he will accept.  By the way, bravo to the many performers who don’t succumb to the BDS pressure, like Kanye West(performing in Tel Aviv this month), Paul McCartney, Billy Joel, Rihanna, Alicia Keys, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Red Hot Chilli Pepers and Tom Jones.  But there are still some who refuse to play and abide by the boycott.  They include Elvis Costello (though his wife Diana Krall did play there), Jon Bon Jovi, Annie Lennox and Stevie Wonder. The BDS movement accuses Israel of being an apartheid state as seen in this Spanish poster below. Many South Africans have come to Israel’s defense to pronounce that she is far from an apartheid state and proclaiming it diminishes the true meaning of apartheid and the struggles that South Africa endured.  As mentioned many times in these messages, Israel is flawed (like all nations) but clearly more democratic than most as her Arab population is represented in all streams of society included her Supreme Court.
“Yesterday South Africa, Today Palestine
Sanctions on Israel!”
“I write the songs that make the whole world sing…”
Barry Manilow
Speaking of one of my favorite topics, music, have you ever tried to list the top 100 songwriters of all time? Who do you think is # 1, think Robert Zimmerman.  Where do Paul and John fit?  Who made the top 10 list? Smokey, Stevie, Carole… If this info interests you, here is the complete Rolling Stone list with commentary. I first scrolled to the bottom of the list to view the top 10 and cruised past Taylor Swift at spot 97. Where do your favorite artist rank? Hope you enjoy this comprehensive (though debatable) compilation.

“You are the apple of my eye…” Stevie Wonder

Though Hannan is an avid/amature guitarist, our daughter, Liat, has taken her musical banjo/guitar skills one step further and formed a new band, with friend, Kyle McGonegle, called Lake Toba which they describe as a lyrical old-timey duo. Here are a few of their songs:
Liat and Kyle
Lake Toba
“Blackbird Singing in the Dead of Night” Paul McCartney
Near the year anniversary of the pivotal Ferguson incident that brought Black Lives Matter to the forefront of our bias county, is not the time for the creative and provocative Key and Peeleto end their satirical outlook on our flawed society. Early next month, the Key & Peele show will culminate its 3rd and final season on the Comedy Network.  Here is one of their last skits; a provocative view of our bias society. Beware, it is uncensored: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rg58d8opQKA
“Chicken Soup with Rice” Carole King
As our Jewish New Year of Rosh Hashana approaches, I thought it would be helpful to include this comedical yet inspirational and instructional demonstration of a genuine Balabusta (cousin to Zero Mostel) preparing Matzah Soup for a sweet Italian foodie, Mo Rocca.
Wishing you and your loved ones a
Sweet and Peaceful Shabbat Shalom.

Bravo to Mitch Albom on his Charity Profit Producing DetroitWater Ice Factory (we visited last weekend) where he has brought favorite childhood treat to Detroit with proceeds benefitting his Detroit Charities.  Thanks also to Jimmy Ketai/Bedrock for their location assistance at Campus Martius. http://detroitwaterice.com/
Bravo to Doron Levin on his new XM Radio show “In the Driver’s Seat” focusing on everything car related, including his first guest, Mary Barra.
Condolences to the Tyner family on the passing of Herbert Tyner z”l. Herb was a community leader and the husband of 60 years to Suzanne, the father of Deborah Tyner and Rick Herman, Cynthia Dobbins, Karen and Douglas Rouff and David and Gael Tyner.  May his memory, spirit and contributions to our community bring comfort to all who loved and respected him.
Rest in Peace Julian Bond (age 75), respected Civil Rights Leader, Georgia State Legislator, Chairman of the NAACP, Professor, Writer and one of the founders of the prestigious Southern Law Poverty Law Center.  His societal contributions are extraordinary and heroic. Please take note, some feel this NY Times obit mistaken referred to his great grandmother as a Slave Mistress, as being a slave precludes you from being a consensual mistress. The Times admitted their mistake.
On Aug. 26th, we remember son (of Randy and Diane), brother (of Amanda and Sam), grandson and dear friend to many, George A. Orley z”l on the two year anniversary of his passing. May his soul and spirit continue to give us strength in our efforts at improving our world.
