Shabbat Shalom
September 12, 2014
Dear family and friends,
Year 13
As we commemorate the 13th anniversary of the horrific 9/11 terrorist attack that (within a few minutes) killed nearly 3,000 innocent people, we must keep vigilant and prepared to continue our global fight against those warped fundamentalist who’s main goal is to establish a homogeneous restrictive community where freedoms are deprived and life is limited. Though we might have an ocean as our buffer, Israel lives with these evil terrorist as her neighbors. Yet lately their extreme ideals are spreading to both Americans and Europeans as hundreds are known to be fighting on their behalf in Syria and Iraq. And now, (130) Canadians have joined this ruthless bandwagon.
May the souls of those who perished on 9/11 and all those who’ve lost their lives to terrorism be the spirit and strength to help combat the evil forces of Islamic Radicalization.

Ugly Monster
Domestic abuse was brought to the forefront of our country’s consciousness this week, though (sadly) it is always present in the back bedrooms, hall closets or elevator cars of our country’s hidden spaces. Many of these abuse victims stay with and defend their abusers, like this week’s famous case. The CDC reports that 1 in 4 women are abused in our society. This US statistic is startling and outrageous.  We need to do a better job educating and protecting those susceptible to this horrible cycle of violence. Not surprisingly, there are 20 countries that don’t even have laws preventing domestic violence, including many you would expect, like Yemen, Iran, Syria…and these:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/03/08/countries-no-domestic-violence-law_n_4918784.html  While at this week’s Lion of Judah conference, we saw a presentation about an incredible documentary which shines light on the “honor” abuse of Muslim women. This film was written and produced by a young Jewish Human Rights attorney, Paula Kweskin, who bravely sought to spotlight the extreme abuse through the lens and stories of (only a few) of the millions of victims of this religious sponsored violence.  http://www.honordiaries.com/  The world needs to see this film.  Many in our community have brought awareness to its importance.  Bravo to Leora Bar-Levav for spearheading this effort.
The IS Fight is on
President Obama, this week, unveiled his plan (with a wide coalition) to help eradicate the radical extremist of the Islamic State. This fight will (unfortunately) continue well beyond his presidency as he was hoping his foreign policy legacy would have been the killing of Bin Laden and ending the Iraq and Afghanistan wars though more fighting seems to have been thrusted upon him. This wide coalition consists of the Big 10major countries including U.S., U.K., Germany, France, Italy, Denmark, Poland, Canada, Australia and the strategically located Turkey as well as 40 others (including 10 Arab nations) who are willing to help. Globally, there is a strong interest to suppress these evil forces and for the sake of our future this coalition must succeed.
Secession
Internationally speaking, the inter-connected Quad-Countries of the UK (England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland) COULD become less connected next week when Scotlandvotes to secede from their Union. The polls indicate the race is neck and neck with the outcome up in the air, though I assume it won’t pass. But, now, other countries have been emboldened to attempt the same fate.  For example, Catalonia has longed to disconnect from Spain and will this inspire Quebec to try again to separate from Canada?  Even the Yuppers in our ownUpper Peninsula wanted to become the 51st State and separate from Michigan which would have sadly relinquished some beautiful territory from our State.
Scotland, part of the UK since 1707
Hamas Fools
I am truly in AWE of Ari Lesser who is one of the finest educators of the Middle East situation through his poetic songs which illuminate the TRUTH in articulate and balanced terms. Check out his newest song regarding Hamas.
Bridge Building
Another VERY creative and talented soul is David Broza who has just launched an Indiegogo campaign to help fund his film documenting the production of his latest album: East Jerusalem-West Jerusalem.  By being part of this project you too can help build the bridges to create a lasting Peace.  You can read more about this initiative and contribute at:
Making Progress
There is light at the end of our Detroit Bankruptcy tunnel as a settlement is in the works between (creditor) Syncora and our City.  The trial is on hold till next week so the parties can get their ducks in order.  This is good news and one step closer as our Phoenix shakes off the debt-fill dust and starts to rise.
Love – Love
Congrats to Marin Cilic (Croatia) winning (6/3,6/3,6/3) in the men’s finals and Serena Williams (who didn’t drop a set in the whole tournament) and won her 18th (chai) Grand Slam Singles Title at this year’s US Open (which I joyfully attended for the first time).
Serena joined by other 18-time winners Martina and Chrissy, though Steffi takes the cake with 22 Grand Slams.
Bigger is better
Apple introduced it new iPhone 6 and 6+ but if you plan to buy one yourself, you might jump in line now as Apple expects to sell out within days of their Sept. 19th availability date. Personally, we converted to Samsung a year ago and love the larger size so I can see the appeal.
Ridiculous
Yale Chaplain Rev. Bruce Shipman wrote a response in the NY Times to Deborah Lipstadt‘s op-ed about the rise of Anti-semitism, where he blames the cause of anti-semitism on the diaspora Jews for not urging Israel to restrain from their defensive actions in Gaza and find a solution to the Palestinian situation. Anti-semitism and all racism warrant absolutely NO excuse as his bigoted remarks resulted in his self resignation and apology.

Our Right and Responsibility
Election day is only 7 1/2 weeks away.  Please educate yourselves on your choices.  In my opinion, Gary Peters is, hands down, the wisest choice to represent us in our United States Senate.  And to confirm my opinion, here is more evidence from US World and News Reports:
Women who support Gary are encouraged to join the Team at this website.
I joined; I hope you will too.

If you are unable to make it to the polls on Nov. 4th, please make arrangements to vote absentee. Here is the Michigan info you’ll need: http://www.michigan.gov/sos/0,4670,7-127-1633_8716_8728-21037–,00.html and new for this year in Michigan, you can request your absentee ballot on your smartphone: http://www.eclectablog.com/2014/09/michigan-dems-make-major-move-to-increase-michiganders-access-to-the-ballot-through-online-absentee-ballot-application.html
For other States, you can contact the county clerks office in your city.
The Mighty $
There is just TOO much money being spent on candidates during our election cycle.  The field should be level and unburdened of excessive financial contribution.  An amendment to overturn Citizens United was filibustered this week preventing campaign finance reform.  Efforts need to continue to rightsize our wasteful campaign structure.
“Run, Forrest, Run”
My two all-time top favorite films are The Big Chill and Forrest Gump, both with incredible music.  For the 20th anniversary of Forrest Gump, the soundtrack of 32 songs will be released on a 3 (vinyl) LP album (stands for Long Playing, for those of you born post-album era). And the film was re-released for IMAX theaters this past week. http://tinyurl.com/ForrestGump20th
Palindrome Year 5775
As our Jewish New Year of 5775 is quickly approaching (just 12 days away), I’d like to take this opportunity to wish all of you aSweet, Healthy and Peaceful Rosh Hashana.  May the new year bring healing to the ill, relief from the suffering and comfort to the downtrodden.  As I was searching for an upbeat Rosh Hashana music video to include in this week’s message, I stumbled upon comedian Elon Gold‘s “rant” of our Jewish New Year.  If you remember, I mentioned Elon a few week’s ago after he and his family were harassed and threatened while walking home from Shabbat dinner. Anyway, I find Elon hilarious and hope you do too. Beware as it is slightly racey:

Wishing you and your loved ones a Sweet and Peaceful Shabbat Shalom and a Happy New Year,

Lisa

Dear family and friends,
Too Rapid
As the precious Summer weeks between Memorial Day and Labor Day have come to an end (too quickly, mind you) and kids have returned to school, it is time to focus on our Community’s Autumn issues like the Detroit Grand Bargain Trial, the Nov. 4th election and of course our High Holidays, only 3 weeks away.
back to school
(yes, this cartoon is a repeat from the past)
Rapid Recovery
Detroit’s Bankruptcy trial commenced this past Tuesday to determine if the proposed plan is fair to all parties.  As you remember, our great city was $18 billion in debt and in my humble opinion, the architects of the Grand Bargain deserve kudos for their efforts to help rightsize our city. There has been $816 million committed over 20 years by our State, various non-profits and DIA donors to protect our City’s Art and Pension Funds.  Most like this offer however some creditors feel it is unfair to them.  Both sides (supporters and rejectors of the plan) have 85 hours to present their case to the judge. There are several outcomes that can occur plus the opportunity is still on the table for the City and the Creditors to negotiate a settlement.  With respectable leaders finally at our City’s helm, it is time to Rebuild, Renew and Restructure our metropolis. Innovation is all around Detroit as evidence of these 6 Sept. events:
GOTV
Unless you live as a hermit in a cave with no access to civilization, this might be a good time to start educating yourself on our upcoming Nov. 4th election (only 8 weeks away). We, in Michigan, will be voting for our Governor, US Senator, several US Congressional Seats, vacancies in our MI Congress, MI Attorney General, MI Supreme Court and several ballot proposals. I will continue to research the issues and candidates and convey my (respectfully provided) opinion to help you with this important process.  We (in this country and state) have a disgraceful tendency to skip our privilege and responsibility to vote so I encourage you to help alter that phenomenon and encourage all you know to GOTV (Get Out The Vote).
Healthy Debate
Debates are an excellent tool for voters to garner vital information about candidates and their issues.  We have a very important US Senatorial race this November between Congressman Gary Peters and Terri Lynn Land.  Please sign this petition to help encourage a debate between these two opponents so we all have a better understanding of our choice for Senator.  This petition is from Congressman Peters’ campaign office as he has already agreed to 3 debates (Grand Rapids, East Lansing and Detroit) so your “signature” is to encourage Ms. Land to step up to the Mic and discuss her stance on the Michigan issues that concern all of us. http://www.petersformichigan.com/landing/debate-invitation/
Media’s Obsession
What is NOT debatable is the despicable global bias against Israel and the Jews. It is exhibited everyday at the UN as tiny Israel is lavished with the most amount of resolutions against it than any other country against the backdrop of Jew-hating demonstrations (often violent) which erupt all over the world whenever Israel “sneezes”. Did you know there are (on average) 40 AP reporters covering Israel (and the number grows larger when conflicts arise) and only a fraction of that number covering other regions, even though Israel’s population dwarfs every other country. Why the fascination with Israel and the Jews? Of course Israel is NOT perfect as no country is and of course she has made mistakes, like every country has. But the intense criticism she gets exceeds any normal attention any normal county should get…Why? This essay by Matti Friedman is well worth the read as it gives a great perspective of the media’s bias from an insiders point of view:
Totality of Evil
Here is an excellent analysis of the Totality of Evil common to the Nazis and Hamas.  Yair Lapid asks why more Jews of the Holocaust didn’t fight the Nazi Regime and reflects that they, like us today, just can’t comprehend the Totality of Evil that exhibits both in our history with the Nazis and today with Hamas. Yair Lapid was an Israeli broadcaster who is now a Knesset Member and his recent moving and emotional speech at a train platform in Germany is well worth the 15 minute viewing.
Barbarians
Condolences to the family of Steven Sotloff, who was brutally murdered by the Islamic State this week.  Steven was Jewish, with grandparents who were Holocaust Survivor and as an adult became an Israeli citizen after studying there. To protect Steven’s life while in captivity, his identity was hid yet sadly it didn’t matter in the end.
http://www.timesofisrael.com/steve-sotloff-beheaded-by-isis-militants-had-deep-roots-in-israel/ The demented minds of IS would like to see a Global Islamic Community living under Sharia Law.  These people along with their “friends” Boko Harem, Hamas, Al Qaeda, Hizbollah and the likes, must be stopped dead in their tracks from continuing their xenophobic, racist and horrific acts against humanity.  For more scary info on these people who want to catapult us back into the Middle Ages, check out this article: http://www.newrepublic.com/article/119259/isis-history-islamic-states-new-caliphate-syria-and-iraq.  Nato will be meeting in Wales this week to discuss this current world threat as well as the crisis in the Ukraine.  Godspeed to our World Leaders on their efforts to collectively address these tyrants.

“To live in the hearts left behind is not to die” – Thomas Campbell
Condolences to Mark and Margie Davidoff and their family on the passing of Mark’s father, Ronald Davidoff z”l.  May his memory, spirit and love bring comfort to those who mourn his passing.

She was abrasive, insulting, hilarious, hardworking, a proud Jew and ardent defender of Israel.  Her life was not easy as her career bounced from high to low and her personal life was devastated by the suicide of her husband.  Whether you loved her or hated her, she was a fixture in our American culture.   Rest in Peace, Joan Alexandra Molinsky z”l aka,Joan Rivers.  May you continue to bring laughter to those in your new audience.

Though Bernie Madoff destroyed many innocent families, it is also a tragedy that now both of the sons have died at an early age.  Andrew Madoff died this week at age 48 from cancer and his brother Mark took his life 4 years ago at the age of 46.  Both brothers turned their father in and maintained they were oblivious to the Ponzi Scheme of the Century.
Congrats!
Congrats…

Dear family and friends,
After two weeks of computer Hiatus, I may have overloaded this week’s Shabbat email with issues, concerns and opinions.  Sorry for the length but the content is all meaningful to me and I hope to you. To begin…

Breaking News
While on vacation, it seemed News was Breaking each day…Robin Williams, Ferguson Missouri, ISIS beheading, Metro Detroit Flooding, San Francisco Earthquake…not to mention sitting in the middle of the Hamas story.  While we were in Israel, two ceasefires were broken by Hamas rockets. Twice we needed to take cover as sirens blared in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Thank God for the Iron Dome yet it isn’t foolproof as the day we left a 4-year-old Israeli boy was killed in the south from a Hamas bombardment as his family was running for cover during the 10 second warning.  It is increasingly frustrating to read and listen to the inaccurate media coverage and the bias op-eds which seem to give license to Anti-Israel and Jew-Hating sediment and action. Just this week, a Jewish Comedian, Elon Gold, (who we’ve seen several times at Jewish Detroit fundraiser) was harassed while walking home from Shabbat dinner with his family.  A man yelled “Free Palestine” from his car and then jumped out and screamed “I hope your children die! Just like you are killing children in Gaza!” Here is Elon’s very poignant and articulate explanation of the frustrating and dangerous situation we live in. http://tinyurl.com/ElonGoldHateIncident
In Memory
Before I continue to reflect on this week’s news, I must commemorate the one year passing of our beloved George Austin Orley z”l,  son of Randy and Diane and brother to Amanda and Sam. His young life touched so many with his passion for Friends, Family, Food, Sports and Detroit.  His legacy lives on in all who loved him as his goodness is engrained in their souls. His Detroit commitment also continues with the George Orley Social Impact Award initiated at TechTown Detroit this Summer. May George’s spirit be blessed and at peace
 George A. Orley z”l
I give you this one thought to keep –
I am with you still – I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awake in the morning’s hush
I am the swift, uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not think of me as gone –
I am with you still – in each new dawn.
Going Viral
With 2.5 million participants all over the world from the famous to the unknown, raising nearly $90 million dollars (with more pouring in each day), surely the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is a HUGE success and epitomizes “going viral”.  How does something so simple latch on to our global community? This is an attribute to the power of Social Media with some minor manipulations by Facebook. First, as of December, you’ll notice that videos are on autoplay (meaning they start playing just as you scroll past them, piquing your interest). Also, Facebook knows if you watch lots of video they places them at the top of your feed and then of course its the old Chain Letter mentality which many can’t resist. For whatever the reason, ALS research could surely use this added boost of cash and awareness.  This disease is the most dreaded as our family saw the devastating effects while watching it ravage my step-father, Dr. Bill Ross. It steals all physical abilities while keeping your mind completely intact essentially placing you as a prisoner of your own body.  We are fortunate to have the brilliantDr. Eva Feldman (U of M Hospital) dedicating her efforts to finding a cure for ALS and with this injection of donations, hopefully her success will be accelerated. For more info on this issue, please click on this site: http://tinyurl.com/ALSCharity

ACA and Mental Health
On another medical topic, 1 in 5 Americans have been diagnosed with Mental Health concerns and bravo to the Affordable Care Act as it has expanded the much needed coverage to millions of people who previously were unable to get help. Under the ACA mental health treatment must be covered by Medicaid and all private plans. Though there are stumbling blocks, this emphasis is in the right direction and will help many desperate people.
Elephant in the Room
Not surprising, Jimmy Carter will be the keynote speaker at the51st Annual Convention of the Islamic Society of North America held this weekend at Cobo Hall in Detroit.  Carter is known to be very outspoken against US policies in the Middle East and is a major critic of Israel to the extent I would call him anti-Israel. Governer Synder will also be speaking at the conference. I searched the convention’s program and was not surprised to find the LACK of content to address the elephant in the room of speaking out against Islamic extremism. Here is their website, maybe you can find any reference to dealing with the takeover of their religion by Zealots. http://www.isna.net/annual-convention.html
BDS
The boycott movement may have just shot themselves in the foot with their protest of SodaSteam which employed nearly 1,000 Palestinians.  The company will move its headquarters to the Negev and possibly shut the West Bank factory though they say their decisions are solely based on the financial benefit of the company. http://www.haaretz.com/business/.premium-1.612799
Gaza
After 50 days of rocket attacks from Gaza, there appears to be a ceasefire that hopefully will take hold.  But where do we go from here?  Israeli children will return to school and deal with their emotional distress while Gazans will return to their destroyed homes and cities.  Who will fund the rebuild of Gaza? Qatar, the same entity which provided weaponry to attack Israel.
http://tinyurl.com/QatarHamas  But until Hamas is expelled from the area, there will NEVER be peace and the rockets will start up again. Take it from someone who was inside the Hamas. Check out Mosab Hassan Yousef’s (son of Hamas founder) powerful words: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KakxXN5Z-XI
History is destined to repeat itself unless drastic changes are made in the mindset of the Arabs.  Here is proof as this 1968 Wall Street Journal Op Ed is as relevant today as it was then.  The last two lines are the most powerful: http://tinyurl.com/OpEd1968
Bravo
The IDF should be commended for their admirable efforts these last 7 weeks (and last 66 years). Here is a beautiful tribute TO them and BY them of one of my favorite Leonard Cohen songs translated into Hebrew: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nt_zDQjkwY
Chabad Acts Kindness
Shabbat dinners were NOT interrupted even the night after the brutal murder and attack of the Mumbai Chabad Center in November of 2008 and continued throughout different locations in the city to this week when they reopened the Chabad Center which will continue their mission of exemplifying goodness and kindness through Jewish Programs.

Wonder Women
This week we celebrate National Women’s Equality Day as we commemorate the 19th Amendment which provided Women the privilege and responsibility to vote and contribute to our democratic process. If every woman took the time to vote, I’m sure the makeup and agenda of our congress would be more reflective of the true progressive majority of this nation.  Please help Get Out The Vote (GOTV especially among women, please help me on Sept. 14th, see below).  And speaking of women, this next photo is dedicated to the Victors of Breast Cancer.

Racism
Avenue Q had it right with their song “everybody’s a little racist” which is cute, funny and true:
But deadly when it comes to an all White Police force in a mainly Black community like Ferguson, MO. Sadly, Michael Brown‘s death caused riots which spotlighted the racial divide in our country.  Yes, I agree with Avenue Q and Nicholas Kristof in his op-ed this week on racism. Admitting the problem is Step One…how do we correct it?http://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/28/opinion/nicholas-kristof-is-everyone-a-little-bit-racist.html
Its never too late
Malala Yousafzai (the young activist shot by the Taliban for her efforts to bring education to the girls in her community) must be so proud of her mother as she is, now, learning to read and write.

Your Help is Needed

Again this year, Hannan and I will be co-chairing the Forgotten Harvest (Food rescuers and redistributers) Fundraiser (Spring 2015) with comedian Tim Allen.  Your assistance on the committee would be greatly appreciated. Our first committee meeting (with free lunch) will be Thursday Sept. 4th @ noon @ the Weight Watcher’s office building. Please reply back to this email if you’d like to help.

Flood Recovery

Wishing those who were affected by the damaging Floods that destroyed the basements of Oak Park and Huntington Woods a speedy recovery to their lives.

P.S. Music
Here are my music pics of the week.  Hope you enjoy:
The complete Musical History (amazing how they get all eras of music in one take):
Another version of “Happy” by Walk Off the Earth (really fun to watch these creative and talented artists):
Robin Williams – May this brilliant comic rest in peace as the illumination from his bright star continues to shine on our culture. His dear friend, Billy Crystal, “knocked it out of the park” with this beautiful tribute during the Emmys:
Howard “Tzvi” Sherizen z”l – We were in Israel when our friend, Howard died two weeks ago. May his memory, spirit and love be a blessing to his wife Nancy “Chana”, their children and extended family.
James Foley – May the senseless murder by the extreme evil zealots of ISIS shed light on all terrorist organization who wish to harm the democratic freedoms of our modern society.  May the current hostage, Steven Sotloff, be released safely as his mother pleads for his safety: http://time.com/3194684/steven-sotloff-mother-isis-video/
Richard Attenborough (age 90) – Acclaimed director of the epic film, Gandhi and famously portrayed Santa Claus in the classic movie, Miracle on 34th Street passed away this week.  May his film contributions be enjoyed by many generations to come.
Congrats!
Mazel Tov to Marcie and Rob Orley on the marriage last weekend of their son, Matthew to their new daughter-in-law,Samantha. May the new young couple be blessed with health, happiness, peace and prosperity.
Mazel Tov to Roz and Standford Blanck on this weekend’s wedding of their daughter, Lisa to her love, Peter. Wishing the beautiful couple a sweet and long lifetime together.

Shabbat Shalom from Tel Aviv
August 22, 2014
Dear family and friends,
As you read this week’s email (that I wrote two weeks ago), we are currently in Israel.  I assume (and hope) the world is still turning on its axis yet I’m sure it is also still in turmoil.  We spent 3 days in Iceland to view the wonders of nature and photos of proof will be included in next week’s email.  Until then, here are four interesting and interactive websites I’ve been saving for this writing hiatus.
10 Commandments
This first article is increasingly relevant as social media continues to invade (and sometimes eclipse) our lives.  These 10 Commandments of Social Media hit a home run as each one speaks to the importance of integrity with our internet interactions.  As the original 10 Commandments guide our lives I hope to these 10 bring light to our Social Media interplay.
50 States
This next site is an amazing indicator of our local dialect.  It was originally posted last year on the NYTimes website and got some many hits I think the site crashed.  It was extremely accurate when I took the test:

Potato – Potahto

20 Hits
As always, music is a staple and motivator in my life and the 60s was my childhood (age 0-9).  So, here is a website that combines the music of my childhood by selecting the best Summer hits of the 60s. Highlights are #4 rare footage of Little Stevie, #6 Hot Fun in the Summer, #7 Help, #12 very odd, #17 Archie, Betty, Veronica and gang, #19 for Jimmy K’s wife. Enjoy: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/pictures/20-biggest-songs-of-the-summer-the-1960s-20140702/14-little-eva-the-loco-motion-0270856

37 (mind-blowing) Facts
This last interactive website can keep you busy for hours especially if you love the Great Lakes of Michigan. You will find crazy amazing facts about these tremendous bodies of water.
Did you know an acronym for the Great Lakes is HOMES?
Congrats!
Mazel Tov Jeff Kaye and Danyelle Neuman on your wedding this weekend.
Glad we could help you celebrate!

Dear family and friends,
“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness.”– Mark Twain
This message resonates with me.  Meeting, greeting and eating with people of different backgrounds can help alleviate xenophobia and ideally lead to peace and coexistence. However, an open mind and heart, which is not imprisoned by extreme fundamentalism, is also necessary.
As you read this Shabbat message, Hannan and I will be experiencing Iceland for a few days and then heading to Israel.  I’ve pre-written these next two weeks as I will be on hiatus from my computer (though I can read your replies from my cell phone). Today’s message is something I’ve been planning to compile for awhile.  I’ve amassed several guest greeters through the years, so I am allowing these “friends” to repeat their greetings for this week:
Carole King & James Taylor (5/28/10)

Dear family and friends,
A Blip
Live, Love, Laugh your way through Life.  We are only here for a Blip and we don’t know when that blip will end.  Sadly, the end came (early) for the stepmom of our dear friend, Diane Orley (and her sisters) while Audrey Kaplan z”l (age 75) was hiking and mushroom hunting in Santa Fe, NM. As family members remarked, she was doing what she loved most in her last moments of life. Condolences to her husband Norman Kaplan and the whole family as they grieve the loss of their loved one.  May her memory, spirit and love of life bring comfort to those in mourning.  Sadly, just three weeks from now, we will also be commemorating the passing of her grandson, George A. Orley z”l.  May their spirits bring comfort to each other.

A Tribute
64 Israeli souls died during Israel’s latest War of Independence. They were young people who had their whole lives ahead of them while now their Mothers, Fathers, Sisters, Brothers, young spouses, fiancees and young children must go on without them.  To pay tribute to their lives, here are their first names and ages.  For photos and bios, please click on the article: Eitan 20, Amotz 45, Adar 20, Bar 21, Bnaya 20, Zvika 28, Oz 21, Zafrir 32, Gilad 21, Sean 21, Moshe 20, Tal 21, Max 24, Shachar 20, Daniel 20, Shon 19, Ben 19, Oren 22, Oded 22, Ohad 27, Nadav 23, Yuval 22, Jordan 22, Dmitri 26, Natan 23, Paz 22, Le 19, Shahar 20, Guy 21, Gal 21, Avraham 21, Roy 21, Liad 22, Aviatar 20, Barak 27, Yair 36, Amit 20, Guy 21, Dolev 38, Rami 39, Baynesain 39, Yval 21, Oron 21, Daniel 18, Barkey 21, Sagi 19, Dor 18, Moshe 20, Nadav 19, Eliav 22, Meidan 20, Niran 20, Adi 23, Matan 21, Omer 21 and Guy 20.
Supportive Voices
We are all SICK AND TIRED of listening to hateful rhetoric and lies about Jews and Israelis and until dor l’dor (generational) brainwashing of Anti-Semitism stops, we will endure the hatred for many years to come. BUT, there are some voices out there that know the truth of the (Peace-Loving, World-Healing) Jews and Israelis.  And many are from outside our own Jewish Community. Check out this amazing (positive) rant by this Egyptian doctor: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0m3RghOcFo#t=34
And this video from Tokyo where Hebrew songs and messages are sent from the Japanese locals: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1diJcpX_4m0 Even Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah, called the Hamas-Israel war in Gaza a “collective massacre” caused by Hamas. And Thank You U.S. House, Senate and Pres. Obama for this week’s Iron Dome Bill which provides $225 Million (additional) to strengthen and restock the system after its exceptional lifesaving performance.  And, Lastly, Thank You Jon Voight for speaking the truth against celebrity ignorance.
Unity
The one thing that is constant about this war is the unity of the most Israelis and (most) Jews.  Left, Right, Peaceniks, Hawk, Liberal, Ashkenazi, Sephardic, Conservative, Reform, Orthodox…all view the horror through a similar lens.  95% of Israeli agree this war was justified. That’s an amazing stat since most Israelis don’t agree on much (2 Jews, 3 opinions). Check out this interview with the left-winged, Peacenik and famous Israeli author, Amos Oz. He starts the interview with a powerful analogy: http://tinyurl.com/Amos-Oz-what-would-you-do And not all stories from the (American) Al Jazeera TV network are bias.  This well-spoken young solider clearly expressed the situation with first hand experience since he lost his arm in Gaza during the 2008 conflict:
Protection
Hamas’ deadly tactics against us are Rockets, Human Shields, Tunnels, crippling our airport traffic (which they succeeded in doing for 48 hour) and garnering world hatred toward us.  We have the Iron Dome to protects us from the rockets and hopefully we’ll develop technology to detect tunnels. But here is an amazing device that could protect airplanes from rocket attacks. I think some are already in use. This video seems a bit dramatized but it is real.
Politics
You win some, you lose some and then you run again. Congrats to the winners of our Michigan primary this week. Condolences to the losers, but my biggest commiseration goes to political donors who are stuck in this miserable campaign dollar sucking machine that is in desperate need of reform.
Music
Guess who’s new album is rising on the charts.  Yes, it’s Weird Al Yankovic newest creation, Mandatory Fun.  He seems to have longevity as he’s been a staple in our culture for decades.  Here’s 16 interesting things I bet you didn’t know about him. http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/16-things-we-learned-after-a-day-at-weird-al-yankovics-house-20140725  And along the same weird music theme, here is Israel’s reaction to the Hamas’ music video attempt to incite Palestinians living in Israel to attack their Jewish neighbors http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/183718#.U-JNXYBdVFX
Good Bye
Craig Fahle will missed from his daily Detroit morning show on WDET but kudos to his new career at the Detroit Land Bank Authority which help to eliminate blight from our city.

Wishing you and your loved ones a Sweet and Peaceful Shabbat,

Lisa

Shabbat Shalom August 1, 2014

Shabbat Shalom
August 1, 2014
Dear Friends and Family,

Tikvah Tuesday
The Jewish observance of Tisha B’Av is this Tuesday Aug. 5th*. It is a Fast Day (no food or drink) that commemorates the destruction of our 1st and 2nd Temples which occurred about 656 years apart but coincidentally on the same Hebrew calendar date of Tisha (9th) day of the month of Av.  At this moment it feels like our enemies want the history books to include another destruction of our “Temple” Israel but just as we’ve survived all past attempts we, too, will survive this one with continued hope (Tikvah) for Peace.

Tunnel of Terror
While we try to stop THEM from killing US, the UN Human Rights Council (this week) approved an investigation of Israel’s “war crimes” in Gaza and not surprising blames EVERYTHING on Israel (again and again…).  United States was the only country on the Council to vote against the inquisition with European counties abstaining.  http://www.latimes.com/opinion/op-ed/la-oe-wallance-gaza-unfair-un-resolution–20140729-story.html   If they insist on an investigation, maybe they should check out the cause of death of 160 children who died while building those Terror Tunnels. Where is the UN Human Rights Council’s or UNICEF’s or the world outrage of that atrocity.

Threatened Freedoms
Palestinians do deserve a State but it should be peacefully NEXT to ours, not IN PLACE of ours. But, for those who think this war is just a Middle East conflict involving Jews… it is not.  It is basically a conflict by those who abhor the Democratic Freedoms we hold near and dear.  this conflict has also emboldened Anti-Semitism to bubbling up in Europe.  This war is being waged all over the world. As an example, millions of dollars are being (quietly) paid to Al Qaeda and its affiliates to free kidnapped European hostages.
http://www.nytimes.com/2014/07/30/world/africa/ransoming-citizens-europe-becomes-al-qaedas-patron.html?_r=0

Groups like Al Qaeda, Taliban, ISIS, Hamas, Hezbollah, Boka Harem and their friends would like to eliminate democracy EVERYWHERE. Extremist on all sides are dangerous to our freedoms. Here is an extremist mother who’s son was treated in an Israeli hospital for a heart condition.  https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10204348730899301&fref=nf

But this is true too…

Shameful
Shame on the NRA spokesperson who criticized a Jewish businessman for supporting Gun Control by suggesting that gun policies were used by the Nazis against the Jews.
http://blogs.seattletimes.com/today/2014/07/jewish-federation-demands-resignation-of-nra-lobbyist/

Shameful
Shame on our Congress for wasting money and time on an absurd political stunt to sue our President for doing the job we democratically voted him in to do.

Reflections
Amid the tragic world events occurring this Summer, it is time to take a breather and reflect on our own daily lives.  We are here on Earth to Enjoy (ourselves) and Improve (our surroundings). Enjoyments like the warmth of Summer, hugs of grandchildren, health and well-being of family and friends, outdoor (James Taylor) concert, ice cream…deserve appreciation.  It’s also important to remember the other half of the “Enjoy and Improve” equation by helping those around us. Sometimes “doing good” is more enjoyable than even Ice Cream.

Music Makes Everything Better
To end this week on a beautiful note, here is the music of Sonna Rele and a messy haired Matisyahu singing a great new song called “Get Up”.  There’s a cute kid at the end. Is it Matisyahu’s son? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ngCcZPEsuc&feature=youtu.be

Dear Friends and Family,

Continued Distress
This week brings a continuation of our prayers and thoughts for Israel’s rapid and safe dismantle of Hamas’ Terror.  With the IDF’s ground incursion, the death toll is raising but when one side uses deceitful and ruthless tactics, no one wins. This message epitomizes the ideology of the region:

“Israel uses Weaponry to Protect civilians while Hamas uses civilians to protect weaponry”.  Israel HATES war while Hamas HATES Israel.  And for a small region, the conflict is getting top billing.  World opinion is either on one side or the other with pockets of violent anti-Israel protests risking lives all over the world (Paris, Nazareth, Germany, Houston, Ireland).  What is Israel to do…? After 66 years of trying to get along with her neighbors, it’s time to just isolate, protect and continue to build our Homeland that was obtained legally and with deep historical roots. I’m an optimist but, sadly, I don’t see Peace in our near future.   I do see hope when I read letters like this one, which is just SPOT ON! http://blogs.timesofisrael.com/a-letter-to-israel-an-indian-writes/ And of course stories of the Israeli Field Hospital set up to assist injured Gazans is ignored by most in the world…but not here: http://www.israel21c.org/headlines/israel-sets-up-field-hospital-for-wounded-gazans/ And lastly, here are 5 media myths about the situation that will enlighten your view, especially if you’ve been watching CNN, reading the NYTimes or listening to NPR: http://www.ajc.org/site/apps/nlnet/content2.aspx?c=7oJILSPwFfJSG&b=9077509&ct=14093965

You wouldn’t know this is an AXE commercial plus it speaks volumes and refers to John’s quote above:

Loyalty
BRAVO to Michael Bloomberg on his solidarity mission to Israel and his articulate retort to CNN’s Wolfe Blitzer. Our US delegation needs to take a lesson on Loyalty and Support from former Mayor Bloomberg and our neighbors to the north as Canada’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper also unequivocally defends Israel:
http://tinyurl.com/CanadianMPHarper

Hypocrisy
Was it hypocritical for the FAA to restrict flights into Israel this week when no restrictions were set for the Ukraine?  These restrictions and travel warnings are a bonus to Hamas as it accomplishes their economic terrorist goals.  Now is the time to travel to Israel (to eat, shop and spend) as Hannan and I will be doing very soon.

Abrupt Continuity
We, in the US, take Freedom of Religion for granted.  This week, in Iraq, ends the millennial long history of Christian in Mosul as Islamist threatened (with death), that all Christians either flee their homes with no possessions or convert.  Thousands fled while 5 families converted.  These persecuted victims are decedents of the earliest Christians from 2,000 years ago who’s history is now wiped clean from Mosul. Pure genocide.
http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/iraq-christians-flee-mosul-militant-threats-24659276

Water Disruption
There are many things we can’t live without but none more important than water.  Sadly, over 7,000 Detroiters, who couldn’t afford to pay their water bills, had their service turned off last month. Nearly half came up with the payments and had their water return but the others were still dry till this week when the Water Department gave those who still had unpaid bills a 15 day reprieve. Most hope those who are still without service can make arrangements for a payment plan so service is not interrupted in the future. Again our friends to the North are coming to our rescue as carloads of Canadians plan to deliver 200 gallons of water to the dry Detroiters:http://tinyurl.com/CanadianWater

313
And speaking of Detroit, Happy 313 Birthday (celebrated yesterday July 24th) which coincides with the Detroit’s 313 Area Code. To celebrate, maybe you’d like to purchase a cool and unique pair of Detroit Flip Flops made from recycled (illegally dumped tires) http://tinyurl.com/DetroitTreadsSandals

Interrupted Sleep
Another necessity for the well-being of our health is Sleep. Recent research indicates that sleep has a direct correlation to your health.  It’s the new “Apple a day”
Here are 37 tips on how to achieve a better nights rest:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/03/17/better-sleep-tips-best_n_4958036.html  Wishing you a Lila Tov (“good night”).

May next week’s Shabbat message be filled with more peaceful news.  Shabbat Shalom to you and your loved ones.

Lisa

Bonus Music Video
Please enjoy this beautiful rendition of David Broza’s famous song “Yihiyeh Tov / It will be good”.  This English version was first song by a father (heading to fight terrorism) to his son more than 10 years ago and now the father and son are singing it again as the son heads to Gaza to fight that same battle.

Condolences
The above song is a tribute to all of the people who have lost their lives these last several weeks. Condolences to the Israeli families of the nearly 30 deaths from this Operation Protective Edge as well as these two Americans/Israeli soldiers who were killed.

Condolences also to the family and friends of Malaysia Flight 17 as some of the victims are arriving back to Holland.  After a week of complete disrespect for the crash site with Russian Separatist sabotaging the wreckage and many bodies still missing, this tragedy will take months or even years to sort out.

Dear Friends and Family,

Tragedy
Nearly 300 people traveling from Amsterdam to Malaysia were killed when their aircraft was shot down over Ukraine on Thursday.  Condolences to the family and friends of the victims.

Disproportional War
Though Egypt tried to negotiate a ceasefire earlier in the week, their true feelings about the conflict are exemplified by this quote:  “Thank you Netanyahu and may God give us more [people] like you to destroy Hamas!” – Azza Sami of the Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram.  Least we forget, Hamas is a terrorist organization just like Al Qaeda yet during 9/11 and our fight against Bin Laden, I don’t ever remember the news media giving ample time and interviews to Osama so he could spew his lies and rhetoric. So why must we hear the Terrorist spokesman from Hamas give his message of deceit on radio, TV and in newspapers?  Sadly the people of Gaza are being manipulated and scarified for Hamas’ sole purpose of destroying Israel.  While Israel strives to protect her citizens with warning sirens, bomb shelters and missile defense systems, Hamas (the elected government) has spent it’s money stockpiling rockets to kill as many Israelis a possible. Gaza has NO sirens, No protective shelters but they have the world’s sympathy with their intended (disproportional) high casualty rate and their continual brainwashing messages of Hate to their children.  Here is a factual and clear 5 1/2 minute video that describes the historical situation of the Middle East.  Most of you know these facts…its the world who needs educating (thanks, Reuben, for  sharing):
http://www.israelvideonetwork.com/the-most-important-video-about-israel-ever-made

Hamas Victims

French Fury
This week, while Israel continued it’s protective shield defensive to eliminate the 10,000 stockpiled rockets in Gaza, France was celebrating Bastille Day but not all French were focusing on themselves.  Sadly, the escalation of Anti-Semitism reared its ugly head in Paris as thousands of pro-Hamas demonstrators at Bastille Square attacked a Synagogue with stones and bricks while Jews were inside praying.  Police needed to attend to the violent situation to assist the barricaded Jews.  This video shows the full picture: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6k3RH3AUkc and here is the article about the demonstration:
http://ejpress.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=49737&catid=2  The French Jewish immigration to Israel (escaping the rising hatred) has quadrupled in the last year indicating the severity of the situation.  500,000 Jews live in France (Europe’s largest Jewish Population), yet their security among hostile neighbors is forcing them out of their home. Israel expects 5,000 French Olim (immigrants) to make Israel their new home this year.

                               French Jews

Suit Stunt
Here in our country, specifically DC, the Speaker of the House, John Boehner, has decided to sue President Obama, (as far as I can tell) for performing his job.  The specifics of the suit address the delay of ObamaCare which they (the Republicans) tried to repeal 50 times.  Boehner sees this lawsuit as a more palatable course of action than the extremes of his sect, who want to impeach POTUS.  This political stunt is a complete waste of money and time.  A better use of our time (among many other issues) is how to humanely deal with the 10s of Thousands of refugee children fleeing from the life threatening effects for forced Central American Gang violence partly due to our insatiable drug appetite.  Those who are protesting their temporary housing options don’t seem to understand the full picture.

                    They look like friends…

Friendly Reminder
Since I’ll be away during our Michigan Primary (Aug. 5th), I have already sent in my Absentee Ballot.  There is a Statewide Proposal (14-1) to “Reduce State Use Tax which I researched (http://www.lwvmi.org/documents/VG2014P_Prop14-1.pdf ) and found much support for so I voted YES on this proposal.  Also, there is an Oakland County Millage Renewal which I also voted YES. Lastly, if you are voting the Democratic Party (you can only vote one section) I urge you to vote for Rudy Hobbs (US Congress, District 14).  Rudy is the smartest, most capable and experienced candidate with a pro-Michigan, pro-Woman and pro-Israel stance.

Shalom Bayit (Peace of the Home)
Sadly, we lack Shalom in our House of Worship.  As our Rabbi is moving on, we bid him gratitude for his excellent 16 years of leadership and wish him well, though during this transition we need to remember our Jewish morals and act accordingly. Some have been blinded by emotions and have lashed out disrespectfully to fellow congregants who volunteer their time (with no personal gain) to help guide the direction of our Shul.  It was shocking to hear some of the visceral attacks that were unfiltered from fellow Jews.  We will get through this segue with hopes of healed wounds and optimistic visions of our future.

Beauty
I am a minimalist when it comes to fashion and beauty so I completely identified with this beautiful message about Beauty from Colbie Caillat: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXoZLPSw8U8&feature=kp

Peaceful Shabbat Shalom
July 11, 2014
Dear Friends and Family,

Protective Edge
After a week of accelerated tension with over 500 Hamas rockets targeted at Israeli citizenry and the IDF using defensive tactics in Gaza to help keep Israel safe, most are praying and hoping for a settling down period.  Israel wants calm while Hamas (the terrorist organization not necessarily the people of Gaza) wants graphic photos and breaking news headlines for their propaganda fight, not to mention the destruction of Israel. These rocket attacks are NOT new.  Since 2001, nearly 13,000 attacks from Gaza have been endured by Israel (that’s an average of 3 attacks EVERY single day). Here are the full stats: http://www.idfblog.com/facts-figures/rocket-attacks-toward-israel/ (side note: Thank God for the Technion designed/US Funded Iron Dome Defense System which has saved numerous lives). The media tries to equalize each side but in reality, Hamas has been instigating terror for years while Israel takes the defensive approach to eliminate the ammunition. Hamas uses human shields while the IDF sends forewarning notices before hitting rocket lunchers and suspected terrorist homes. The sides are NOT equal and this cartoon is a perfect analogy to the situation (thanks, Tzachi for sharing):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cbdnu_R9G40 Also, Hamas and their supporters use fabricated images to perpetuate pity though thankfully this tactic was discovered by the BBC fact checker: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnO4gy8dQIc

Hamas can never be a Peace Partner and hopefully this situation has helped the PA to reconsider it’s bond with this terrorist organization.

Disgraceful
Naivety convinced me that the coldblooded terrorists who murdered the 16 year old Palestinian, Muhammad Abu Khdeir could NOT have been Jewish as this type of revenge activity isn’t within our ethos.  Sadly, I was wrong and the Jewish terrorists who committed this dastardly crime were apprehended this week. This act is despicable, deplorable and deserves severe punishment.

Israeli visitors at the mourners’ tent of the Abu Khdeir family
Shuafat, Jerusalem

Humanity
Personal attempts to heal the deep-seeded wound were exhibited all this week by Israelis. The father of one of the kidnapped Israeli teens called with condolences to the family of the slain Arab teen. Israeli families attended his memorial service, paid condolence visits to his home with a genuine sense of apology and expression that those who did the killing do NOT represent 99.9% of the population.  Bibi also called the family and expressed his deepest condolences.  Sadly there is asymmetry with these Humane acts of kindness, since Arabs who express support of Jews are often treated as traitors and their lives are threatened.

Parentless
Here in the US, we have different human crisis dominating our border.  Will the nearly $4 Billion requested by Pres. Obama cover the enormous task of dealing with the projected 90,000unaccompanied immigrant children and teens detained while trying to reach our cherished American cities.  These kids are trying to escape their Central American homes where poverty, gang violence and Drug Lords dominate their surroundings.

Rectification
Bravo to our Michigan Senators Levin and Stabenow for supporting the Senatorial attempt to overturn last week’s SCOTUS decision with their endorsement of the Protect Women’s Health from Corporate Interference Act.  A companion House bill is expected, too.  The Hobby Lobby SCOTUS decision emphasizes the importance of our electoral process as the trajectory of our nation lies within the confines of 9 lifetime appointed Judges who’s personal beliefs can change the course of our country. This is why it is important to vote but also why it is strategic for elderly Judges like Ruth Bader Ginsburg to think about retirement while Obama is still in office. Justice Thurgood Marshal always regretted his retirement timing and his fears held true since Pres. George H.W. Bush replaced him with Clarence Thomas who will most likely go down in history as our lest-respected Justice.  Also, no other country has Lifetime appointments.  We should think about term limits for the Supreme Court or a reconfirmation process after a certain amount of time (like 15 years).

Gotcha
This is a great story of how one German photographer sabotaged the Nazis during WWII. This perfectly Aryan baby turned out to be Jewish. At the time, the truth would have cost her life, but now she proudly explains the story in this article:
http://www.businessinsider.com/nazis-perfect-aryan-poster-child-was-jew-2014-7

Sports Kudos
