Shabbat Shalom April 25, 2014

Dear Friends and Family,

“Stay Thirsty My Friends”
Did you know, The Most Interesting Man in the World is a nice Jewish actor who lives a quiet life in Vermont with his wife and two dogs.  He based his accent on his good friend, Fernando Lamas. “You look Maarvelous”  Here is a brief interview of how he got his Dos Equis Beer spokesperson job:

Savor  Sundays
Check out Billy Crystal’s 700 Sundays currently on HBO.

Hannan and I were sitting in the 4th row (on the left) during the taping of this Broadway performances. Billy only had 700 Sundays before his father died when Billy was only 15-years-old. Treasure your Family “Sundays” whether they are Friday nights, Tuesday afternoons or Saturday mornings.

Poor Choice
Hey kids, treasure your families BUT if you decide to run away, a jetliner wheel-well is not the smartest mode of transportation.  A 16-year-old hopped a fence at the San Jose, CA airport and cuddled next to the airplane’s rubber-treads before passing out from a lack of oxygen and severe low temps. He landed in Hawaii but doctors say his body and brain will have long-term affects and I assumed he parents will “ground” him for life.

 Nation’s Strength
In March alone, more than 30 rockets blasted from Gaza toward Israel.  Did you hear about it in the News? It’s so ironic how Jews are often criticized for controlling the Media (among many other anti-semitic rants) however the Media rarely picks up the attacks against Israel OR the Global humanitarian efforts of Israelis and Jews.  Just this week, Gaza sent 7 more rockets into Southern Israel and again it was missed by the major media.  Our extreme defense system continues to protect us but where was our protection in the 1930s when Hitler’s plan was taking root.  This Monday is Yom HaShoah, our remembrance day for the victims of the Holocaust and the Heros. We remember the victims as well as the warriors who fought back, like those of the Warsaw Uprising. 6 Million Jewish souls (among millions of other victims: Pols, Slavs, POWs, Gays, disabled, mentally ill…), were brutally murdered during that evil period.  The first Yom HaShoah was observed in 1953 and written into law by Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion. On Yom HaShoah, Israeli shops are closed, Israeli TV and Radio reflect the day and memorial ceremonies take place throughout the country. It is also a time when Israeli High School students accompany Jews from around the world and Holocaust survivors on a March of the Living at Auschwitz to proudly display that Hitler’s plan failed miserably as we are a strong peoplehood and a strong Nation.
 Union of Hate
Sometimes its hard to tell who the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, despises more, the Israelis or Hamas.  This week his chosen partner is the Terrorist Organization that controls Gaza. Of course, the European Union blessed this marriage even though they see Hamas’ true colors.  Supposedly, the partnership agreement included the acceptance of a Two-State Solution, which means Hamas must accept the existence
of Israel. The PA and Hamas have bonded in the past only to end in divorce.  We’ll see how long this union last.

Union of Love
She is Sunni, He is Shiite and They are in love. They met as children when tending to animals as their families farms were next to each other. This love affair warrants a death sentence, yet these two Afghanis risked their lives to become a couple.  They secretly wed and are now hiding out in the remote mountains of their country planning and hoping for a safe place to call home. If found by their families or the Afghanistan authorities, their lives will be over.

                               Forbidden Love
Collect Confidence
My new motto is to be a Warrior not a Worrier.  We all have self-doubt and the occasional lack of self confidence, but we must forge forward in our lives as Warriors against our internal and external obstacles.

Youthful Activism
Madison Kimrey is a 12-year-old Warrior.  She is the brightest young political star I’ve ever seen.  Madison recently wrote a brilliant open letter to (the extremely anti-progressive) Phyllis Schlaflyabout women’s choices
and has spoken out at rallies about voting rights
I look forward to watching continue her activism.

Speak Up
Be Brave to stand up, speak up and help improve the world, like Madison Kimrey.  Sara Bereilles provides this exact message in this entertaining youtube:  The lyrics are powerful and the dance move are fun to watch.

Encourage Diversity
4% and decreasing (since our Michigan populous voted against Affirmative Action) is the percentage of African American students now at U of M.  Hispanic student percents also have dropped. Diversity brings new viewpoints, creativity, innovation and understanding. Our country’s diversity should be MORE accurately represented in our Universities, Boardrooms and Legislative Halls… not LESS.

Beautiful Words
Alex Zaslow and her beloved father, Jeff Zaslow (z’l) share the love of conveying a meaningful message through expressive words.  Here is Alex’s recent Huffpost about her family’s devotion to The Boss.  It also includes a bonus youtube of the sweet tunes of Jordan Zaslow.  They sure are a talented family.

Wishing you and your family a Sweet and Peaceful Shabbat Shalom,

My Next Life
By: (the late) George Carlin
I want to live my next life backwards:
You start out dead and get that out of the way.
Then you wake up in a nursing home feeling better every day.
Then you get kicked out for being too healthy.
Then enjoy your retirement and collect all of your pension.
Then when you start work, you get a gold watch on your first day.
You work 30-40 years until you’re too young to work.
You get ready for High School: drink alcohol, party, and you’re generally promiscuous.
Then you go to primary school, you become a kid, you play, and you have no responsibilities.
Then you become a baby, and then…
You spend your last 9 months floating peacefully in Spa-like conditions – Central heating, room service on tap, and then…
You finish off as an orgasm.
I rest my case.

Mazel Tov to this year’s Eight Over Eighty Awardees for their continued efforts in our community.  They will be honored on Sunday May 4th @ 11:30am.  For more info:

Condolences to the families of the 13 Sherpas who died on Mt. Everest last week and to the families of the 3 Sherpas who are still missing.  Risking their lives for the thrill of the foreigners’ climb is now debated among their community, yet the lucrative pay is quite appealing to them.
This week armed robbers stole thousands of dollars of merchandise from Tapper’s Jewelry Store in West Bloomfield. The Tapper Family are Jewels in our community with their decades of philanthropy. Please convey your appreciation of this wonderful family by stopping by to show your support.

Please help elect (future Senator) Gary Peters.
His opponent, Terri Lynn Land has happily accepted the endorsement of the Family Research Council (a national entity who’s main goal is to attack the Gay Community). Here’s is Wikipedia’s definition:
Also, she boasts about working at her family’s Trailer Park as a child but once she owned it as an adult, she evicted all of the tenants and attempted to rezone it for commercial use but the City’s planning commission and the Land family couldn’t come to an agreement so the land continues to sit empty after families were forced to leave.
Please help support Rudy Hobbs to follow in Gary’s shoes.
